Luke Brooks has looked absolute money in this trial against Manly. Kicking goals too.

Running and passing game looked good, kicking game also looked ok.

I thought his kicking game today was the worst part of an overall good performance. It may be confirmation bias on my part but a couple of kicks I noticed didn't put the opposition under any pressure.

Was it Brooks who put the kick in for Roberts TRY

Threaded the needle
Lucky the jet had his afterburners on
Good grubber though !

That was the brooks I know. Just do that consistently please

I hope he stays fit mate, behind this front row he might actually live up to some of the lofty heights people have expected from day 1.

I just think there's something wrong with the way we talk about success. You see the Roosters and Robinson and Cam Smith and Bellamy all talking about their execution and focusing on consistency and refining their game or making less errors, and we're always talking about the finals and making the finals and how this year we really have to step up and all of that. One is talking about details and things that can be controlled, the other talking about fluff. I'm sure sports psychologists would find a problem with that. Stop talking about the finals, which is 26 rounds away, and start talking about round 1, talk about playing properly, building a team. All this 'Benji's gone and I can play now' rubbish is a little embarrassing for an experienced NRL halfback. He just sounds pretty soft and immature to be honest, and I've always liked him.

Yep, got to narrow their focus to one week at a time. We’ve had psychological issues for years in terms of inconsistency in performance. Cant back up wins with another win. Listen to Sean McVay head coach of LA Rams, in four years he’s never once mentioned anything other than getting the next win.

Looks leaner and fit ,I am a huge critic and not a fan but with a decent forward pack and some speed added this is his last chance to shine . There are certainly no more chances or excuses...I wish him well and that he finally realises his potential and steers the team to breaking the finals drought !

I think Brooksy May just be the most misunderstood player in the nrl. He’s just trying to fit in, does whatever is asked of him by coaches and senior players.
Run the ball more? Sure, no problem.
Give Garner a short ball off your left ? Done.
Play second fiddle to Benji, why not.
Get rid of the short kicking game? Ok.
Bring back the short kicking game? Ok.
Now kick some goals please? Alright, anything else?
He’s a team player, just been trying to fit in. Maybe this is the season that the coaching staff and players should do the fitting in?

I think finally the keys have been given to him, they’ve said play either side of the ruck and control the team . We live and die on your play . I’m confident , that the guy we saw on the weekend is the guy we will see until September. Hopefully that means they are playing footy instead of at Bali during that month .

Michael Maguire is on record somewhere saying that Brooks is one of the best halves he has worked with. I imagine it is because he is good at executing his game plan. It's more that the other drongos in the team didn't know what they were doing or would stray from the plan.

YES, just let him have some freedom, they kill players today with to much structure.

If we had BJ on that side, the ball would have gone dead 4 secs before he got there and we'd be complaining about poor Brooks kick.

If he stays fit he’ll be right up there on the awards nights. Blokes would be waxing lyrical if he did some of what what he’s done for us in a Roosters jersey. Misunderstood yes. Underrated yes. Finally has some go forward, abso-bloody-lutely

Brooks aims to be master of deception for defenders after 2020 woes

Wests Tigers playmaker Luke Brooks says he has mentally overcome last season's rollercoaster campaign, which included the 26-year-old being benched for the first time in his NRL career.

Brooks was among the side's best in their 52-18 trial win over the Sea Eagles in a sign the maligned halfback had taken Michael Maguire's advice to offer "more" leading into the 2021 season.

After being crowned the Dally M halfback of the year in 2019, Brooks noticeably took a backseat to Benji Marshall last year, who led the side in try assists with 17.

In comparison, Brooks finished with just three assists from 17 appearances.

With Marshall off to the Rabbitohs, Brooks has little choice but to step up in a season where few outside the club are expecting the Tigers to break their decade-long finals drought.

And in another sign he's ready to take on extra work, Brooks showed he was more than capable with the boot, slotting five goals from six attempts in a career first.

"Taking responsibility comes with the role," Brooks told NRL.com.

"The way we're going to play is having that traditional halfback and not having it split left and right.

"I think that's when I play my best footy. I've looked at deception stuff and playing around the ball … coming up with ways to trying to outsmart the defence.

"There's a lot of video that goes into the game now so every game is switched on.

"You've got to find ways to score points."

Being more unpredictable hasn't always been at the forefront of his mind during his 148-game career but he believes there is no greater time to test the waters.

Brooks has been a mainstay in the club's spine for seven seasons but has watched on as those around him have either shuffled around positions or departed the club.

It's the same proposition in 2021 with the exits of Marshall and Harry Grant leaving Brooks to adjust to a new combination alongside the likes of Adam Doueihi, Jacob Liddle and Daine Laurie.

"I'm in a good spot [mentally] and quietly confident that we can get to where we'd like to, and that's playing finals footy and competing for the title," Brooks said.

"We've bought really well with some big, experienced forwards and then someone like Stefano who will change the way we play around the middle.

"You look at someone like James Roberts when at his best is close to unstoppable. If we can get him to that spot, then we'll be happy with that."

With Doueihi out in round one through suspension, Brooks said he hoped former Knights junior Jock Madden would be handed a debut against the Raiders in Canberra.

"I think he's been outstanding all pre-season," Brooks said.

"He does all the little things right. Hopefully he can get a crack."
