Lui wants to seal deal as Tigers No.7

Lui needs to "seal" the opposition when hes defending to even consider "sealing" a 1st grade spot.
He was a turnsyle in the few games in 1st grade he played last year..made Scott prince look like wayne Pearce!!
It was the lack of committment rather than lack of technique that bothered most

I am extremely confused by these comments and similar ones I have been reading. My recollection is that Lui defended well in first grade and actually surprised some people who thought his defense wasnt ready. I do recall that he defended atrociously in the 20's but I dont recall any such problem in firsts. He certainly defended very well in his debut and in the parra game so which game was he a "turnstyle". Or is this just one of things where it has been said so many times that people start believing it.

I thought his defense in the under twenties was awful......the attack sweet.

When he played first top flight he looked lost with the ball but tackled his arse off.

Agree Simon & ST… I found Lui to be a dead weight holding the pill but he was quite good in defense. If he improves his attack and maintains the solid and steady style of play that Moltzen introduced I would be happy with that :smiley:

Tigers also need to look at a halfback with a good kicking game,while farah is great out of dummy half,every team needs at least two players who can kick well,benji cant get the distance and has trouble with his accurracy,so who has the best kicking game out of Lui,moltzen and Taumata?This could be the key to who gets the number 7 job in 2010…

Good point….....Lui......although I havn't seen Taumata kick .....

Someone better tell Sheens though that Farah and Marshall are not the 1 and 2 kickers in general play......

clontarfkid......He was a turnstyle at times in the 20's ....but in FG he did a did alright with better defender's around him....In his first game Cronulla targeted him with Gallen and others running at him....he held his own,,,

There was a time when Marshall and as you point out Prince couldn't tackle ......

If Lui gets the job he will go alright IMO....

I think you hit the nail on the head re the players around him. It was something I had intended to include in my original post but forgot.

I am glad other people agreed that Lui held is own is firsts. I thought I was going crazy for a while.

I remember posting when he got picked that i didnt think his defense was up to it.

He defended most stoutly,but in attack seemed to crab across,without having the luxury of players cut lines insdie him looked completely lost.

Maybe the off season training plays with the boys will help that.

I seem to remember that Lui had gigantic boot on him in the 20s. I'd be more than happy to see him get a go and wish him the best of luck - as I do Moltz.

I was referring to his defense. I agree his attacking game was very quiet in the few games he played. However, I think that was a function of coming into a team that already had three go to men (Farah, Marshall and Moltz). That aspect of his game will only improve.

Lui missed 12 tackles in 3 FG matches. He did have a bit of traffic run at him, but like Lawrence did, I reckon he knows his defence is a weak point and would have worked hard on it during the off-season.

As for the kicking game, I thought last year it was miles better than in previous years both Marshall and Farah got some depth and of course Moltzen is said to have the biggest boot in the club,so with a years more experience he maybe able to get himself better positioned to use this talent

We don't though, all of the options are really five-eighths who will play in the #7, Moltzen aside.

I can't believe how quickly some have written Robert Lui off; he was a 19 year old half in his first 3 games ffs.

He's still only 19\. Plenty of time to mature and show he's up to first grade.

Thats exactly how i see it panning out now. Astute approach by Sheens. I'd hate to see him determined one way or another as he had seemed to have been with Morris and some other players in the past.

I have no doubt that Sheens has in the back of his head the option of giving Lui several games in 1st grade and then putting him back to the NYC where with only several NRL games could still take part in any NYC finals campaign. It would be very good for his development to get another taste of NRL and then hone his skills for another season in the NYC. Assuming he doesn't seal the deal in first grade.

i dont have faith in a marshall lui halves combo, to much potential for errors

I'll reserve judgement until I've seen how they perform together. If Lui performs disastrously in the trials then Sheens always has the option of moving Moltzen to 7 or giving Taumata a go. On the other hand if he performs well, and I hope he does, then the Tigers will have plenty of attacking options across the field.

I think thats the only way to look at it for now. All we can do is wait and see how each player performs and go from there. All the players concerned bring certain attributes to the team and Sheens will have a tough job finding the best balance.

Lui at half provides an outstanding long kicking game that could really grind sides away and set up many victories behind a strong pack.

Taumata has that attacking x-factor and with Benji basically still running the show from 6, Arana could be the perfect partner floating between first and 2nd reciever.

Moltzen has proven he do the job and picks the times he needs to take over well while mainly letting Robbie and Benji run the show. As a fullback, he's proven to be safe, good defender and a very dangerous attacker in general play. If he can improve his kick returns, then he's make an outstanding fullback.

Im happy for Sheens to start with Moltzen at 1 and Lui at 7 and see what happens.

compared that to Lockyer and Killmorley 6-7 miss tackles per game,there aint many great halfs that can tackle and these guys are in there 30s too Lui is 19 he can get better

on Lui attack i thought he looked better vs GC

Ive only seen Lui on TV in above ,was quite disappointed & have really struggled to understand what all the fuss is about….but seems that he was carrying injuries late in the season.
After all,he's only 18,so plenty of time to develop so prepared to see what happens in trials.
For what its worth,Tuquiri wont be wasted in a wing spot once he's aclimatized back to RL & will wear the no 1 jersey asap,& moltzen(who plays better close to the ruck picking off holes)will be in no 7..until inevitable injury time.
