Josh Reynolds - over hyped and over paid

Reynolds could be the best thing we have.

The guy has a bad injury run….it happens.
When the dogs were making grand finals he was apart of that, so was Mbye and Thompson for one of them.
These guys are still young and are growing like Brooks.
There’s every chance Reynolds could have his best season, when we signed Scott prince he wasn’t far off what Reynolds is now, he actually hadn’t played in a grandfinal or origins before he came here and he’d had severe injuries also.

He needs a season to be judged on not a handful of games we’re he didn’t go to bad.

The big difference is Prince was only 24 when we signed him…Reynolds is about to turn 30\. There was a lot of upside to Prince, Reynolds not so much.

Reynolds best days, unfortunately for us are more than likely behind him, and his salary does not reflect that. He may cement his spot and make a significant positive contribution to the team this year, but if not, something has got to give.

Totally agree we paid too much and signed for too long.

His last few years at the Dogs he was very ordinary, this dog has definitely had its day unfortunately.

Over hyped? By who?

I have never heard Reynolds going on about how good he is.

If anything, he has been pretty humble and willing to fight for his place in the team.

He had a horror season with injury but there were definitely some games where there was a marked improvement when he came off the bench.

Josh on The Rush Hour speaking about his battle with Benji and Mbyes captaincy. The longer version is at the bottom of the link.

But at least he’s a good team member…

Even he acknowledged he was b grade and didn’t deserve his salary at the time...

I don't think anyone in the team would rate their game last week. It's surely not a show of how they have spent their summer. Disappointing for sure, but this is where Madge will school them on executing their game plan and what a disciplined performance needs to look like. Give them all a chance to turn up for Round 1\. Judge them on that performance.

Someone said it earlier, Reynolds is trying *too* hard. He's always going on about making up for what he missed last season. He needs to relax bit and just try and play his natural game. In trying too hard, he is just making everything worse. Benji is the same, tries to hard and overplays his hand for the most part.

Well, IMO, Maguire certainly has shown his hand with Josh Reynolds.

There is conflicting information coming out of the camp with regards to JR.

Benji said last night on NRL 360 that JR has trained the house down and has been injury free all pre-season, whereas, Maguire gave his reasons for not selecting JR in the top 17 as he has been injured and has only been good the last 2 weeks and he needs get fitter in ISP…hmmmm

In my view, Madge doesn’t see Josh Reynolds as his long term 5/8 to partner Luke Brooks. I think we will see them expedite the development of Jock Madden in 2019 with a view of promoting Madden to the top 30 in 2020\. I see Madge doing the same as what Brad Arthur is doing with his halves in having the up and coming Dylan Brown partnering Moses. A Brooks/Madden combination is what I expect to see in 2020\.

Josh Reynolds will “get the message” that Madge does not rate him and hopefully seeks a Super league contract during 2019.

If true, I agree, the style of game Josh plays as a 5/8 doesn’t cut it in this day and age. He has a poor passing game, a poor kicking game and doesn’t have much speed. His best assets is his support play and displays loads of enthusiasm on the field. For $750k we should expect and deserve more than that!...It’s not JR’s fault he was offered by Cleary a 4year mega contract and who wouldn’t take that!..

Or Madge recognises that jr hasn’t played much over the last 3.yrs and thinks it’s prudent to build his game and confidence in nsw cup before giving him a crack in nrl.

He will be a super charged benji.

I'll say the same thing I said when we signed him

He is a good player , but he is not the right fit for Brooks or the WT's

This I agree with!!

Bit unfair on a bloke who has realistically played about 2 hours of footy in the last 12 months. You can’t blame the bloke for the injuries he’s had

I also agree with this!

I think JRs performance on the weekend shows he still has some good footy left in him….just needs some more fitness and stamina in the next couple of weeks and Benji will start to have some sleepless nights....all the best Josh you have had a bad run with injuries, now go and prove the critics wrong....

All reports are that he killed it for the Maggies the other day. Really don’t think he’d be out of place in the 17, but at the same time, you can’t blame Madge for sticking with the same 17 that’s won the first two weeks. He’ll get his chance. It’s not a question of if, but when. Just has to keep plugging away till his times comes.

I see Benji playing 65% games at 5/8 and Reynolds playing 35% at 5/8 this year. Which isn’t great value from Reynolds however if Benji goes down injured or starts to loose fitness or form Madge has an experienced player to slot in.

Benji will pick up niggles along the way, it will be interesting to see Grub get his chance. Hopefully he takes it with both hands and Marshall will be the one to fight his way back in.
