Johnathan Thurston

Orchestrated or not, you go talk to those kids he interacts with and ask them what they think of him. For a fleeting second they have the attention of a legend of the game, something they will carry with them for the rest of their lives. Not to mention he does other things off the pitch with kids and ambassadorial roles which someone has already drawn attention to. He was a wanker in his younger years but then again I'll bet some of us were as well.

As Ink said, maturity.

What does our captain do during / after games?

Bravo CB. Couldn't have said it better myself.

Many of you Mexicans wouldn't know this but his Uncle was killed in a street fight at Inala in Brisbane

He turned his life around after that . He seemed a petulant brat at times beforehand , watch the 2005 GF Mander was ready to sin bin him for something he said to one of the touchies

When I went to one of the shopping malls in Townsville I was amazed to see a roster in a window of a training group that had exactly when every member of the Cowboys squad was going to a particular school to help with the kids learning and explaining what it took to get to the top

I know most clubs do this , but to have it advertised was a little different

At the Laurie Spina Cup players walked around and watched the games and high fived the kids after the game

The Cowboys really seem to have their fingers on the pulse of Townsville

Thanks for the info Happy. I knew his uncle was killed but not how. Great to hear the clubs involvement with the community, schools etc. it seems to be a really well run club.

Thursten does seem to have grown a brain over the years. He has proven himself to be quite the hypocrite in the Ennis/Smith headpat nonsense. He came out and said it was disrespectful, thats his opinion-fair enough. But wasnt he also one of the QLD SOO tossers singing that 'yippee yi yo' crap after an Aussie Test Match win? That was disrespectful to the NSW players IMO. Not to mention his left-footed shot at goal this year when the Cowboys were giving WT a belting. That is sheer arrogance and disrespect.

He's alright. Bit of a space cadet whose the poster boy for probably the kind of player who'd be on Centrrlink if they weren't blessed with athletic ability, but i've never really had a problem with him. A lot of other players id say i can't stand before him

If his standards are of a "space cadet…kind of player who'd be on Centrrlink" then how would you rate 15 of the other captains in the comp in comparison GNR?

I thought he handled himself quite alright tonight by the way

As some have have said he does "put on a show for the cameras" doesn't he?

Only one word can describe Thurston as a player- AWSOME! He's second to none in this competition. The thing i love about him as a player? He never, ever, ever gives up and never stops encouraging and lifting his team. A real champion.love watching him play.

I read somewhere once that Phil Gould game him some advice about how he will be remembered in the game and since that time he has matured and I agree with Tigermama, he is a good guy off the field, especially iwth the kids and crowd.

I have to agree with most here. Certainly matured and definitely works hard for what he has achieved. The kids love him and he has the time for them. A pretty good ambassador for the game.
