Lawrence set to stay a Tiger for life
Still at Concord and the Tigers have found a clever way to ease their salary cap dramas – and keep local cub Chris Lawrence for life on a new three-year deal.

It’s no secret Lawrence was told he could go a year early in 2015; with his $600,000 salary weighing heavily on the joint venture’s cap.

Despite some impressive form in the back row, Lawrence was always at long odds to find a club willing to pay so much at this stage of his career.

We can reveal Lawrence also has an option in his favour for 2017 - at the same value. If, as expected, he decides to take up that options, the Tigers' salary cap will be under immense pressure next year.

Preliminary talks have begun around a compromise that would see Lawrence stay on for just $300,000 in 2017 - and be given two further years at the same salary. The 27-year-old is now waiting to see how his body holds up in the first half of the season, before deciding how long he wants to continue.

If Rowdy does resign at value,I have no problem with him staying with us…he is one player that I hold in high regard, not just as a quality player but as a person in who does a heck of a lot within the community to promote our club and rugby league....if not for that horrendous injury,he would have been Representing Australia...

I wouldn't be too surprised if they are going off Tony33's guestimations. The media these days quotes social media. LOL

We can thank Sheens and Humpty for previous Cap Management that puts us in the position where Rowdy has this option in his contract for 2017 at an inflated price..

These negotiations were initiated by Rowdy himself some 6 months ago..Shows what a loyal and true Clubman he is…If the new deal is agreed to it will benefit both the player and the Wests Tigers..1\. Rowdy gets job security 2, the Club is eased of the burden in the 2017 Cap of an overinflated salary that can be used in other areas..

I hope it goes through his form since moving to the Backrow has been great and will continue to improve the more he plays...Injury free he will become a weapon for us again...

And this is where the club should negotiate a good deal for Lawrence in the UK where he can continue his career on softer grounds. We have a host of young forwards in the lower grades and the money can be better spent on retaining our halves, hooker and fullback.

Great stuff by Lawrence and the Club. Wish all signings work this way, just like the old days. I realise it's more professional sport these days. But it's great to see a local junior come through the ranks, then after years of earning top dollar, help make it easy on the club to retain the up and coming juniors.

One season for $600,000 compared to three for $900,000 shows what the club means to Chris. Some players would just take the $600,000 next year and then head to the Super League to cash in on good money over there for the later part of their career. Quality player and guy and would love the Tigers to re-sign him at the $300,000 price tag over three seasons.

Guy plays 80 minutes, is probably our best backrower despite only spending a year there, wants a sensible deal and you think we should farm him off to the Superleague?

OK.

What kind of bozo leaks this stuff to the media!?

Probably all part of a plan to get the kids to stay. Get a story out in the media that a club legen is willing to rejig his contract in order to get the cap in better shape might just send a message to a few players who are about to enter contract talks.

Also could be just crap that a jurno has invented or put two and two together and has come up with ten

Most definitely. 27 years of age, injury prone and he is not really a bargain if you have a host of far more talented players in crucial positions coming off contract. Opportunity cost. We have many good forwards in the lower grades.

If we truly did, they'd be pushing past a 27 year old converted centre and a young bloke who has so far failed to live up to his potential.

Since they're not, I think that says a lot for those kids coming through.

But this 27 year old converted centre you are speaking of has been paid top dollar as a strike centre for years yet has no pace and has spent an inordinate amount of time on the sideline. The worst case we find a young forward from the market to replace him which is a far more palatable situation than losing our good young hooker, halves for fullback.

In a business like the NRL i hope none of our administrators think like this.

You can't run a smart operation by holding a grudge against a bloke because he got injured and the previous administration acted like idiots.

On the latter half of last season CL is easily worth this deal and it would be smart to try and hold onto a guy who offers leadership and class on and off the field, plays well for 80 and is willing to see the bigger picture for the benefit of all.

Anyway, if we want to crucify or farm out guys who are overpaid and miss too many games then Lawrence is second on that list, not first.

Yes, and now he will be paid commensurate amount for his efforts. You're judging his past paypacket unfairly. He was resigned on the cusp of origin selection, pre hip injury and IIRC he'd played for Australia. Got paid in line with what top line centres were asking for then by a previous management. He and the club both know that he's had to reinvent himself, and still has plenty of gas in the tank. By the sounds of it he doesn't want to go anywhere so the club holds the aces this time.

But nah, let's hook the best second rower this club has at the moment because his last contract was too much…

A smart operation would sign up Cherrington, Brooks, Moses and Tedesco. It worries me greatly the club appears to make Lawrence's signing a priority when clearly the future of the club is the signing of the four players above and Woods. Opportunity cost.

Who is saying these young guys aren't a priority…?
