RUGBY League immortal Andrew Johns has outlined his plan to overhaul the NRL, calling for a $12 million salary cap which would ensure only the strongest clubs survive.

Johns told Wide World of Sports having nine Sydney teams was hurting the NRL.

“I’ve got a theory that whatever the salary cap is now, say it’s $9 million; put it up to $12 million and then only the strong survive,” Johns said.

“I’ve said publicly I think we should have a 12-team competition, there’s too many teams in Sydney.

“So if that’s the way you put it up then only the strong survive. The ones that are administered strong, the ones with strong sponsorship, the ones that develop well, and then we get down eventually to 12 teams.”

Johns’ comments come in the wake of the Sharks salary cap scandal which has seen the club investigated for alleged breaches relating to player payments in 2015.

Johns said the current structure of the NRL gave the Brisbane Broncos an advantage as they were able to corner the market on corporate support. He called for the inclusion of another Brisbane team.

“It’s a huge advantage for the Broncos, the Broncos have something like 650 kids on scholarship, so that’s a huge help for them. It does help.

The Knights legend has raised the concept of a 12-team competition in the past, arguing the depth of talent is not there to sustain the current number of teams.

Wants team numbers cut.
Wants additional Brisbane team.
 
If the Tigers continue to have 6 home grounds and continue to divide the supporter base they will be one of the clubs to go…
 
Its becoming pretty obvious that some Sydney teams are not keeping up with the bigger clubs and are struggling to compete. I can see less teams in Sydney in the near future but it wont be the NRL culling teams. Sooner or later the value of their license will make selling up a lot more appealling than than losing money year after year.
 
Not as good as Freddy's call to give the minor premiers a salary cap boost to keep their teams together. Must have both been on the bath salts.
 
Nice to have 650 juniors on scholarships , not so easy picking the best 4 players to put into the system

If WT with catchment area from inner Sydney to outta sticks Campbelltown can't keep a strong team on the field what hope is there for Doggies and Parramatta and Souths? Is it Souths private ownership forking out big dollars?

Sorry I dont get Andrew's comments

Am correct in thinking he is trying to form a superleague type of competition with the best of the best players in a twelve team comp

So to hell with the players and clubs that dont make it

Andrew is saying to pay more money to the best players

If so where is that money going to come from
Supporters who have followed a club thier whole lives will walk away from following football all together
That's less money for Pay TV
That's less money for Telstra
That less money for merchandise
That's less money in sponsorship Ticket sales will go down
The league will only lose money
It will hurt the NRL big time

I have news for Andrew

A FAIR COMPETITION IS A BETTER COMPETITION
Throwing more money at the stronger clubs is not the answer

It is the lopsided competition that is hurting the league and its supporters

Try increasing the cap of the bottom 8 teams before you increase the top 12

Give all supporters hope
That's what we live for
 
That would be a quick way to destroy League in Sydney.
League in Sydney is tribal. It's about smashing other Sydney teams. It's built on hating teams like Manly, the Bulldogs, Parra, Souths, Easts ect. League in Qld is about hating NSW.
Big spending teams like the Roosters don't get the fans. What do you think fans will do if you cut their team? Go and support the team that remains in Sydney? Or tune into other codes?

BRAD Fittler has declared the “time is right” for the Manly Sea Eagles to merge with the North Sydney Bears believing it could be a “behemoth” of a club.

Yep, was my initial thought, a lot of support and money lost
 
If he wants a 12 team competition:

Get rid of Brisbane, Melbourne, North QLD and Warriors…..Easy

Then Newcastle and Canberra - down to 10 ... no worries Joey.

Then you could bring back Bears and Newtown and start again.
 
The obvious merger for mine is Roosters and Manly… two clubs that historically have been strong on the field, and yet still have very small fan bases. They can play the out of Sydney teams at Brookvale and the Sydney derbies at Allianz.

During the post super league scramble, the Sharks should’ve merger with Illawarra, and the Dragons with Souths. With Cronulla now sandwiched between the two halves of the Dragons, I think the Sharks are a suitable choice for relocation.
