Jock Madden #244

Is this confirmation there won't be a bud Sullivan in tigers colours next year??? Or maybe, bud Sullivan is staying and douehi has chosen to sign elsewhere??? Pretty handy to have jock and bud as starting halves in reserve grade, and to be called upon into first grade when required...
I think its Bud Nadz, as Benji just spoke today about keeping AD and they would have held off Madden if they were waiting on AD decision.

We can only hope anyway

The people saying they like him … what good memories do you have of his first stint here ?

I remember him losing us the game dropping the ball in the in goal final minute against the Titans in 2022 ..

Very Tigers way to lose that one … desperation last play kick hits the up right and Mads fumbled it

My brain was working differently and thought it may be a signing to help cover the possible departure of Luai( perhaps he’s already made his intentions clear to Bm)?
Or am I being too cynical ?

Yes Hal I think you are mate logic would suggest Bud is on the way-out said a few times in the media that Souths feels like home.

In the past we might have been dumb enough to carry both but surely not now.

He was good in reserve grade. The Magpies actually looked cohesive when he was here.

Didn't see any rumours about this signing, although I don't read the signings/rumours thread all the time. Good work by the club keeping it under wraps.

It’s a back up half. I don’t think it’s an insurance policy for Luai. He’s the perfect backup halfback - first grade experience, doesn’t overplay his hand, happy to spend most of the year in KOE but can step in and do a job when needed. Most clubs (the good ones anyway) have someone like him in their top 30.

We have to remember that Madden came through as an outstanding prospect

Player of the Chamionship at Australian Schools
Australian Schoolboys half and Captain
SG Ball top point scorer and player of the comp
Man of the Match in U20s SOO in 2019 and Tigers Flegg Cup Player of the year

In 2021 he took Magpies nsw cup team to 2nd (played 13 games won 8 - they only won 1 without him).

Then came into a woeful Tigers team as a fill in fir the worst team in the comp- no young halfback could look good in that shocking team in 2022

Played 16 games across 2 qld cup teams and the Broncos with some injuries but was part of a squad that made the grand final even if back up for most of the year

In 2024 he played 10 nrl games and under Kevvie was the backup half performing ok but also spent a lot of the year injured only play 12 games across all comps.

I am not saying he will be starting half but he always had potential, is a great back and has a really strong kicking game - wouldn't shock me to see Latu at lock and Madden at halfback at some stage next year In a side going well

Thanks for the summary, I liked everything except that last sentence. I think if he's replacing Latu in the halves then we are in big trouble. Latu is the best half prospect we've had since Benji, if he can't stay in that position for us then something has gone wrong.

I agree madden is a solid signing. With decent foundations and smarts you can see how he'd be so effective in juniors, a really polished player at a young age. I think he lacks the pace and physical attributes to ever be anything more than a slightly below average half in the NRL, but like you I think he's a decent purchase.

I actually think rugby union would be a really good option for him if he wanted to be more than below average, as the skillset of a number 10 in that game suits his attributes. But for us, I'm happy to have him as a back up. While Sullivan is energetic and has individual moments of brilliance, I'm much more comfortable with Madden as the back up.
