WESTS Tigers will have one of the lowest-paid coaches in NRL history next year, with the three strongest candidates willing to sign on for less than $200,000 a year just to get a chance.

Kevin Walters is firming as the man most likely to replace Tim Sheens, edging ahead of Mick Potter and Matt Parish.

St Helens and former St George Illawarra coach Nathan Brown was never a serious chance, having knocked back an interview request from Tigers CEO Stephen Humphreys.

Walters was interviewed for a second time on Friday and it's believed a decision on the next coach could be made in the next 48 hours. But what the Tigers can pay is being influenced by Sheens' salary of $500,000 a season and their likely payout figure.

The blowtorch will be applied to Sheens when he returns from Test duties today, with the Tigers set to impose a deadline for him to accept a senior role in the front office. His next move is full of intrigue, with influential figures at the Tigers making a behind the scenes push for Sheens to replace Bill Harrigan as the referees' boss.

If that move were to eventuate it would allow the Tigers to negotiate a reduced payout for Sheens and free up some much needed cash.

Tigers officials have a scheduled board meeting in a fortnight but are preparing to convene a special meeting this week once they have consulted Test stars Benji Marshall and Robbie Farah.

THE relationship between Tim Sheens and Benji Marshall is officially over.

Take it as read that the Test coach wants nothing to do with the Wests Tigers five-eighth. The popular mail is that Marshall may have played a role in Sheens' sacking last month.

Sheens was initially peeved at Tigers captain Robbie Farah, but the pair have patched things up.

Gee the favourites to getting the Wests Tigers gig change more often than I change my jocks .If this is the last three I would go Potter,Walters and Parish in that order

Experience has to win out in the end in this situation

100%

prime example is the difference between McGuire & Kearney.

McGuire's experience took Souths from 10th to 4th

Kearneys inexperience over the past 2 seasons took a side from 9th to the basement .

Toovey worked at Manly to a certain extent but he was taking over the premiers and he had been assistant there for a few years .

out of our supposed 3 contenders it has to be Potter .

I do like the fact that whoever takes the position out of the 3 is doing it soley for the opportunity… I'd have to go with potter though then Walters

Walters reminds me of Lamb the laugh of the party ….. Are the board going down this path once again .Then there were 3 Potter is the only one I would consider.

Potter for sure! What are they thinking??? If someone with that much experience is willing to sign on for only $200,000 then they'd be nuts to choose a rookie coach over him :brick:

We all know what often happens with favourites, think West Tigers and Pierro yesterday. To me it looks like Potter, the last coach to come into contention and who is now finishing the strongest. I sincerely wish him well.

Kevin isn't too bad
Was an assistant to Bennett for a number of years then got sacked in a clean out
Coached catalans in super league to within one match of the gf
Been assistant to Bellamy for a few years
And he was an excellent half so he could provide some direction and mentor our halves which we have always lacked under sheens

Still potter for me though

Walters would be fine. Comes from a winnjing culture; is tough and uncompromising. As a New South Welshman living in Brisbane, you come to recognise the laid-back but deadly serious approach Queenslanders have to their league. They may look as though they don't take it that seriously but they hate losing worse than the most neurotic and long suffering Wests Tigers fan.

If Walters brings Alfie with him you will have two of the best halves ever to have played the game coaching us. No doubt they will also call on other Broncos/ Queensland mates to help out over time. We need to instill a winnig culture and I think he could do it.

Anyone who compares him to Lamb is a goose.

I'd be happy with either Walters or Potter. If, however, the committee decides to go with Parish, then I'll support him as well. It's exciting times at the Tigers I reckon.

Walters has my mouth watering cause he will bring Allie. This would be insane for our halves

Alf has a business on the Sunshine Coast and has just recently become a grandfather , don't be so sure he will come down to Sydney

I hope the journalist didn't get this information from a courier making a delivery at Concord last Friday and Walters actually is firming as the favourite. I too like the idea of who Kevin could bring to the club. Both support staff and players.

The tigers are going to have a lot of thinking to do when it comes to choosing a coach, it is like a popularity contest with the tigers they can't decide who the favourite will be.

I still say Potter is the best of the three and I think sanity will prevail. From what you read and the body language of the three coaches, Potter seems to have the best credentials . Anyway I screamed long and hard for a new coach so Iam willing to give who ever gets the gig a fair go and I certainly dont have great expectations for 2013, but I do expect a culture change and a harden attitude

I think the last piece indicates how much influence Marshall has at the Tigers. I would not be surprised if he spoke to Humpries and said its him or me, your choice and then Armageddon broke out with players moving on etc
