Lui assault case adjourned

THE assault case against former Wests Tigers and now North Queensland rugby league star Robert Lui has been adjourned until March 21.
Lui, who has pleaded not guilty to two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm on his partner, Taleah Rae Backo, appeared in Burwood Local Court today.
His solicitor, John Byrnes, sought the adjournment and it was granted by Registrar Brenda Ibbotson. The court also heard there would be an application for a variation of the AVO currently out against Lui.
The application will be heard in Burwood Local Court on Tuesday. Outside the court, Byrnes told the Herald the application was coming in the wake of ‘‘talk of a possible reconciliation’’ between Lui and his partner.
March 21 is a hearing date for the assault charges, and Byrnes said he anticipated the matter would be concluded on that day.
Lui signed for the Cowboys last month, after being released by the Tigers. He will now continue preparing for next season while awaiting his next court appearance.
Byrnes said Lui would not have to be in court when the application for variation to the AVO is heard. The NRL, which has a strong stance against violence against women, is closely monitoring the Lui case. A guilty verdict would obviously seriously threaten Lui’s football career.
