OFFICIAL Jarome Luai - #295

I just saw the replay of him taking out Campbell after a kick in the first half... What is he trying to do? Is he trying to find out the grey area in the rules or something and push the boundaries? Because it was so damn obvious he ran him off the ball... I'm dumbfounded..
Does it every time. Does he not have the confidence in his backs to get into position for the catch?

Becasue the half is the one who brings all of those players together, hence why clubs generally pay them alot more than those playing outside them.
That's exactly my point.

We've made him close to the highest paid player in the game and now suddenly people are saying we shouldn't expect much from him because he doesn't have great players around him.

You can't have your cake and eat it. Regardless of who's been around him, he's been poor.

We shouldn't need to surround a suposed marquee half with origin/international playes so he can perform at an average level in first grade.

For a guy who's running game is supposedly a strength, it took him til round 20 to get his first linebreak. In no uncertain terms, that is pathetic. It's genuinely hard to not break the line playing that many games. All it takes is a bloke slipping in front of you sometimes.

Look I can't defend his numbers this season and we were all hoping for more, but I think there are some contributing factors that we can't ignore...

Luai has been playing #7 for most of the season, which is generally one closer to the ruck... galvin was the one making line breaks, because he was in 6 and in a better position to... now that Luai is back at 6, I suspect you will see his footy improve because it suits his natural style..

It also appears there's been issues with who's the leader of the team... When Luai arrived it was basically Galvins team... And Luai sat back and let that happen, rightly or wrongly, he said team first....

Its Luais team now and we've had injuries, suspension and the origin period....

You couldn't have thrown prime Joey or Thurston on and turned is in to a top 4 side within a season... It takes a bit of time... And without luai we probably struggle to attract other talent that will soon surround him... Turuva and the may brothers probably wouldn't be here if Luai wasn't.. so that's worth the 1.2 in year one of the rebuild... The 1.2 in year two will be all based on what he does on the field.

Weve had to pay overs for a long time

Yeah you’re absolutely right, and yes as others have said, along with coach and the leadership, he has created a positive culture. Also, brought some good players along.

Let’s hope on the field he can be that elite player the price tag expects……and I’d imagine who Jerome expects.

So lots to look forward too.

Yeah no doubt he is a good player who has improved the team and the culture of the club, however do you think he has looked like an elite player?

I don't think so, if he's worth every cent he should be in the very highest category of player.

Gutho for Saints has been better value then Luai, for example and he aint on 1.2m. There'd probably be a number of better value buys then Luai.

However, its only early in his time here
He and the rest of the team need to get better. Value to the tigers is more than what he does on the park. But he does need to do better, especially this part of the year and next year.

A game that should've never been close if he was playing like a 1.2m man lol
Man...stop looking at his.price tag.

There's probably only one $1m+ player in the comp that puts in consistent performances week in week.out and thats teddy.

But youve never ever credited him with anything positive and we all know your angle.
As i said earlier we as a club are in no position really to wheel n deal...if we want top line players we must pay overs

fr we literally played against Dave Fifita who’s on a million and he was on for 19 minutes and did SFA 🤣 a $1m with expansion clubs coming in and an increase in the cap to be expected it’s not the outrageous number it used to be.

Luai needs to come out in the next 2 weeks and squash the first get out he has been ok, this would show he is committed and also help with new signings , API on board , Luai on board , KPP on board we move forward

I also just don't think some people can properly appreciate "off ball" impact with equal measure for on-ball impact.

The Luai signing isn't just to tally up try and line break assists, it's the chat, the covering tackles, the marshalling of troops, the confidence, the culture, winning mentality, game plan execution, media relations, reliability, mental fortitude, experience, rep selection, reputation outside the club, magnet for other signings, confidence of the coach, community service etc. etc.

It's the same reason you can't just trot out 17 talented novices every week, because of how much mental state and experience is part of the game.

Souths famously turned around their fortunes when they signed Roy Asotasi and it lead directly to some other talent joining the club. Of course it wasn't just about Big Roy but something changed at that time, people got serious about Souths and they gradually built a reputation, attracted better players, then their juniors started performing better in their improving system etc. etc. You need a circuit breaker to try and remove many of the club's old habits and hard-earned negative stereotypes, and you can really only do that with a proven winner who shows a willingness to lay their reputation on the line to improve the club.
