He isnt wrong though. Being left exposed against 2 or 3 players isnt the fault of rhe winger. The issues are in the middle not on the edge. Mbye, Leilua and the prop and lock in the middle. They didnt do their job in the middle and by then it was all over didnt matter what the outside guys do. People who dont understand footy think because they score on the wing its the wingers fault. Thats not how defence works - you win in the middle. Fault for those trues lies with the inside men. Nofa was against 2-3 players what was he expected to do tackle all 3 at once
I believe it’s beyond our middle. Our middle players are just plugging gaps. It’s the guys on the blind side of the field that think their job is done because the ball isn’t going to come there way. If they were to push across even half a metre and stay alive we’d be a lot tighter on the edges.
Some players have this will to fight for every bone. Players like that would be pushing the middle further across and making it harder for the defence to find holes. We either don’t have those players or we don’t have the understanding of the structures across the line to identify how important presenting a solid line to the opposition is.
I’m not Nofo so I will call out one Lucy. I don’t think he is disinterested I just think he is not able to go the distance and tries to find little opportunities to take short cuts so that he can stay out longer.
This is the kind of methodology that Payten was implying with JT. Everyone sees what he does with the ball but no one asks how can a guy that is in the heavyweight class can stay out that long?
Btw Lucy is 114kg. That is not fit.
Payten was pointing out the short cuts he took in D when he became tired and how it looked from their best player to all the talented back rowers / forwards they have
The middle needs to cut the post contact metres and do everything in their power to get an attacker on his back ...on his side ...not facing straight on ......every millisecond they can save keeps your defence on the front foot
That starts all of our problems in D ....the post contact metres make our defence compress and then Brooks ,Garner , Roberts and LL ,Douehi and Mbye get isolated or stretched to the extremes ....then it just a simple case of an attacker getting on his opposites outside and then it curtains
