Lui assault case adjourned

THE assault case against former Wests Tigers and now North Queensland rugby league star Robert Lui has been adjourned until March 21.

Lui, who has pleaded not guilty to two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm on his partner, Taleah Rae Backo, appeared in Burwood Local Court today.

His solicitor, John Byrnes, sought the adjournment and it was granted by Registrar Brenda Ibbotson. The court also heard there would be an application for a variation of the AVO currently out against Lui.

The application will be heard in Burwood Local Court on Tuesday. Outside the court, Byrnes told the Herald the application was coming in the wake of ‘‘talk of a possible reconciliation’’ between Lui and his partner.

March 21 is a hearing date for the assault charges, and Byrnes said he anticipated the matter would be concluded on that day.

Lui signed for the Cowboys last month, after being released by the Tigers. He will now continue preparing for next season while awaiting his next court appearance.

Byrnes said Lui would not have to be in court when the application for variation to the AVO is heard. The NRL, which has a strong stance against violence against women, is closely monitoring the Lui case. A guilty verdict would obviously seriously threaten Lui’s football career.

Will be interesting to see how NQ handle this and whether they stand Lui down until the case is heard or thumb their nose at the NRL and have him running at 5/8 outside Thurston from game 1.

Anyways now we dont have anything to do with him lets move on.

Its a shame really as he was looking the goods and good halfbacks dont grow on trees but I must agree with you. Let's forget him.

As for his position at NQ: it wouldn't supprise me to see him at half and JT at 5/8

He's done nothing wrong while their employee…afawk....hardly think they'd sign him just to stand him down.
He'll play.
You'd think NQ must be somewhat confident he wont do a stretch

You're probably right Ink. Sounds like they will amend the AVO again just like last time, which looks to me that she'll stick by him and they'll have no case against him again.

The Cowgirls would definitely have done their homework before picking him up, especially since this is his second charge in as many years.

It's not really our concern anymore. If he does get off, I really hope for the sake of his missus and his child that he wakes up to himself, but I won't hold my breath.

im just glad his not a tiger any more, I could not cheer for anyone who made the admissions that Lui's has
