JT Got Me Back On Track: Nofoaluma

A one-on-one chat with coach Jason Taylor last July was the catalyst for a stunning return to form for Wests Tigers winger David Nofoaluma.

The 23-year-old racked up over 200 metres against the Rabbitohs on the weekend with seven tackle breaks and a career-high six offloads to help guide his side to an impressive 16-point victory.

However, Nofoaluma admits football was far from his mind at different stages of the season last year, with personal issues affecting his performances on the field for the joint venture

"I lost focus with the game," Nofoaluma told NRL.com.

"I wasn't switched on or as professional as I should be and my attitude wasn't the best.

"I had a few off field issues and just needed to get my head back in the game.

"I sat down with JT (Taylor) and he helped me at the backend of last year which kind of showed a lot when my performances started to pick up.

"Then I come into pre-season really clear-minded and focused on footy which helps a lot going into this season because the main focus is on rugby league and everything outside of that looks after itself.

"JT was a big part of that in helping me mentally."

Pleased with Nofoaluma's Round 1 performance against the Rabbitohs, Taylor said he had "big hopes" for the Campbelltown junior who is off-contract at season's end.

"He was our best player at the backend of last year," Taylor said after Friday night's win.

"He's really turned his life and footy around, and you saw that tonight.

"The offloads aren't something we've worked on with him and there was a point where we were thinking is he going to stop at some stage, but it was creating stuff and they were really smart."

The City Origin representative put his newfound offloading ability down to the confidence and maturity he has gained since making his NRL debut back in 2013.

"I have a bit of offload in me but I feel a bit more confident this year, not only in that but as a player and a person," he said.

"Things happen and I just play the way I feel in the moment… I'm not hesitant to do it.

"I want this season to be even better and I've done everything I possibly could in the off-season to make sure I came in with the right mindset and it (Round 1) was a great start."

Sunday's clash with the Wests Tigers and Penrith Panthers shapes as a blockbuster, with New South Wales Origin stars James Tedesco and Matt Moylan going head-to-head at fullback and Tigers skipper Aaron Woods coming up against fellow Blues prop James Tamou at Campbelltown Sports Stadium.

Incredibly for Tedesco, the Panthers are the only side he is yet to score a four-pointer against, but Nofoaluma insists it is only a matter of time that the Camden junior makes it over the line.

"Everyone knows what he can do, and he opens opportunity to the players around him," Nofoaluma said.

"When you've got players like Teddy (Tedesco), Brooksy (Luke Brooks) and Mitch (Moses) that can spark things, the other boys build off that.

"Every player in this team has a role and for the past year the players we've got know what we are capable of.

"As a team, we're going somewhere."

Give credit where it's due,JT has people skills and only the ones that know him personally can judge if he has or hasn't..good article and maybe some on here could broaden their horizons a bit and appreciate what the coach has done to help a player maintain a good profile and level at NRL.
If Noofa gives him credit why can't people on here, after all the players spend most time with the coach, not fans, supporters or spectators..

Whoever is responsible …I wouldn't Trade Nofoaluma for anyone...

Re-sign the 5th Bro...

I think Nofa is the backup fullback from now on. If Teddy is unavailable we move Nofa to fullback, and bring in Chee Kam. Nofa was such a handful to tackle on Friday that you almost want to give him 20 minutes in the middle every week I don't think there's any reason to run Rankin or Hunt again unless we have multiple injuries in the backs.

I have a good contact in the Club, who can give many examples of the people skills of JT. His personal experiences with the coach have been very good.

Mate you get very defensive about the coach.

Most fair Tigers fans say he deserves a 3rd season.

Most fans say they think he should get results this year.

He was not done anything yet to warrant amazing adulation.

he has build some steps, buts now its time for results.

if he gets that praise will come and rightly so.

With mansour out nofa has to be a smoky for the blues unless they pick 4 fullbacks and play them out of position

Teddy may not have scored against Panthers but he tore them a new one last year first time around.

When JT walked into this place it was a mess, he said that it would take 3 years to sort out the cap.
He has moved on a lot of underperforming players not only RF.
He has improved the S&C department, now looks like he has some decent assistant coaches.
If we re-sign the big 4 he should be given some credit.
I will be the first to admit that he has made mistakes with team selections, but sometimes you can only play the cards that are dealt.
Employing Reddy was a huge mistake.
No one here on the forum has coached at NRL level so we don't know all the things that go on behind the scenes.
Let he without fault cast the first stone.

He only asked for a bit of credit for this incidence….
"amazing adulation'' :deadhorse:

Naah...just a little credit for helping Nofo
It could be just another club fluff piece, but I for one am happy Nofos heads in the right place ...thanks to JT...resulting in him playing the way he has been

JT deserves credit for helping get one of our most important players back on track. You rarely hear about the good things that happen at football clubs but this is one of them.

He's by far the most improved player in the competition. At the end of 2015 and beginning of 2016 he was a mess. I even thought he should have been dropped early in the year last year, that's how average he was. It makes sense that he had some off field stuff going on when you see how he's turned the corner. Lets hope he keeps going and re-signs. The nucleus of this side is off the chart.

Agreed. His man management skills are vastly improved from when he took over as HC. Not to say that he didn't have them then but first year was a different beast
