OFFICIAL Jarome Luai - #295

Josh Morris on 2gb was of the opinion Luai was jinking around and disjointed the attack tonight.
I didn’t see much jinking. He has to have a dig and run at the line. Had one attacking grubber that looked more likely to land in the club rather than the in goal. If he has a go and it doesn’t work out I can live with that but he’s not creative enough right now to not run at the line.

He was virtually invisible last night and made two big blunders; the grubber over the in goal line when we had the Broncos on the rack and the decision to run wide when we should have been setting up for the field goal. However, like others, I'm willing to say there was a bit of rust there and he'll most likely improve next week. What worries me more is the overall lack of creativity and organisation of our halves pairing.

Needs to be better - much better …

Compare his influence on the game to Reynolds …which one is getting $1.3m and which $600k ?

I’ll cut him a little bit of slack because he hasn’t played for a month …but time to step up on the field big boy ..

Yeah he didnt do any of that jining tonight, no idea what Morris is on about. I agree he needs to play through the line. When Jarome thinks "play through them" he is so much better

Disappointing loss. Jarome's stats are pretty poor, I wonder if his MCL is still an issue.

I believe Jock would have done a better job as he knows the Broncos system. He also has a much better kicking game and a more straightforward through the middle structure.

Coaching mistake by Benji in my opinion.
Luai looked to be limping in certain parts of the game, I don’t think he was 100% at all. Weird to rush him back when Jock and Doueihi were humming nicely

i was at the game so will need to watch the reply to confirm. Luai seemed to always have an inside defender in his face. It wasn’t his defender it was two players already covering.

It felt like he needed to be outside Jock. The way Jock digs into the opposition line is well established, but the impact on a running creative 5/8 isn’t.

My opinion remains… we need a halfback on the field

I think the lads know Madden will be coming into the mix. The same reason he came on last night.

7-Madden
6-Luai
5-Turuva
4-Douhei
3-Herbert
2-May
1-Bula

Ugly truth is Makasini cost us the game. 4 momentum changing errors.

- The dropped pass from Bula
- The dropped kick with no one around him
- Not dropping back for Reynolds to kick to Mariner
- Not making the decision to throw the ball back inside and getting tackled out by Staggs (gun player by the way).

Luai is being used as the scapegoat but surely everyone agrees on the above cold hard facts.

Tito.

I can see what you’re saying but think they are separate issues.
Yes, Maka had a game he would rather forget but hopefully learns from but Luai wasn’t great for two reasons.Firstly, he looked a bit underdone. Timing and confidence were missing. He wasn’t digging into the line and was noticeable compared to when Madden came on to the field.
Secondly, I think we probably went to his side too often which was where Staggs was and their defensive strength. I am not sure whether he was calling for the ball but we should have shifted to their right more often.

Haven't seen the game yet, but in general you are right. Its seems to be a concept some are struggling with i.e if the defenders on the inside aren't engaged they simply slide leaving no room for any of the outside backs. It's why Penrith have always used Yeo to engage the inside before it goes to Cleary and it's why AD has been so good previously because Madden has done likewise for him.

Some on here seem to think Luai was going to come in and do Maddens role, that was never going to be the case, it's AD's responsibility to pick up that slack because he effectively played 6 while Luai was out and Madden played 7 ( despite the numbers on their backs).

I find it amusing today that former players who were saying you keep AD at 7 and Madden makes way are now saying Luai stunted the attack. Adam is a footy player, a very good one, but he is not a 7 that digs into the line and straightens the attack. The strongest way it could and should have been done was Madden7, Luai 6 and AD replacing Herbert and if Luai wasn't fit then Benji should have had the balls to say no, not this week.
