Lawrence eyes Origin

Wests Tigers centre Chris Lawrence is desperate to break into Origin football this year and has urged NSW selectors to seriously consider throwing teammate Blake Ayshford in alongside him.

Lawrence has already played for Australia but is yet to wear the blue of NSW, robbed of the opportunity last year due to a horrific hip injury.

But the 23-year-old looms as a near certain selection this season.

And Lawrence believes Ayshford would be the perfect ally at right centre as the Blues look to shut down Queensland duo Greg Inglis and Justin Hodges and go some way towards ending the Maroons' six-year dominance.

"I haven't played an Origin game yet but I'd definitely love the challenge and contest that Origin brings," Lawrence told Sportal on Wednesday.

"If I got the chance to play I'd relish it and Blake is definitely someone the selectors should be looking at (as well)."

"He was a standout for us last year - I thought he was our best back - and was unlucky not to get a call-up to the Four Nations squad."

"He's a great player and an Origin player of the future and if he's playing good footy at that time of the year I think (he should be considered)."

"He'll not only cope with Origin, he'd excel at it."

While happy to talk up his mate, Lawrence is just as desperate to play his part in the planned Blues' revival after being tormented by the Maroons' ongoing success.

"It's been pretty frustrating sitting on the sideline and watching a great Queensland side win every year," he said.

"It's something I don't like seeing."

"Hopefully I am fit and healthy at that time of the year and I get my chance to play for NSW."

"If I start the year well and am playing consistent football with the Tigers, I'll put my hand up and the rest is up to selectors."

"It's all about the Tigers at the moment."

Expectations on the joint venture club are high leading into the new season are high and Lawrence understands why.

Ahead of his first appearance of the year in Saturday's Foundation Cup clash with the Roosters, he declared: "We do have a good squad with a good mix of youth and experience and it's been building the last couple of years."

"We've got a good buy in Adam Blair and we all believe we've got the side to do it but it's a matter of going out on the field and doing it for 26 weeks."

"It's a great opportunity to win a comp. We've been close the last couple of years but haven't got over the line but hopefully we can learn from that."

Your a shoe-in Rowdy… And if the Blues selectors are serious in putting up someone capable of marking Inglis, Ayshford should go close if he continues his 2011 form!

You don't want to jinx him but considering his form last year, if Ayshford has another big start to the year, he could definitely see himself in contention.

He has gone from strength to strength over the last 2 years. Easily my favourite player right now.

Talking about Ayshford's chances for origin, I know he's in contention, but who else is out there that would be any competition for Blake getting the #3 Blues jumper?

The only player I can think of is Jennings, and he wasn't in that great form last year. From memory he had 1 try all season (albeit in Origin).

Possibly Idris as he can be very a bery destructive ball runner, but NSW may be better served by injecting him into the game as a 2nd tower late in the game.

Jamie Lyon has said he isn't interested in Origin and Gasnier has retired..

Who else is there?

besides jennings, there isnt really anyone else. in my opinion jennings is just infront of ayshford at the moment, but if he were to get injured id be happy for ayshford to take the centre position. as long as they dont put beau scott there :deadhorse:

Hayne was used there last year, Hoppa Jr is gone for 2 years, Tahu has recently indicated that he still wants to play Origin again. Jennings went well enough in G1 last year despite an ordinary year in club footy.

So its pretty thin on the ground for experienced centres ATM.

Cooper retired from rep footy didn't he?

If Matt King from Souths gets off to a flying start he might be considered too. He does have origin experience as well.

I'm sure Cooper retired from rep footy, but even so, he is on the left.

So unless Tahu has a big start to the year (and I mean BIG), there are only 2 main options for the right centre spot.

Ayshford or Jennings.

He could select Hayne but he must be desperate to have a FB ahead of a specialist right centre.

Forgot Matt King was back. I've always like him on and off the field. Shame he went to Souths.

He would be another smokey if he picks up where he left off.

Josh Morris is another contender I guess.

He should be concentrating on staying healthy for the year at this stage. If he does that the rest will take care of itself. I think the chances of the Blues having an all Tigers centre pairing is about as likely as the majority of this forum rooting for Fifita to be a success this year

Lawrence on 9 saying Sticky has been in contact with Sheens about how he is going/what he would like to see from him etc.

Sounds very encouraging.

Possibly Idris but I think he is getting to big for the centres now Lawrence and Ayshford are a very likely pair going into the future I think if NSW picked Lawrence and Ayshford Mals's monobrow would furrow and he would be concerned
