Leave Lui Alone

Unsure if this has already been posted, but just in case anyone missed it, it's from the latest issue of Rugby League Week. It's a little late, but still an interesting article nonetheless, good to see the coach giving Rob Lui a vote of confidence after a pretty strong last few weeks.

**LEAVE LUI ALONE**
**Tigers dig in for the fight as Cowboys circle the wagon**
_Tony Adams; Rugby League Week, August 24 2011_

Keep away from our Halfback!
That's the clear warning from the rampaging Wests Tigers as they look to keep Robert Lui and Benji Marshall together in the halves for years to come. A driving force behind the Tigers' six-game winning run, Lui is under contract until the end of next season but has been linked to a return to his home town of Townsville - and the Cowboys - in 2012.

"They are kidding if they think we are going to let him go," coach Tim Sheens fires.
"Robert is a starting NRL halfback. Players like that don't grow on trees.
"We've invested a lot of time and effort into him - why would we just let him walk out?
"He and Benji have worked up a great understanding over the last couple of years and we see him having a future here."
\
\
The Tigers have two rising halfback stars in Jacob Miller and Curtis Sironen in their ranks but both are seen as unready for the NRL is terms of experience. _RLW_ believes Lui, who has struggled with Sydney life off the field, may head to North Queensland when his contract expires at the end of 2012 - at which stage Sironen and Miller may be ready for the step up. The Tigers had finally restored stability following the much-publicised internal problems over the departures of Bryce Gibbs, Tim Moltzen and Andrew Fifita, so they were furious at the timing of the Lui rumour.

"We don't need this kind of speculation about our players in the media." Sheens says.
"The finals are just around the corner and constant rumour and innuendo can be unsettling."

Sheens and his staff see Lui as a crucial player in their title bid because of his ability to take the heat off Marshall in attack.
"Robert is going well but he needs to stand up more in the big games to take the pressure off Benji," Sheens says.
\
\
With games to come against the lowly Titans and Sharks, the Tigers have set their sights on top-four finish - a goal that seemed well beyond them when they slumped to eighth after 12 rounds. Fullback Tim Moltzen, after a slow start to the year following a knee reconstruction, has come good and produced his best game of the year against the Eels last Sunday.

"I must admit I was bit blasé about the injury when I first came back ... I didn't think it would be a problem," Moltzen admits.
"But I was a bit all over the shop.
"I feel my confidence is back now and I'm back to where I should be."
\
\
One of the few negatives to come out of last Sunday's win was a freak injury to prop Bryce Gibbs, who had his knee sliced open by a sprinkler head when he went in to make a tackle. Gibbs was forced from the field with the injury late in the match and wound required a dozen stitches. A member of the 2005 premiership side, Gibbs is hoping to play against the Gold Coast but may be told to sit out at least a week.

"I can't believe my luck," Gibbs says. "I did the same thing at the same ground a couple of years ago ... and it was actually worse that time."

Sheens says the location of the injury may force Gibbs to take a break.
"The stitches on the knee could burst open if he runs on it before it can heal, so he might have to have a break," the coach says.

Well lets see. People have been singing Moltzens praises for the last game or so and also Lui.

IMO both have been average all year - so lets not get too excited about Lui just yet -we all know that Moltzen is moving on - if Lui does so be it.

lui needs to take more responsibility - lui has to step up. the time has come. benji cant do everything. we need some new ideas at times throughout the course of a match. no really - lui has to step up, sironen and miller are banging on the door.

Lui will be one of QLD's best 5/8's or halfbacks this time next year. As the Fonz said, they have invested ALOT of time and money into him. They won't be letting him go. He is getting better and better.

I will even say he has been the Fonz's best project yet.

He will be a gun in a couple of years.

You watch.

I would hazard a guess that the QLD team next year will be;

7\. Cronk
6\. Thurston
\
\
With Lui the next one in line.

P.S. Jacob Miller needs to model his game on the Evans/Foran mould from Manly. He reaks talent but is a long way off Lui's level.

As for Little Siro, plenty of good judges on here like him but I know for a fact that the Fonz ain't sold on him just yet. The Fonz wants a Luke Lewis lock clone and had penciled Ayshford in for that transition, but his body has not increased in size like they had hoped.

Don't be surprised if Little Siro is crafted into the Luke Lewis clone that the Fonz is looking for.

When Gibbsy cut his knee a few years ago in the same way, didn't his recovery drag out because of infection?

If that is right, I hope it isn't the same this time….. We need him.

My philsophy is simple if a player doesnt want to be at the club then let them go, would rather players whom want to be at the club any day as long as the club does the right thing as well

I think players will be allowed to develop into the player they are and will be in future….not other players

Sounds like a Chris Crocker video - Leave Rob Lui alone!

Seriously though its good to hear Tim come out and show he wants Lui to stay, as others have said if we want to find out how important it is for him to return to QLD we will find out soon enough when we start talking 2013 contract.

If he does go back we should have a no homesick QLD halfback policy!!

what games have you been watching? lui HAS stepped up, he HAS taken some control and more importantly he HAS taken pressure off benji, which is alot of the reason why we are doing so well right now..

Go read benjis article in the SMH - he heaps prais on both the robs for stepping up in the past few months and both lifting their games. Judging by what benji is saying it appears lui has already been stepping up.

If we had to chose tomorrow, yes Evans would get the nod, but I dont think so in the long term. Evans & Sandow wouldnt complement what is currently going on in the Queensland game, whereas Robert Lui has more strings in his bow and a greater ability to straighten the play. Give him 2 more years at his current development, he will go close!

Mate we will have agree to disagree on this one Daly Cherry Evans will complement Thurston perfectly in the future
And defensively the game is different If you can't hold your own you are dead meat It is very hard to protect or hide people in a defensive line due to the speed and intensity of the game You have to be able to make 1 on 1 tackles as one miss and its game over

I like what I'm seeing in Evans… Reminds me alot like Allan Langer. I more see Lui in the long term at 6 for Queensland, with Cronk inside of him.
