Jock Madden #244

I disagree, twal is our lock , AD is miles in front of madden , his defence is a big problem
Doeuihi cannot kick, he can't pass. All he can do is run into gaps that others put him into. Madden's defence is fine. Our system's need to make sure we don't have little guys isolated 1-1 with much bigger guys right on the line.

Without Madden we would have lost. Doeuihi needs to find a new position.

Twal is playing well but could easily play prop too.

Agree he has deficiencies with his passing and kicking. And with Twal. He could do what he’s doing as a prop. And with madden being a reason for why we won.

I gotta disagree with you with douehi running into gaps others people put him into. He on at least 3 occasions created opportunities with the way he straightened, held up a pass and ran through the defense.

U don’t know a lot about football , AD can pass he set up to great try’s , his runs were great madden is not any where AD , when AD lets lost with the bomb he is way better than madden , who’s defence is terrible

Thank god u anti picking the team , madden is a nsw cup player at best

Interested to see what Benji does with Jock going forward. That was one of the best kicking performances I've ever seen from a WT half. Doueihi and Luai are better players than him and are more important to the team, but neither of them have the skill set he does.

Depending on how the next few weeks go, Jock has the opportunity to force Benji's hand so that he can't be left out.

Jock did a great job, but I want to temper my excitement until we have played our next 5 games.

This is the 3rd year we have been 2W 1L in our first 3 matches and then we lose a few close ones and fall away.

It's also early in the season where teams are not in their best form.

If we can jag 3 or 4 wins from the next 5...without Luai and Taylan, then I'll believe we are the real deal.

We haven’t looked this cohesive …in defence in those years . The issue won’t be Newcastle and the eels , even though those games are 50/50. It goes broncos , raiders , sharks , storm . If we are fair dinkum we should be looking at at least 3 wins , hopefully 4. Even with the outs in the backline .

He can pass no doubt. A couple of years ago however he threw beautiful spiral passes to the wingers who were already marked. All good having a nice pass but there is no point if the winger is marked 1 metre from sideline.

'He's with us now still': Madden's emotional return

Jock Madden felt his late grandfather on the field with him as he played the best game of his NRL career, guiding Wests Tigers to one of their most impressive wins under Benji Marshall.
The five-eighth knows the challenge now is backing up that emotional effort every week for the rest of his stint as Jarome Luai's injury replacement.

Madden missed grandfather Brian's funeral to play the come-from-behind round-four win over the Warriors, his first game at NRL level since July 2024.

Tigers coach Benji Marshall had tried to talk the 26-year-old into pulling the pin on his NRL recall in Auckland to attend the funeral service back in Australia.

Madden, though, knew grandfather Brian would've wanted him to play.
"I spoke to him before he passed away and he told me not to come back and (to) play football," Madden said.

"Obviously it was a tough decision, I spoke to my family and a lot of my aunties and my uncle as well and they said to play, that's what he would want. I went by that.” Madden's rugby league journey has taken him from junior footy in Scone to Australian Schoolboys selection, and then an NRL debut at the Tigers as a 21-year-old.

A stint up in Brisbane followed and ended with the club's 2025 premiership season, before a return to the Tigers. Brian had watched every chapter unfold.

"He always would ring me and if he could watch games, he'd watch them, and he'd give me some sort of feedback," Madden said.

"I was real close with him."

So too could Madden feel Brian's presence two Fridays ago as he scored a try and played a hand in four others during a spectacular defeat of the previously-unbeaten Warriors.

"I felt like he was out there, for sure," Madden said.

"He's with us now still.

"Leading into (the game), it was probably the mixed emotions of playing and wanting to do him proud but obviously not being there with the family. The juggle of that. But once we got onto the field, I knew I had a job to do."

That job continues against Parramatta in the traditional Easter Monday clash, with Madden poised to take on the bulk of kicking duties again to free Adam Doueihi up.

Halves partner Doueihi was excellent in round four, in no small part due to the platform Madden laid.

"I had a game plan that I had to do for the boys, so I've got to continue to do that this weekend as well. I've put that game behind me and focus on this weekend," Madden said.

Me too. He's the type of measured, organising half we need.
I was not happy we let him go, lack of patience and probably still some hangover from waiting for brooks, but not everyone hits NRL killing it, I was happy to have him back, he’s got some experience now and 26 is about the right age for a half. I too like his organising (comes with experience) and his kicking game has come on by the looks of it.
Him kicking takes the pressure off Doobs, and his passing gave Doobs the time and space to cut loose.
Still only one game in, he needs to do it again consistently, and when he can do it when our forwards are under pressure, then I will know he is the answer.
I’m looking forward to it, go Jock!!

Well said. The jury's still out but promising signs.
