Lawrence set to stay a Tiger for life...

You'd think all this stuff for Lawrence, Brooks Moses etc would all be somewhat on hold until Buckets comes in. It's his domain afterall. A bit of groundwork done sure, but the cap is one of his primary roles.

Think he starts next week, anyone know?

Saw Buckets on the TV several days ago in discussions with Robbie so I assume he has already started.

Wests Tigers want to tear up the final year of Chris Lawrence's lucrative contract, with a view to replacing it with a new one that keeps him at the club for two more seasons.

The Tigers are under immense salary cap pressure for 2017, due in part to massive back-ended deals for Lawrence and Farah.

Farah is on the best part of $1 million next year, while Lawrence is on $600,000\. Those commitments alone make it difficult to retain several off-contract players they want to keep, let alone go into the open market.

While Lawrence is entitled to every cent of his current contract money, the Tigers are hoping he may consider a new deal that guarantees him $450,000 per season for 2017 and 2018.

The Tigers have first got to clear the proposal with the NRL, which rarely allows variations to contracts that have already been lodged and registered.

However, the joint-venture outfit is hopeful of clearing that hurdle and then presenting it to Lawrence's agent, in the belief it could be beneficial for both parties.

The current Tigers administration believes previous officials have paid "overs" for Lawrence, with the original deal tabled after he broke into the Australian teams of 2010-11.

The back-rower was given permission to negotiate with other clubs in the hope he would seek a release, although it wasn't financially feasible for rivals, even after the Tigers' offer to cover some of his freight.

Asked about the prospect of spreading his wage over two seasons as part of an extension deal, Lawrence said: "If that's the case, it's something I'll talk to with my manager and if it works for both parties it is something we will look at …

"I haven't spoken to my manager. I made it pretty clear to him him that if any of those talks would happen that they should happen without me so that I could focus on my football.

"Then when there was some progress with that he could involve me."

Lawrence has played 175 games for the Tigers since his debut over a decade ago, a figure that would be much higher if not for a spate of injuries. The 27-year-old said his preference would be to finish his career where it started.

"Ideally, yes, in a perfect world you want to be a one-club player," Lawrence said.

"The more the NRL goes on the less likely it is for players to do that. I'd love it but if that's not the case I've just got to get on with it, so we'll wait and see what happens.

"It's like anything – at the end of each season there is always a review. Players, in this day and age, with contracts don't mean everything these days.

"Some guys might have contracts but still have the reason to look elsewhere and vice versa for the clubs.

"For me, I didn't worry about that. I tried to get my game right and left it to the manager and the club to work it out."

The Tigers are hopeful of retaining hooker Mania Cherrington and prop Ava Seumanufagai, although their top priority is hanging onto Luke Brooks and Mitchell Moses.

The halves have options in their favour for next year and have until June to activate them.

"I've left it all to my management; I just want to concentrate on footy," Moses said. "I honestly don't think about it at all. If I see [speculation] about it I don't pay any attention to it at all."

My God! Every time I read about the extent of these back-ended contracts I just wonder how the hell the incompetent idiots that penciled them got a job in the first place. Morons! Look where it has left the club now - without any wriggle room at all. Another year coming up where the club is left with its "hands tied behind its back". All very well for the forum members to vent their spleen at the club, but really - it is the past administrations that have crippled this organization for at least another year. VERY frustrating!

Yep, i agree, you know its not good when you have Salary cap issues for the season that hasnt even kicked off (ie next year)

Any that thread of how we are going to attract decent players, well, with no money we will have no hope.

Gee i hope this works out.

Our best backrower by a mile and he seems to me like he is getting better!

450 is a good deal!

450 is a good deal for him but not so good for the club.I dont think he is worth more than 350

This is where i maintain my ongoing rant about Award wages in the NRL
A player in red hot form is worth every cent of 450K
A player who is not should get paid according to form.

$450k is still overs for Lawrence IMO. As a comparison, **Gillett is on about the same amount up at Brisbane**.

It's been reported Gillett is looking for a 3 year deal at $750k per year.

Wow $450k per year. Bargain. Agreed as he is by far the best backrower this year and will only continue to improve.
I have no idea what Gillett is being paid, but I bet will be close to double that next year, when one takes into consideration TPS's. Which we as supporters and not Managers or the Player have no idea what the arrangement is. All I know is that with TPS's there is the opportunity of some very creative agreements and transactions. Good luck to the Clubs that take full advantage. Its obvious that we are not one of those. Hopefully we see Chris play his whole careers at Wests Tigers. PS would not be surprised if he gets a blue's jersey in the future. Well he would come very close. Being a greedy would rather him not miss any NRL"s games for us in future due to Injury or Representative football.

Yes, but he's currently on $450k, as I said.

$450K is a good deal considering how the TV money goes up over the next years.

And people go nuts about back-ended contracts, but at the time Lawrence was an emerging elite centre and already played for Australia. At the time it was a good deal and nobody complained.

If anyone truly knew that Lawrence would get injured, struggle to regain his backline explosiveness, be held at centre until we changed coaches, then develop into our better backrower - then quit footy, because you should be putting your clairvoyant talents to better use on the stocks and the ponies.

I looked it up the other week, Lawrence's deal was literally signed about 10 days before he did his hip. I don't know what we did, but the football gods were sure angry at us around that time.
Tuiaki, Lawrence, Dwyer and even Tuqiri had a couple of years (or more in TT and SD's case) wiped out due to freak injuries, all within about 18 mths.

but but but Massoud said a page ago that Rowdy has already taken up his option for 2017….so confused... 😕 😕 😕

Great stuff Rowdy in fantastic form Win/Win for both player and Club if it happens...

Hmm, $450k , I can live with that as Rowdy is clearly our best backrower and is sticking in defence and running some great lines in attack. Very disappointed how amateur the club has been over the past 10 years in backending contracts. We should be having a red hot crack in the playe market next year but we won't, and we'll remain in the bottom half of the comp as a result.

What you also have to remember is the salary cap will be $10 Million in 2018 which means the average top 25 player is getting 400k including the lowest of your 25 in that average

I would like to see us move forward as quickly as possible with no players from the Pre 2010 era

The club needs to change , I know Rowdy is a legend , but I can't see how anything will change with any of these guys still here
