BJ Lielua has blown up big time in regards to not getting paid if things don't go well with the NRL season..
He is very critical of the money the NRL should have and this scenario shouldn't happen if they kept money aside for emergencies such as this...
ninemsn...

Yes, because the NRL should anticipate a world wide pandemic. Funny how players are happy to trot out how the game is a business when they are negotiating contracts, yet when it comes to the downside of business, suddenly it’s not fair.

I can see where he’s coming from. His entire life is footy and the NRL have literally no money stashed away for an emergency, pretty ridiculous. The NRL should have money put away for a crisis.

No different to anyone else...

Comments from him and Fonua-Blake are short sighted. Go on lads, push for your full pay while the game is offline for 3 months, and when it goes broke, good luck chasing up the balance of your contract. Maybe do what everyone else is doing, ease up on your spending and save a bit of your own money away because that's what everyone else of a fraction of the wages top 30 NRL players get have to do.

The players and NRL administration are in total sync for a change, their views are short sighted and reactionary.

Funny how the game should have money stashed away for a crisis, where is the onus on players to do the same?

Shouldn't the players at BJ's level have some money stashed away for a rainy day (or a biblical flood in this case )

I'm guessing they will get backpaid if anything was to happen

Talking of this at least when they spoke of clubs going under financially we didn't get a mention in the Bottom 3 clubs (Manly definitely ,Sharks and Warriors )

Wests Tigers have fought their way to be self-sustainable ...that doesn't even take what Wests Ashfield are able to tip in if necessary..

The concern is the amount of Corporate dollars currently provided starts to dry up..if there is no footy or the CV crisis starts to hit them...

We are in a better position than a lot of Clubs..

As for the players just concentrate on playing..

I can see BJs point, why does the AFL have a big cash reserve and the NRL have very little in reserve? The taxpayers are supporting both organisations to accumulate wealth.

Even if you could plan for one-off global disasters like COVID-19 does anyone really think the mental giants running the NRL would be capable of coming up with anything decent. These clowns could not run a kids birthday party.

I remember the NRL bragging about how many tens of millions they made last year - now they are begging the government for a handout themselves. I’m sure Joey has money around to pay his bills but you try not getting paid for possibly 6 months or more and see how you go. Every other major sporting organisation in the world has the money to survive this virus except the NRL, it’s bad business from them.

Everyone is in this position, it is not limited to Rugby League players, this is what they seem to forget.

Is it written into his contract that he will get paid if the season is called over? if not, too bad, so sad. If my work place closes up, im screwed and wont get paid. Enjoy the hundreds of thousands to play a game for 80 mins a week for 6 months a year and sit in a gym and coffee houses for a decade Joey, youll be in the the real world soon enough kid.

I don’t think he’s forgot that at all - I think he expects a major sporting company like the NRL to be smart enough to be able to survive a measly three months without revenue like every other sport in the world can. I’m sure Joey could survive but like he said it’s pretty bad the NRL have no money stashed away at all

I think everyone’s taking this the wrong way to be honest. Joey isn’t sitting there demanding to be paid, he’s questioning why the NRL are so poor with their money they couldn’t even survive three months with no revenue.

Simply put ...if you compare Rugby League to other sports outside of Australia it comes down to numbers / population

How many Rugby League supporters do we actually have in Australia / NZ maybe 10-11 million

Compare that to say NBA , MLB ,EPL etc

One player can have a contract worth more than entire salary cap of maybe 8/9 NRL clubs

Is everyone forgetting the Collective Bargaining Agreement that Cam Smith and the RLPA fought so hard for. All players signed up for this. Its a 'share of revenue' model. Therefore, loss of revenue means loss of players share.
Remember the players stating they are the product, well if there is no product there is no revenue.

30 million it was ......the game has made many mistakes ..hopefully like the WT's they have learnt many lessons are on the up and up

Don't worry the AFL has the same issues ...having assets isn't going to help players get paid ....who is going buy Docklands in the current climate at market price

Maybe players themselves should take out income protection insurance.

Too right, there's a difference right now between assets and cash.

AFL has more money basically because they have had higher ticket sales for long periods and were on top of the "membership" revenue stream WAY before NRL.

The AFL is also effective at lobbying and receiving preferred funding from the state and federal government - for example AFL received ~50% of the pledged national sporting funding from both parties ahead of the 2019 federal election. This is both because of greater ingrained loyalty to AFL from southern-state representatives, and also the high impact of sporting promises in southern-state marginal seats.

Basically AFL has more supporters willing to lay money down over longer periods of time. This is easily evident in the AFL subscription in Melbourne vs NRL subscription in Sydney. Rugby League is, to a more dramatic extent, a very poor cousin of Rugby in NZ for the same reasons.

Lastly, nobody should ever forget that League in Australia has had to endure two great schisms that never impacted AFL - the initial break from rugby and Super League. Don't anyone ever take for granted how massive those were in challenging the position of rugby league in Australia, particularly Super League which was almost entirely an externally-driven fight for media rights.

considering they are playing a game, and being paid very very well to do so, I'm sure going to the football will be first on everybody's priorities when it comes to where the Joe Everyman will spend his money when people are laid off and hours get cut back......

The mentality of these guys is awesome. I agree the NRL should have a better stockpile of cash for a rainy day, but man alive talk about biting the hand that feeds you

NRL would be much better off if they didn't have to pay the players so much money!!
