Players are milking the hip drop for all it's worth. Most of the time the ref misses them and it's only the players laying down that forces a ruling, and then suddenly a quick recovery when they get a result. And it's always the hardest working players that are in danger of being suspended from every club.

Well burton got off , given grade one , what a f****ing joke , he smashed staggs head into the ground and walks away , API was no where near as dangerous.
Also dogs prop got hit with a grade two for a little trip , a club needs to take these morons to court
Comparing like to like, Nikorima got 2 weeks for a fairly innocuous hip drop tackle also. Api has been charged for 3 offences now within 8 weeks and has gotten away with just fines for 2. So I guess an extra week for that reason alone isn’t really that outrageous.

I think that the club should lawyer up and get this downgraded to Grade 1. All the other Grade 2 offences this year have resulted in major injury. Not to say this is the way they should be adjudicate but the precedence is that this how they have adjudicated penalties for Dangerous Contact this season. Not only was Martin not injured but he continued to play. If the club fights this and is successful in getting it downgraded Api can play next week but 3k poorer.
If Katoni Staggs lies down after the Burton tackle holding his head and writhing in pain Burton possibly gets a sin bin and weeks. Instead he gets up straight away - stand up guy unlike some. You would have sworn Martin had a serious injury after the Api tackle until he got the result he wanted and played on.
The system is a complete joke lacks any level of consistency and or understanding and meanwhile the NRL is taking in a whole lot of money through fines.

That Burton tackle was worth a send off and he should have copped four weeks for it. What an absolute disgrace and farce he gets a fine. The officiating and lack of consistency is disgusting.
Why is Martin still being accused of feigning injury? He tried to play on but eventually left the field. Early reports (pre-scans) suggesting he is out for 3 weeks.

I think the decision is random. You can see players getting off for this incident or just getting a week or getting what Api got.
I find it very unclear what distinguishes many of these incidents and I'm frustrated because I don't see intent in the way a hip drop is meant to work.
I know that doesn't excuse carelessness but I'm still not convinced this is worse than many that didn't even attract a charge. It's either a penalty and charge offence or it's not, and it's not playing that way.
Referees are in a strange space at the moment as they grapple with ultra slow replays, judging consequence based on injuries, looking at player intention, evaluating how players fall in a tackle. All of those elements combined create random outcomes.

If the NRL.is taking injuries into consideration when suspending players ( eg laulili with Simmonson), then they should also take lack of injury into account as well.

Personally I think rulings are fairly consistent with some outliers. Now when I say consistent that is assuming comparing apples with apples. Referencing the Burton tackle does not do this so whilst I agree he is lucky not to be missing games comparing a hip drop to a throw is not apples with apples.
There is no intent in any of the hip drops we've seen this season (or malice or any othe synonyms getting used). Since they were outlawed I've only even seen one that I thought was intentional (Munster about 5 years ago). There is rarely intent in any of the actions that draw suspension.
Additionally, I see a lot of comments (not just Api but from all fans of all teams) regarding what else is he supposed to do. 2 options. 1 tackle the legs, your body will impact the ground before landing on legs. 2 tackle the waist and slide to the legs as the tackle continues. I don't expect the defender to be thinking about this as they make the tackle but practice this so they become the default options. There is a reason some players are being done repeatedly. It is a technique issue.
As for the differences from hip drop to hip drop. The force of the drop which is greatly impacted by the speed of the swing which is greatly impacted by how badly you lose your feet. And landing position. If your full weight lands on legs it will be graded worse than some weight landing on legs whilst some is also taken by the ground.
Finally, as we've seen, injury affects grading as well. Some the mechanics have looked better/worse than others but injury outcomes are different and thus grading is different to what the mechanics look.

Yet the MRC are not judging in the heat of the moment and are still very inconsisttent, that Burton throw on staggs could have had horrendous consequences and sometimes the affects of whip lash (head & neck trauma) can be delayed .
I think hip drops occur when a player tackles an attacker from behind and trying to pull him back to prevent him finding hid front....elbows and knees.
As opposed to the old style hit around the hips fro the back of side and slide down, or the front and drive

What I will say is API has 4 weeks to change his tackling style which he has used his whole career up to now, otherwise we will see the him getting the same charges put on him every week or two when he gets back on the field.
