Unbelievable news again…hope its an overstated threat.

Cairns is my home town, I've been on the phone all day. People up there are pretty tough and semi used to it but it's scarey as hell all the same.

i cant believe people are staying. they say "we have nowhere to go". how about SOUTH. its not like they werent given an early enough warning :brick:

I hope everyone finds appropriate refuge up there and stays safe and uses commonsense.

Were all thinking of you.

This sucks.

My mother lives on Magnetic Island - which is approx 5kms off townsville. she's currently bunkered down at her sisters place, which is on higher ground, and we have been in contact via sms. Very shaken up, however putting on a brave face. All the trees around the house are horizontal (this was at 7:30pm NSW time, let alone now) and the wind and rain is currently relentless.

this will probably keep up until the morning.

The underdog will be going to work tomorrow morning without any sleep, methinks…

i thought they were evacuating magnetic island?

doesnt mr sheens have property there too?

i just heard on sky news channel that there are waves 9 meters high off the coast of townsville

doesnt seem like it was as bad as they thought it was going to be. no one has died as far as they know. dodged a bullet there.

The dissapointment in the voices of the ambulance chasing media was evident this morning

x2… Someone should tell Karl & Kocjie Logie Nominations have Closed!!!

I was laughing my head off this morning when Channel Nine were broadcasting the Today show with an hour delay... Everything was dark in North Queensland, but funnily enough, the Sun was up an hour ago in South East Queensland

Koch is a peanut of the highest order.

His laugh runs through me & I hate his cult-esque attitude toward the sunrise viewer base.

He is the lovechild of Dilbert and Jim Jones.

magnetic island was indeed door-knocked and people were given the chance to evacuate, however the ferries had stopped, so it was to evac centres on the island, which were frankly very small.

mum and her sister spent the night huddled under the stairs and in the bathroom. kept in touch with them until 5:45am via text and spoke to them this morning approx Although they were very shaken, they are now safe and well. vegetation was absolutely shredded, with most trees uprooted, etc.. however the houses are all intact - at least in their immediate area.

Living in the suburbs of Mount Annan, I really couldn't comprehend what they would have gone through last night - and the kicker is, they didn't cop the full brunt of it, so I shudder to think what Innsvail (sp?) would have been like.

Glad to hear your mum and aunt are OK, underdog. It must have been a very scary time for everyone up there.

I know wasn't that disgraceful? They are only concerned with body counts. They're absolute pigs…Kosh is the worst but Karl is gaining ground at a rapid rate.

A man in Cardwell who was feared dead after going missing on his yacht during Cyclone Yasi has returned into port.

Fears about the man’s safety sparked after friends of his from Canada filed a missing persons report.

The man is believed to have witnessed the storm that devastated Port Hinchinbrook and Cardwell aboard his yacht.

Officials have said that the man sailed into port ‘shaken, but unharmed’.

Man found dead in cyclone aftermath

The first confirmed fatality of Cyclone Yasi is a man who asphyxiated on fumes spewed out by a generator he was using while sheltering from the devastating storm.

Queensland Premier Anna Bligh says the 23-year-old was overwhelmed by diesel fumes in a small room of a house in Bambaroo, near Ingham.

Authorities are still searching for a man near Port Hinchinbrook, while another reported missing in the Cardwell area has been found safe and well.

The category five storm destroyed homes and shredded crops as it roared ashore south of Innisfail on Wednesday night.

The State Government is coordinating the massive clean-up in the battered far north, focusing on Cardwell, Tully and Mission Beach.

Power is still out to more than 150,000 properties and constant rain and piles of debris are making the roads inaccessible and dangerous.

This morning police said initial assessments showed 20 homes had been destroyed by the cyclone and another 400 had suffered moderate to significant damage.

Assessment teams will continue to assess hard-to-reach communities like Lucinda, Halifax and Forest Beach by air.

Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts says everything is being done to restore essential services to ravaged communities.

"Restoring these services will be a key focus [today]," he said.

But flooding at Ingham has delayed the arrival of soldiers in areas north of Ayr.

The Bruce Highway is cut at Ingham and so far only a small contingent of troops has been able to get to the hard-hit town of Tully.

Police are concerned more rain could cut the highway north of Tully, further delaying the recovery effort.

Fire and police crews are still trying to get to isolated communities to ensure the safety of residents.

Looting

Police say six people are in custody in Townsville over alleged incidents of looting. Three had been charged.

The Bureau of Meteorology's Peter Otto says almost 300mm of rain has fallen in Cairns since yesterday morning and there are flash flooding warnings throughout the area hit by the cyclone.

"The flash flooding warnings are more in the area between about Mosman which is just north of Cairns and down to around about the Townsville area," he said.

Ms Bligh has issued a warning about the use of generators in areas which have suffered power cuts.

"The coroner wanted me to make people understand that if you are using a generator for power, doing it in a closed room without any ventilation means you are at risk from asphyxiation from diesel fumes," she said. "This is a dangerous thing to do."

Cassowary Coast councillor Mark Nolan says food is low, water is a concern and phone reception is poor.

He says there are still more than 7,000 people in evacuation centres across the region, with many people stuck in the shelters because they cannot get home.

"We're now looking at logistical issues like how we feed those people," he said.

"We had a call this morning for example, of people who took the early warning and evacuated to Townsville. Unfortunately we've now got major flooding at Ingham.

"These people are in panic mode - they want to return to see the damage and they physically can't get home."

The water supply in Tully and Mission Beach is being restored this afternoon.

The council says water pressure may be low in some areas and staff are still working on mains and pipe repairs.

A ship with 2,750 tonnes of food is arriving in Townsille by sea today to resupply the cyclone-hit area.

One hundred and fifty extra police and 500 extra SES personnel are moving into affected areas and the Defence Force, Ergon Energy and Optus are all sending additional people.

By the weekend Ergon Energy says it expects to have 850 staff working in the area - more than three times the normal workforce in the region.
