Lame Membership Numbers - Whats the fix?

Its brought up every year and has been discussed in many threads…

Why is WT membership so low?

I know WT is popular with 200 years of combined history, wide fan base and solid merchandise sale.. But our membership numbers are ordinary.

Would a permanent home ground change fix it? 3 to 2 or 3 to 1?

-No board voting rights?
-3 home grounds?
- Geography, demographic and traffic logistics to multi venues and monday night games?
- muddled territory and brand/identity?

Lets make WT number 1

Probably all of the above, plus costs, some clubs have better deals for less, plus winning people will get behind winners - sad but true.

one word: success.

the tigers came second last last season. im sure membership numbers were high going into 2006\. you can analyse for eternity, but i think the biggest factor by far is simply that success breeds supporters and members.

Memberships were 11k at the start of 2012\. really pathetic given our recent successes and position as premiership faves….

Turmoil and instability with the board . That's for me anyway, but I still fork out the cash.

I'm not a member and don't intend to sign up.
why?
i work shift and can't be guaranteed to make enough games to get my moneys worth
three home grounds is a pain

Unlink membership with game attendance.

and this

offer a membership with a jumper, some sort special which didn't include game tickets.
i know eels have a pack for non or minimal game attendance people

i live 10 minutes away from c'town, have good access to the city games, and I'm not a member, what about people interstate? or far away from the city?

These things take time and patience. Rugby League historically has not favoured a membership base and has many other sports to contend with. AFL on the other hand, well all other sports come a distant second in Victoria so they put a lot of emphasis on being a member of the clubs they support.

I don't think it is financial as the new packages are quite reasonably priced. It requires a culture change and as others have said…winning footy games will help.

Why do people have to have jerseys etc included in memberships when you can already buy the bloody thing if thats what you want.

Its a membership, not a jersey….do you complain that you dont get a steak s/wich included when you buy a coffee?

Do you not realise in an attempt to keep membership prices down, the goods that are included in the membership packs (cap keyring sticker lanyard etc) are of minimal quality....if you want quality the prices soar

I read 1500 odd somewhere HT

I assume that is exactly what the do hence the reason they wouldn't become a member.

Why not sell them a jersey and offer a $30 membership as an add on. The pack would not have to come with tickets, maybe just a sticker and key ring.
That would drive the numbers up and it is essentially just a $30 donation.

I'm sure winning games would be a big boost too but you won't win every year so there needs to be some thinking outside the box.

On field success is a part of it. Reasonable pricing points at lower level memberships also should see an increase

RL fans in general and in particular our fan base seems to have a skewed view of what membership represents.

Membership is about contributing what you can, at what level is appropriate to support your club. RL/WT fans seem to view membership as "what's in it for me". To build a club that is not what membership should be about. There needs to be a attitude shift over the base if WT are to grow and thrive as a club.

It used to be a badge of honor to be there for the bad times and it makes the good times all the more special. Now it is about chasing successful clubs for bragging and gloating rites.

If you don't join because you don't know what games you can attend (if any) there is now the Supporters membership. $50 gives you a supporters kit (sticker, key ring), 10% discount on gear, ability to buy finals tickets, and you can buy extra tickets at $25 for 2 GA tickets.

Sounds like a decent deal to me.

I spoke to a manager at the Giants yesterday and she said they have a team of 14 people within Fan Development which includes memberships, engagement, marketing. They had 12000 members last year and their games are split across 8 in Sydney and 4 in Canberra. They are not a successful side on the field but their numbers are better than ours.

I think our numbers might go up this year given you can just buy a LO or CSS or ANZ membership, but if we want to compete with the AFL, we need to put more resources into our membership departments.

This is 100% on the mark. The attitude of some of the supporter base baffles me. You are here because you love and follow the club. A way of actually showing that is fronting up and putting your money where your mouth is. Would it be nice if they threw a jersey in, a house and a car? Of course it would be but the expectations of some fans are ridiculous. If people want to throw all their toys out of the cot because we had a bad year, then you are kidding yourself if you just slide back in when we start winning.

I personally feel like the Memberships are good value and have been a member for the past 5 years. Not being able to go to one of the home grounds is not an excuse as the packages cater different packages for all the grounds. My old man is no chance of getting to all CS games so he gets the Sydney/LO package. It's that simple.

The one thing I really noticed last year was the club being a lot more proactive with deals and ideas in making the members happy when the season wasn't going too well. They are making some great headway in trying to give the fans what they want and deserve so I encourage everyone to sack up and buy a membership.

I didn't take on membership last year for a multitude of reasons, and was considering signing up again this year, however my weekends are usually very busy so I'm opting to just be a non-ticketed member this year and just rock up when I can.

I'm curious to know what the percentage is of non-ticketed members compared to ticketed.

What about Parra?? 2 wooden spoons in a row. Yet they are cracking over 17000 members already. Established before WT but surely another Sydney club WT can be compared to.
