Joey not a happy chappy.....

I would love to sit down with BJ and have a heart to heart in regards to suffering an income loss...
firstly BJ,my partner and I went through 16 months of breast cancer treatment..
secondly I lost my business through the devastation of the fires..
thirdly Im about to lose my job because they are going to close the business I work in...

wake up BJ and smell the roses your not in to bad a situation and if you do have a pay cut take it like a man and try to be a little compassionate to the people who pay their membership to support the club you play for as well as injecting revenue when buying merchandise and now most of us will be struggling to do that...but you have a sook at losing a bit of money, not your livley hood or your house..

Is funny, from memory the last collective bargaining agreement the players were looking at the TV contracts and the NRL income and arguing around the percentage of that they were entitled to.

When the excrement hits the fan (unexpectedly) and the NRL no longer have gate revenue or TV income, the players don't want a percentage anymore, they want their fixed rate contract that they agreed to.

The greed of these uneducated morons will kill the game.

Yep and reading some of your comebacks aimed at me you lost your sense of humour as well

I get the feeling now NRL know the season won't finish for sure, and they are just keeping rounds on and giving positive press as long as possible to keep revenue coming as long as possible.

Reckon those thoughts have been there long before a ball was kicked off and praise them for their zest in pushing ahead. Have watched a lot more footy to start this season than for a long time, as we may not get to see much more.

I don’t know why you’re attacking BJ? If you listened you would have heard him say.. “my wife is not gonna be happy”.
He’s the ham in the sandwich mate. Ease up on the poor guy!

Absolutely right regarding the NRL, it highlights squandering of a lucrative TV deal they spunked their trunks over years ago. However in saying that, the other sports noted like the EPL, NBA et al are not just regional sporting codes: they are a worldwide brand which are renowned the world over which enables them to draw on infinitely larger funds than the likes of the NRL, so it’s not directly comparative.
Countless other businesses will fall over if they were in a position where they had to suspend operations for 3 months as well, so it’s not just limited to the NRL.

I think this is the crux of the argument.

I'm not putting the boot into the NRL for staring down the barrel of insolvency if it can't sell its product for months on end. That is true of many big brands right now - QANTAS, Myer, Flight Centre, Hoyts etc. Every company is facing the question of how long they can afford to hold onto their workforce if no funds are coming in. What are Foxtel going to do if NRL and AFL cancel?

If NRL do what QANTAS have just done, and temporarily lay off staff, they'd have no trouble at all continuing regular head-office operations for a significant period. I have no idea on the outgoings that they'd still be obliged to fund wrt stadiums, insurance etc. But if the clubs aren't having to pay players, that is a very significant cost wiped away.

But it's the same question facing most businesses right now - if you lay people off and everything goes back to normal, can you put your capacity back up at the same rate? What about your moral obligations to your employees during a crisis?

So I think it's misplaced to attack the NRL for not being in a better financial position to endure the coronavirus. Nobody was totally prepared for coronavirus, not even the countries that suffered with SARS and MERS in the last 20 years. Especially not companies that rely on huge regular monthly revenues.

I don't think many large businesses would have business continuity protocols to manage months without sales in the face of a pandemic. That will almost certainly change when coronavirus gets under control. I can tell you from personal experience, I've been involved with my company's business continuity protocols and they are mostly around the idea of natural disasters or physical damage to premises - if offices are closed, or documents are damaged, or servers go down, or staff are at physical risk. We never dealt with the concept of viral pandemic or financial solvency, that's not something we really did (or even could) plan for. I mean, how does one really plan for the zombie apocalypse?

And specifically for the "faces" of the NRL - V'landys and Greenberg, they've been in the job for about 4 years and 6 months respectively. The ARLC itself is 8 years old. You can't heap 112 years of history on the incumbents. The $30M surplus of 2019 is pretty good, they weren't to expect a global pandemic; they aren't to be expected to stockpile for a global pandemic. Imagine if rugby league really and truly had $400-500M stashed away for a "rainy day". Like @Bula said, could you imagine the cash-grabbing frenzy of the clubs, players and RLPA if they knew the NRL was sitting on half a billion?

AFL has assets, their money is stored away - but that's not going to do you any good in a crisis either. Only cash assets are reliable at this time - property, stocks, bonds - all totally unreliable and potentially worthless during a severe crisis. Even cash becomes pointless if you reach the point of anarchy. For all the envy some league supporters might have for the AFL coffers, I don't think the AFL is capable of going months without playing games either.

The NRL is run by muppets, plain and simple.

And as i said a few weeks ago the salary will need to go down in the future. The NRL needs to be putting a certain %, say 10% into a savings fund. They simply can't be spending all the media money every year and not banking enough.

There are too many players on a million, or close to it, and that's not sustainable. Foxtel may no longer exist in a couple of years time. Streaming is rising, tv is dying. There will be no bidding wars. If ESPN get NRL for international audiences asap then that's some extra revenue for now but they won't be paying much for it.

If Joey thinks the NRL should be managing it's money better and diversifying their revenue streams (which they certainly could) he needs to consider that the players will be worse off as a consequence.

Im not attacking BJ in an abusive way...he really should have not commented about pay cuts and left it to Pascoe or Greenburg...If he is to be given a pay cut,he would still be getting something.keep his lively hood and house..I was more reflecting on how myself and thousands of others may not be able to survive during this time and after...
I did notice that you jumped to BJs defense and didn't care to comment on what I have had to deal with and still try to help who I can at this point in time..

Ive placed a travel ban on myself,CT will have to wait until next year for a catch up..
I would love to call in and visit you Hap,but your to busy to worry about a Mexican visiting you..
today there was NO toilet paper anywhere to be found, same as most days, however as luck has it a truck arrives at the supermarket later today and the lovely manageress is putting some tp and handtowels aside for me...good to know nice people...
I have my sense of humour Hap,its just been a very tough road for me since the breast cancer, losing the bar and grill through the fires and now losing another job because they may close up the pub..
Iam usually a very jovial person but life has dealt me some really bad cards, now my partner wants a split, since the chemo and drug changes her own personality has changed and I seem to be the one who is at fault...to tell the truth Im completely over things....

I'm sure NRL players could survive for 12 months with zero income, unless they've been blowing their money in the pokies for their entire career they should have a few pennies in the bank for a rainy day

What's the difference between free-to-air TV, pay TV and streaming TV? It's just a content platform.

There's no reason to suggest there won't be bidding wars, just the operators involved may be different.

NRL aren't completely dumb, they've been putting money away for their own digital services, that one day could become NRL being the sole retailer of content and not having to depend upon TV bidding and being locked to rights deals.

Oops, I was distracted and only read your last paragraph. Nobody should have to go through what you and your dear wife have mate. I meant no harm, I’m not as harsh as I sound on the screen either. Sometimes life throws up some challenges which test us and you’ve certainly had your share. I humbly apologise if I’ve made the situation worse, it was not my intention, I would prefer to be able to help. Thank you for referring me back to your post.
