Lawrence: too early to rule out Tigers

March 3, 2013

CHRIS LAWRENCE reckons Wests Tigers fans shouldn't be too despondent about their team's last-start trial loss to Sydney Roosters, saying it will take three months to gauge the premiership's genuine front-runners.
Lawrence, who watched the entire second half of the 28-16 defeat with an icepack on his shoulder, conceded while his team's final pre-season hitout wasn't pleasant viewing it should not define the Mick Potter-coached Tigers.
''A lot of people look at clubs during trials and say this 'n that, but I think it takes a good four or five weeks for a team to really find their feet,'' he said before indicating his shoulder was fine and he would play in the opening round match against Newcastle. ''It's not until the 10-12 week mark that you get a good guide as to who'll give it a good shot.
''I'm extremely confident we'll do well. We've been training great and it's now really just a matter of putting it all together on the field.''

The Australian representative said he and his teammates were toughened by a challenging 2012 season which was ruined by a long list of injuries that rarely allowed for the Tigers to select their strongest team.
''We had to make a lot of changes throughout last year and as a team we learned things happen during a season that you can't control; if someone has to play out of position there's no point dwelling on that. I guess we learned in those instances an individual's effort has to be above where we [normally] need to be because while there'll be times when we mightn't win, there'll be more wins than losses if we focus on our game.''
Lawrence predicted Adam Blair, who was considered the world's best prop when he joined the club from Melbourne, would shine after he came under unwelcome scrutiny last season.
''He's been training the house down, and really leading the way,'' he said. ''He's been spending plenty of time mentoring the younger blokes and is in great shape. It's obvious he wants a big year.''

I'm getting tired of these type of stories… The footy can't start soon enough for me....yawn

He makes a good valid point though…..if we can hang with the top half of the ladder till halfway or so and we start to get some forwards back....its the back end of the season where it all happens
Looking at our squad & depth though - especially the forwards, Im not convinced or confident, but I wont write em off yet

last year we won 1 of our 1st 6 games and we were chasing our tail all year and never recovered after a few injuries, it is so vital to get of to a flyer at least win 4 of our 1st 6 games.
Then Origin comes around and a few injuries and our season could be over before we know it.

I hope we still some true grit and determination this season, even in the games we don't win. What I don't want to see are players heads dropping (a hard ask I know) and throwing in the towel when injuries occur, or when we're simply beaten by a better side. If the team plays as a team, I'm sure they'll do better than last year.

That last paragraph is a laugh…if Blair is mentoring our young forwards we dont have a chance..
Blair is the best runner of the ball , without the ball, we have . Thats why he is great at training and he is our number one DUMMY runner.

well blair is probably the most experienced forward we have besides galloway, so it would make sense. Also, he was the NZ vice captain.

**"I'm extremely confident we'll do well. We've been training great and it's now really just a matter of putting it all together on the field.''**

In how many post match interviews last season did we hear the comment 'we trained great all week, but it just didn't come together for us on the day'? Training great means nothing if it can't be produced when it matters. God I really hope this changes this year, but I'm not as confident as Chris seems to be. However, it's good that the players are confident though because they're the ones that have to produce the goods, not me.

Rowdy, i love you like a brother but this team really needs to start walking the walk in 2013\. If we're reading these articles come round 15 or 16 you know we're in trouble

You have to give us a chance still it was only a trail and were under a new coach we might take a couple of rounds before we click but im sure we will be in the 8 were to good of a team not to.

I agree with this, plus what is Chris supposed to say? "We just arent good enough." doesnt put any hope into their fanbase. They have to be positive when it counts.

Blind passion. We're no better team this yr than we were last yr and where did we finish? Still have no established fb or hb either

That's an early call. Not sure I would agree - yet. Happy to wait for a month or two before forming an opinion on this.

Which part?

We don't have enough front row grunt or back row aggression to trouble the top sides.
Plus we have moltzen.
7 to 13th I reckon rowdy.

I think Moltzen might have a good year - however i agree with your other point - we just don't have the forward power to trouble the top sides - i'm thinking we will finish closer to 13 than 7.
