John Bateman #268

Bateman comes across as extremely emotional to almost a fickle level . It’s just reactionary , and he’s just constantly in fight or flight .
I think as others have stated because of this , he might actually be bargained with . You just have to find the right approach .
I think even he has to realise his legacy , if he does leave here on bad terms will be ruined in Aus . The stench from his raiders exit was smelt the whole way across oz , and , whatever is going on here ( hey maybe Benji screwed up , and Bateman is in the right , none of us were in that room ) , absolutely will over write everyone’s memory of him . Which is kind of sad , because the first half of his career was being talked about in the same breathe as Gareth Ellis and Morley , and Hanley and the Burgess brothers as the rare English success stories / legends .

Never wanted him here in the first place but the pile on is unjustified in regard to his performance IMO. Was not the most undisciplined player in the squad but carries the label and his workrate was always decent.
Not sure what goes on with him off the field but pretty sure the club knew enough about him to suggest that losing was never going to sit well with him, and he has rarely seen out a contract and yet they offered a deal to good to refuse.
I don't see any point in paying him to play somewhere else given he may not be the solution, but he also was not the problem even though he has become the next biggest target now the other one has gone

IMO he was far and away our most undisciplined. Yes I know the amount of penalties he gave away suggest otherwise, but for me it was the type of penalty and the timing of the penalty that really stood out and hurt us so much. It often looked deliberate and it was on the 4th tackle just when we looked like defending the set. Real brain explosion tyoe stuff. They were truly horrible penalties. Combine that with a dropped ball at a crucial time and it just felt like he stuffed up at the worst times. The times when you need someone senior like him to lead, he did the opposite. He stung us too often.
He tried. His workrate in defence was admirable.

That is the pressure which comes from being one of the highest paid money earners at the club.So far he has been not only a poor buy but one who ran out of the club after "reported" issues with the coach leaving us with an even weaker squad for the 2024 season. We need a lot better from our experienced players than this and hopefully if he does come back he will have a much better attitude.

I dont think any of the comments relating to Bateman have anything to do with his discipline.

He was not setting the world alight before we signed him and people thought he would magically arrive here and recapture his Raiders form.

He had a 750/800k contract for 4 years and hasn't delivered performances commensurate with his salary. At 400k a season, I don't think anyone gives a shit and we aren't having this conversation.

Defensively, you can't really argue that he has been solid, but a back rower needs an element of attacking threat which is where he let's us down. He's played 32 games for 2 tries and 3 line breaks. Sam Fainu outperformed him by far on less than half the money.

You can talk about being picked for Tier 1 nations etc. But Biden was also President of the USA...The title means nothing. Bateman is living on past reputation.

When you factor the cap space, roster space, performance and some issues with coach and various opinions on subjective matters, it adds up to feeling like he'd be better off elsewhere.

Just seems to me that the opposition know how to get under his skin and he bites. He just needs to not allow the sledging to get to him.

Serious Question,
How many here accusing JB of being an idiot Penalty Machine,
Would also claim that Wests Tigers were heavily Penalised (Even Unfairly)
this season? (Or even the last few)

I had a Sharks mate tell me some time back it's a long way off the bottom of the Ladder, Not just performance wise - The game itself keeps you there.... Never getting the 50/50's, Benefit of the doubt etc.

You got it right with the comment,

It was a terrible deal at the time and is just another stuff in our recruitment.

I’m hoping those days are finally over 🤞

I agree with everything you said ..

Unfortunately the issue is that he is so overpaid …if he was only on $400k a year he would be back home permanently by now earning similar in the SuperLeague …

Unfortunately for us , he seems determined that he will earn that extra $500k over the next 2 years by seeing out his contract ...i can’t really blame him to be honest …I would probably do the same in his position…. A deal is a deal …

If Bateman feels that he is being hard done by he can always see Lee about doing a 2 for 1 deal with him and Jordan Miller.

I'm sure Lee would be more than happy to accommodate such an arrangement. 🤣

Bateman wasn’t anymore ill-disciplined this year than Api was. Or Sezar for that matter. Not sure why Bateman copped all the heat.
