John Bateman #268

Why is it most other clubs can shed their unwanted players but our don’t want to budge….
Why did we make so many silly signings in the first place.

Now, some of our signings have been incredible.
But things like Sullivan for 4 years have really hurt us. (I actually thought the Sezer signing was worse, I was wrong).
Nofo for 5 years at 500k

Ofcourse if you are a 300k player and get a nice juicy 500k contract, are you going to leave it?
HELL NO!
We can only blame ourselves for offering overs, especially to non starters.

How did it effect us? Sure we sucked this year but how much of that can actually be attributed to when Bateman started his preseason?
I agree later than mid January is a problem because then he actually would be late back and that is when training timing and positioning actually begins.
All the talk of telling him to be back in November or else is just childish BS.

Man.. our culture sucks.
You see Melbourne Storm would never accept a player on special conditions like this because it would totally ruin their training routine and buildup.
Easts on the other hand can accomodate stars like SBW with gaps in the training... But it's an accomodation in a very fixed training routine.

We, we have a mess!

Yea, I would like to say Bateman arriving late disrupted our build-up. I don't see evidence of our buildup, stucture or anything. ... !
Even Bateman said:
Senior players get treated like Juniors.
Junior players get treated like Seniors.

We have a lot of work to do, Bateman's late arrivial would disrupt a good teams preparation. You are correct, it may have had no effect at our shemozle.

So it’s true he is coming back…..?
It’s in the media so it must be true. A masthead of such character would never print anything less than the truth.
I reckon he’s try to shake the tree for as much $ as he can extort out of us to stay home and play in a league that hasn’t passed him by.
He hasn’t completely lost it, but he’s struggling to keep up most games, and in a better team they could control his downward spiral, but in our team, there’s no where to hide.

Its not special conditions. It's standard across all clubs as part of the enterprise agreement negotiated by the RLPA. As such, Melbourne, and all other clubs accept it. Listen to any interview with Storm officials in the preseason and there would undoubtedly be a reference to the representative players returning in January.

If you went back and watched every game he played this year from the start you would be suprised he is actually a decent player towards the end frustration got the better of him but there is still a good players there

I reckon he is just the wrong guy in a last team.

He doesn't have the attitude for a 17th club. You really need a toiler... Saififi kept trying at Newcastle when they were at the bottom of the table and I respect that.

Bateman would push if we were trying to get in the 8. But he won't be pushing our team from 17->15th. ... Yet sadly we need him.

I realise we made a big mistake in going Bateman instead of Luciano Leulia.

No we did not. We didn’t want LL on $700, so there’s no way we were going with his $900 to come back to Sydney price tag. He only plays half a game, another one who get kudos based on his A game, but he has no D game.

Bateman was a mistake yes, but linking it to it being like we had to take one or the other is not correct. We could have said no to both and signed someone to a more suitable contract.
Batemans contract should have been, 3 years or 2 with a CO. And they should have gotten a discount bcoz he never shows up for preseason. And they should’ve foreseen that.

Luciano is very average. He's a terrible defender, low on fitness and only really offers attacking threat when on the front foot. Madge got decent use out of him, cowboys were rid of him after a year or so and dragons signed him to a stupid contract. I am so glad Luciano is not at our club and Bateman is a much better player than him.

If he is coming back, it will give us four that definitely don't like losing in any way. i.e. Luai, Bird, Seyfarth and Bateman. Hopefully they can influence others.
Seyfarth and Bateman are both shit. Waiting to see if Bird can deliver

He's very fat. Must have travelled to america in the bye round

I agree with you Bagman. He should want to get here as soon as he can. In saying that, if he is selected to play for England in the test match series against Samoa, he will still be playing as late as early November. It would only be fair (and probably part of his contract) for him to arrive back at training at the same time as Luai and Turuva, who I expect will also be playing in the same games. On reflection, a more likely timeline for these players to return to training would more likely be early January. As you alluded to, we want them motivated to be here.
Richo came out pretty strongly in saying that he won’t be allowing any injured players to play internationals. With his injury history I hope Richo puts his foot down.

Take it for what its worth but a little birdy has told me he wants to stay with Burgess but also wants his money. I think you will find we have to pay an amount for him to stay and play. He doesn't want back because he is keen.
