Luke Brooks #167

Re watching the game.
I am 9 and a half minutes in and can provide the following.

We had our first attacking opportunity in Newcastle’s half at the 3min mark.
That set finished on the 2nd tackle with the left shift on a 4 on 3 play being knocked down by Gagai.
In that play if Brooks had cut out Papali and went to Nadden we would of gained more advantage.
Not an error, but a missed opportunity.

Next set scrum in the middle 20 out.
First tackle is a half break by Brooks stopped by an offside penalty.
We re pack the scrum.
Next set is interesting.
Left again from the scrum, same space on offer but Api dummy’s and goes himself, another missed opportunity though not to the fault of Brooks.
On the 2nd tackle Api shifts left to first receiver Douiehi with Brooks at 2nd reciever.
A full backline setup with 8 players left of the post agaisnt 5 defenders, Douiehi dummy’s and runs.
Another missed opportunity, not to the fault of Brooks.
Another forward play, and a 6 again from ruck interference.
Next forward play to Klemmer. Next is a no lock pass from Api to Steff who drops it short of the line.

Next opportunity in Newcastle’s half is at the 8 min mark off a Newcastle knock on about 20 out.
We go left to a forward. In the next play we have a backline set by Brooks 4 on 3 about 10m out. Api dummy’s towards brooks and plays another forward. Brooks comes in field resets again with 4 outside him and about 4 defenders on the line. He goes face ball to Ice who has a half hole and gets tackled around the legs 1m out after going halfway through the hole. Brooks then plays short to Offa who has a half gap to run through and gets tackled 1m out.
It’s now 5th tackle.
Brooks screams at Stef to get onto the open side to provide a decoy run and stef moves about 1m and stops.
Regardless, Brooks at 1st reciever fires the ball out to Doueihi who has a 4 on 3. Douiehi throws the most horrible short ball to Kepoa who just grabs it around his ankles. Talau is in the hole and would have scored had Douiehi cut out Kepoa.
Hand over to the Knights.

Just a small sample of Brooks involvement in the side and how he is unfairly tagged with the criticism for failing to make the most of opportunities in an attacking zone.

Ouch!!
The Half the majority wants us to buy (Took his team to a GF last year, Kicks Goals around 80%) Is now subject to the same garbage from internet geniuses as ours....

Funny old world....

Please for the love of god don't tell me that offer has been tabled. I know Wests management is amateur and the actual team is abysmal but I can not believe that even Pascoe, in all his inept glory would even considering extending Brooks.

It would not be Pascoe it would be coming from our coachs.Pascoe would just rubber stamp it unfortunately

The point is it doesn't matter who was the 'best' when it was one of the worst rugby league games ever witnessed (and we lost.)
Exactly why I would justify a blowtorch under Brook's bottom.

AD honestly seems to have form. Our backline is OK-ish to poor, but with Staines and Naden were a lot better then last year.

Brooks has good delivery and with Ice + Klemmer should have came up with the goods.

Blast I just realised. Sheens is getting the team to do 200 passes a day. He never mentioned catching the ball though?

Brilliant, but a shame that some can't see the forest for the trees.

Can you give us a play by play of all the wonderful plays he called in the 25 minutes or so they were down to 12 men and only one guy on the bench?

Never seen the Matty Johns Podcast but they had Madge on reviewing round 2 so I thought that would be interesting. Firstly, was interesting to see people actually analysing how teams play rather than usual dribble. Second, they had three interesting observations on Brooks:

1. They show him moving across field with no forwards running through, Cronk says if teams don't have forwards running lines it doesn't matter what you do. Our forwards generally shown flat footed huddled behind the play rather than running through creating options. This was a criticism of the team.

2. They talked about how the best halves work hard through the week on targeting players and also how they wear players down in a game and then attack them. Madge talked about how Smith and Cronk did this so well. No mention of Brooks. They also said halfback should direct team so that forwards know where to run in the context of the Tigers failure to create overlaps against 12 men. Madge story of how Cameron Smith used to do this. This was implied criticism of Brooks.

3. They said players don't watch footy like they used to. Talked about players of the past like John Sutton and the Storm halves who knew every positions and where people should be. They praised Hastings a lot for this and his attitude at training and the fact he's a footy head. Seems implied criticism of Brooks there given they were discussing the game and the two teams and the role of halfback.

Nothing fans here haven't spoken about, but interesting to hear Madge, Cronk and Johns suggest similar things.

Yes saw the show as well.

I thought he was implying those things of Luke as well.
