LAWRENCE: ‘I’M THE FITTEST I’VE BEEN IN THREE YEARS’

YOU can’t accuse Tigers centre Chris Lawrence of not being a team player.

Lawrence would be the first to admit his past three seasons haven’t been his best, but as it turns out the former Test centre has a very legitimate excuse for his patchy form.

Widespread injuries throughout the Tigers’ ranks have forced the 26-year-old to spend the past three seasons playing busted.

After bursting onto the scene as a 17-year-old in 2006, great things were expected of the St Gregory’s alumnus, particularly after making his Test debut at 21\. However, after recovering from potentially career-ending hip injury in 2011, Lawrence’s rep career has failed to kick on, thanks mainly to a troublesome ankle.

“It’s been very frustrating but you’ve got to put the team first,” Lawrence tells RLW.

“(Over the past three years) I’ve been coming off a couple of big injuries and then having to play through those injuries because we’ve had no one else.

“At the start of 2012, I came through and that was probably the last time I was fully fit. At the back end of that year I got an ankle injury and I re-did it at the start of 2013.

“I had major surgery at the end of the year and only came back just before round one last year. In the middle of the year it felt like I was getting over it but then I had a slight re-occurrence.

“(But) we were getting to the point where we playing two back-rowers on the wing, and as senior player in the team, if I could run and I could move my legs I had to be out there.”

It’s been a long road, however, in the lead up to the 2015 season, Lawerence tells RLW that his ankle is fully recovered and that he had his best pre-season in almost three years.

“I’ve been pretty much able to do everything this pre-season, which is probably the first time in about three years I’ve been able to do all the running,” he says.

“I’m under no illusions. The body’s not going to go back to where it was five or six years ago but I’ve been able to do this pre-season injury free and I really feel like I’m in the best shape I’ve been in for years.”

<yawn>.. typical response so as to ensure that he gets picked. If he was busted why was he selected? Pretty much over Lawrence.</yawn>

By the sounds of it I think most people on this forum have a soft spot for Chris.
He deserves a good year injury free, fingers crossed for him.

Hoping for a good season from him this year. Might not ever get that explosive pace back, but if he could even get back to half as good as he was he'll be in for a good year. It's a cruel game sometimes.

I have high hopes for Lawrence this year. I'm interested to see how his body fares under the new strength and conditioning team.

The good thing about Chris being out there and fit,he will be of great benefit to the younger guys and as well as the team as a whole…

Hopefully he will surprise us how well he does go...

Well he's not injured, that's merely the first step in being able to play in the NRL.

Can he catch the ball, and make reads in defence?

Has he still got speed (even if not as much as a teenager, enough to make a break and score most of the time)? If not then his fitness is irrelevant and he needs to move into the back row.

A smart back rower who runs hard and with good angles could come in handy. But then again we've all been saying this all off season, lets just see what he can do

Lawrence here has done two things.

1\. Admitted he has been playing below what everyone (himself included) expected of him over the past 3 years due to injuries.

2\. Has exhausted any excuses for this season. So it's do or die for him this year. Given his contract ends at the end of this season (I believe), he needs to have a massive year.

I don't mind if his straight line speed doesn't improve. I just want him to be able to move laterally with some speed and agility and not like a 40 year old prop who has two dodgy knees, two shot ankles and is playing in a foot deep of mud.

Anyone with two eyes can see that the bloke has been playing on one leg for a few years now.

If he is fit we should see a VAST improvement on his form.

Fingers crossed we know this kid is good.

Add to that he has a left shoulder issue as well

I hope to God he can make it back , for his sake and the teams sake

He seems the nicest bloke to boot , good luck Rowdy

If he does get back to form we have an extremely slick 1-7.

I think we will learn an incredible amount about Chris in the 9's, if he can hold is own in the more expansive version of the game I think he will be in for a good season.

I think it would be nice if the article read
"The most flexible I've ever been"
No ones ever doubted hit fitness levels

Lawrence's poor form wasn't through lack of effort

It would be nice if the article read " I am back to somewhere near the speed I had",

Pretty much over you did you not read the article he played because we were playing 2 rowers on the wing and as he said 'Quote ' if my legs and feet could move he played because we were running out of troops. Its people like you who sho just go and support the dragons or someone else
