Laurie Daley announces he will stand down as a NSW State of Origin selector
By Adam Mobbs From: The Daily Telegraph August 03, 2010 12:00AM
LAURIE Daley has become the first NSW selector to fall on his sword, revealing last night he will stand down in the wake of Queensland's fifth successive series win.
Commentating for Fox Sports last night, Daley let slip he would be quitting.
Asked if Newcastle hat-trick hero Akuila Uate would be in the plans of Blues selectors next year, Daley said he would not be involved.
"I won't be a selector next season," he confirmed.
The Country Origin coach was part of a four-man selection panel alongside Bob Fulton, Bob McCarthy and Geoff Gerard, who have shown no signs that they too would step down despite their role in NSW's horror run.
Blues coach Craig Bellamy is set to stand down after three unsuccessful years in the role. When asked about possibly replacing Bellamy at the helm, Daley was non-committal.
"They haven't decided on who's going to coach," he said, before talking down his chances of landing the job. "No, I wouldn't think I'd be in the mix. There's some great coaches in the NRL - Johnny Cartwright, Ricky Stuart, Dessie Hasler - all these people could do the job."
But just last month Daley said that holding any role with NSW would be "a privilege".
"If I was invited on to any position with NSW I would consider it because I have a passion to see NSW do well - whether that be as a selector, coach or boot-strapper," he said. "It is always a privilege."
The NSWRL has commissioned an independent report in to NSW's performances in recent years.
