LOTE...Under the High Ball

While we should be practicing these more at training, I think the bigger problem hear is where our supporting defenders are.

We would possibly be the worst team to protect it's back 3 in the NRL from the high kicks…

Yep. Lawrence is going great but he is one of the worst blockers in the NRL.

Your sarcasm is too much sometimes Geo. :unamused:

Well…When you consider over half the tries scored against this season have been from kicks or plays just after we fumble a kick then you would want it to be addressed don't you think!!!!

Watto ...the 30mins the spend on Kick defusal at training is exactly the problem....Lets just say they don't really try to hard when contesting a bomb....Like someone is gunna take Lortay out....Nor do the blockers put much in either...

Showing on the field .........Time will tell.....

Lawrence used to be one of the worst defenders in the NRL and now he's great so hopefully as time passes…..

Lote, Brown and Ryan chalked up 6 errors between them last night, 2 each. Normally I don't worry so much when bombs go towards Lote, but he had an off night last night.

If Fitzhenry had have made any of those errors imagine the threads we'd have already!!!

no not really…i mean if fitzy offered what these guys do in attack then you can forgive them for an off night....with fitzy he makes error after error but offers nothing in ways of making it up.....you can almost guarentee lote will make 10 strong powerful runs get 1-2 line breaks maybe score a try as well as put in coming out of our own end....thats the difference mate

Thanks for explaining that Ron. We are all indebted to you for pointing out where we go ron… I mean wrong... Cause yeah Beau Ryan carved them up... Thanks again mate.

he has the potential too though along with brown….fitzy might have 3 line breaks in his last 30 games for us.....beau played better then fitzy did at fullback and better on wing as well

I guess the point I was trying to get across (and I'll leave it with this) is not that Fitzy is better than any of those other players mentioned (it's pretty clear on current form he's not), it's more the hysterical rants some people have had on the subjects. He's been average but hardly the complete disaster people make out and I was attempting to suggest that others apart from Fitzy are prone to basic errors. Sure they offer more in attack but in some cases it hardly justifies some of the dropped ball.

Anyone to sum again - not defending Fitzy just trying to draw attention to the over-reaction to his playing.

I don't know why you have more faith in Lote - I can't remember the last time he caught a contested bomb. The problem as I see it is the lousy job we do shielding our catchers. Every bomb seems to be a genuine contest or the other mob has more players around the ball. When other teams are defending it seems hard to get around the blockers to get to the ball.

After watching that effort surely they must be thinking enough is enough! For mine it should be every aspect of 'defending-the-bomb' training every day for the next two weeks!

You've got me convinced. No point having a great defence when you let in a try from a bomb every time they get in your 20m. Need to have Liam or Rhino to shoulder some chasers off the ball. I'd rather risk a penalty than concede tries all the time.

Yes, I hate to admit it Hybrid but it does seem to be a weakness in his game and in need of a fair bit of work. Chris is a favourite for sure but I'd hate to see him exposed for this by a smart kicking game in the semis… let alone Origin.

Well it is clear to me that something needs to be done and fast. I had the 'privelege' of sitting in line with our try line in the second half and our efforts at defending it under the high ball were cringe-worthy.

Defensive structure on the try line is a training/coach issue who ever that coach is..I see no reason why this has gone south as we had a good goal line defensive structure mid season. And lets face it trys of kicks should only be worth 2 points in my view percentage try and it is difficult to defend against.

From where I was sitting Lote looked like Robinson Caruso on the wing when Barrett kicked, he no support most of the time. BTW how good was Barrett's kicking something we could learn from.

Ummmm…..

Just make it kicks...

He was strange today. Didn't attack the ball and that 1st try he ended up over the sideline while the opposing centre scored in the corner.
