On our defence, when we get into our defensive shape we look OK - as we did for the first 30 minutes yesterday when we repelled them under enormous pressure. Where the dam wall breaks is when we can't get into shape. Their 9 gets through the markers, a forward gets a late offload, someone misses a tackle in the middle etc and they make a quick 30-40m.
Blokes like Tuki, Kelma, Mikaele and LL are OK if they're just going up and back but if they need to make up 30 metres our shape turns to mush. They struggle to get back, make poor decisions like rushing in (as it's the 'easy' option) then expose our edges. We lack the fitness and intensity of the better teams and our middle has been soft all year because of it. It's not helped by the young guys playing no reserve grades games and stepping up a level.
The guys with big engines, Twal, Stefano, Liddle and to a lesser extent Joffa, recover much better around the ruck.
The biggest problem is LL. He is so slow off the mark and struggles with lateral movement. Watch the last 3 games ..as soon as the dummy half sees him at A or B defender they take off and the momentum starts. Worse is he is not fast enough to provide the cover needed when teams shift , gets caught in the middle all the time and this puts so much pressure on the outside backs . Look at all the good teams their middle and edge back rowers are continuously sweeping behind the back to cover an overlap. We usually only have Brooks or Liddle and occasionally the fullback who put the effort in to cover.
