Problem is we dont go up, and then start backtracking.

we used to play up and in.

Now we play DOWN and OUT !!!

(sorry i had to throw that one in for a laugh)

From Madges post game presser, it's wasn't a game plan to crawl up so slow.

He was ropeable.how slow they went up without any linespeed

He may of changed from up and in to up and slide.

But both still have the word 'up' in them.

It's on the players. Need a front row with mongrel to start.

The coaching manual we use lists ‘line speed’ as ‘reverse and loiter’.

They move up 3 meters and then crap themselves.

Even from the opening kick off they are struggling to get onside by the time the ball is played.
From there they treat ball runners like catching an egg… with soft hands and plenty of give.

Perfectly put

Yep, the struggling to get back on side so early every game is worrying. Don’t know if it’s fitness or just no will. The markers hardly make it into position on what seems like every play the ball.

Too much ball watching and not enough urgency I think.

Agree. The only way to defend is to be up as one and in their face. No point in Madge telling them to move up and slide. We slide like a drunk walking home from the pub at midnight.

Rabbitohs were offside on almost every tackle (which is disgraceful refereeing), while we sit there and wait for the attacker to come to us.

Crap defensive structure is why they kept backing off on the edges. Not sure why the middles didn't bother, Tamou is one of the few who tries to come up fast but that didn't last long either.

We've had the worst linespeed in the comp for a decade.

But why? Is it lack of fitness? Laziness? Poor gameplan? Or just having very poor players?

It's our biggest issue. Allowing opponents to make 60m every single set when they're conversely in our faces and cutting us to 25-30m a set.

It's embarrassing going to games and friends who knows nothing about the game ask why the Tigers stand still when defending when opponents are sprinting up into our faces when they're defending. And there's no answer to that question. We just stand still and let opposing teams attack us with momentum while we're standing still or back pedalling.

I don't see how Madge can survive this. We've been bad in defence for years but this is by far the worst we've ever been.

I agree ...but you need to be able to do it for 80 minutes ..or have an able back up ....in a lot of cases your 1st contact as a defender needs to be above reproach ......and lastly ....quite often your player who leads the line speed is actually targetted in defence ....as a tactic from the opposition ...look at what teams did to Harry Grant last season .....

Not a heap of real quality players in the comp that can do it week in week out ......

Whilst this is probably true, why didn’t we do it then?

The reason that our markers often aren’t in place is that we lose the collision and ruck most of the time. This comes from a lack of effort and aggression in the tackle. Our defenders are often still getting up off the ground when the opposition are playing the ball.
When this happens repeatedly we are backpedaling and the opposition gain momentum which becomes difficult to stop.
Same occurs in Attack and this leads to trying to kick from within our own half, often with a rushed kick due to simple kick pressure being applied.
In its most basic format “tackle hard and run hard” are essential elements of the game, and we do neither!

Our players need 3 - 4 in a tackle to bring someone down n wrap up the ball. The best teams need 2-3 players n sometimes 1-2. What has happened with that??. Back in the day it was 1 player to make a tackle who put their body on the line and you could just mark up.

Probably because the leg tackle is as bad as a penalty or 6 again in the modern game .....
