Journalists

I am really sick of the rise of schoolgirl hysterical gossip mongering so called NRL journalism, led by the likes of News and Fox and individuals such as Rothfield, Bulldog, Crawley, Carayannis, Hooper, Read and the like. Journos getting fed by despicable agenda-driven player managers.

Constant bagging, lies, rumours, and made up stories to fill the 24 hour news cycle. While we expect some of this gutter journalism in other areas, it is typically balanced by more nuanced and serious journalism on the other side. It seems this is now lost in the NRL. Where is the investigative journalism? Who investigates the influence of player managers on the game, the seedy salary cap dealings at the glamour clubs, the corrupt and pervasive influence of gambling on the game and links to officiating, the NRL favouritism towards certain clubs and individuals, the interpretation of the rules? It is nowhere to be seen. And it is a disgrace. They are the important issues and the grubs dont touch on it. Too scared to derail the gravy train they are riding.

Instead we are bombarded with the constant bagging of clubs at the bottom, putting the boot in when you are down, circulating lies and rumours that dig the hole a bit deeper. It is shame it has come to this. Journos, hang your heads in shame.

One can only hope that the NRL gets the Kate McClymont treatment one day.

I agree. Journalists nowadays think they are bigger and more important than the game and players.

It makes me sick how they continue to speculate quoting unnamed sources etc when talking about teams and players.
The NRL should insist on accreditation where journos must achieve accreditation to report on the game.
They need to eeed out the crusty old farts with their hidden agendas

As I’ve said many times, the journalists creed is “ never let the truth get in the way of a good story “. These guys have no shame !!

I've said it before that the best and worst thing to happen to the game in recent years is Fox League. There is not enough news for a 24/7 league channel so they had to fill in time. The only way to do that was to turn the journos into pseudo-celebrities and they love it. They make up stories and it steers the narrative of the game.
Most of the Fox Sports website is them reporting on "breaking news" etc of things that have been said on their own tv show. Usually 360.
The only one who seems ok currently is Webster.

You are 100% correct. They create their own stories and drama.

Before Origin one night they were saying Tedesco was in danger as Edwards was the better option

Next night after team selection the story is how can Teddy be left out of the side.

They have stories ready depending on what happens

It's a business in its own right and the NRL rub their hand$ with glee

Indeed …no such thing as bad publicity according to the NRL

to be fair … it’s the same in other sports I follow … the NFL and EPL

Social media has changed the landscape … it’s just about controversy and click bait and trying to fill a 24:7 365 days a year media world …

at least the likes of Buzz, Anasta and the rest still talk about us…. Let’s start really worrying when they stop

Most of them think they own the air inside the football. Can't stand journalists who think they are tv personalities and public figures. They're a bunch of parasites who make a living spewing negativity and vitriol as though they have earned the right to.

I miss the days where their rumour mongering and slander was as easy to escape from as not picking up a newspaper. But it's everywhere now. Social media, television, even here.

Of course the page 3 Daily Mirror Girl more than compensated for an BS sports articles 😀

For the flack they cop, I'd watch Gus & Anasta & Tallis. The ACTUAL journos are just story fabricators.

Buzz is just a sensationalist who swings both sides of the fence to suit his argument. Read is probably the least annoying. Hooper is by far the biggest fool on TV.

Calling them "journalists" is wrong to begin with...

Is it just me or are Buzz, Crawley, Hooper & Ricchio some of the most despisable idiots in NRL journalism?

I always finish watching any 360 with them on wanting to punch them in the face. Maybe not Buzz due to his age, he can just go to pasture. It's so plainly obvious that Isaac Moses gives them half of their shit stories.

They are doing their jobs. NRL soap opera is what generates interest not the games. You lose and you are the target. It was South’s early in the year.

There are 2 things that attract negative attention constantly from news limited journalists. Left leaning politicians and the wests tigers.

As one of them pointed out our club has a massive loyal support base. Stories are aimed at them.

If the club wasn’t lurching from one disaster to another, there would be no story.

It's not specific to NRL, this is typical now in every sport and worldwide media in general. Every media outlet wants the clicks, the eyeballs; wants 24/7 viewership and wants the ad revenue, so they have to generate vast amounts of content, most of it rubbish.

The ridicule of the Wests Tigers goes beyond NRL “Journalism”.. it surprises me how many numpties on other forums and social media seemingly enjoy putting the boot in on the easy target …

In the old days you would have a bit of sympathy for the teams doing it tough … now it’s just a never ending pile on to join in on the kicking …

it happens in other sports too … the masses prefer to support the champion teams and not the underdog .. just another way society is changing for the worse …
