Madge Maguire - Mega Thread

Well glad that is over with and that he's staying at this stage. Really glad though that the Tigers got to stick it to the media somewhat who had nothing but rumours to drag us through the mud with.

I don't really get the celebration or the sorrow.
As stated a couple of weeks ago Sheens will be the head honcho supervising the figurehead coach Maguire.
Nothing's changed.
Trust in head coach Sheens.
Congratulations to assistant coach Maguire for swallowing his pride and accepting his demotion.

Pretty experienced coaching setup. Does the head coach take the fall next time or does Maguire get elevated back into that position in enough time to be made the scapegoat.

I am not entirely convinced that Madge hasn't just been given a stay of execution. If we aren't better than 50% after Round 5 next year he'll be gone.

So just sack him now ?! God this is so brainless it’s infuriating. We’re not going to be able to sign any players for 2022 let alone 2023 when we can’t guarantee the coaches safety

Im still 50/50 on Madge - however I hope two things (among many others) that come to pass is that the apparent leaker on the Board needs to be identified and terminated - and any players who aren't committed to the coach and club or are white anters need to be dealt with accordingly. All in.....

Well i didnt see that coming, i still think this is only a stay of execution. The board, Pascoe & Hartigan all need serious looking into they are a joke.
I hope Madge goes on next year and is successful i honestly do but i can see that slide continuing if im being honest.

Yea u would say that caz, u got it wrong

I won’t be wrong when he’s sacked at some point next season. All this is postponing a clear execution.

If you think will do any better you’ve got rocks in the head

No coach has that luxury of tenure, but let’s see who we are playing in the 5 rounds, to make that call, didn’t we play 4 of the best sides in the first 7 rounds this season? I think those and the 4 after the SOO put us behind the 8 ball?

Maguire is not the reason for players not coming here. The problem is much higher up in the organisation. You’ve just witness the debacle that is the Board. Therein lies the problem.

I'm glad that Madge is staying, but don't want to gloat about it as I understand people's frustrations, especially with a game like that Bulldogs one. Hopefully with Sheens around the place and maybe some new assistants we can all get the results we want.

Shout out to the Pom for being on the money.

Now lets focus on a few new signings to share the burden with my man Hastings.

The fish rots from the head down...... poor leadership from the Board oozes thoughout an organisation... fact.

In all seriousness The board made their decision, since they are not sacking him they have to let him see out the year next year or close to it , no matter what the results as it will just be another Jason Taylor scenario that he got sacked 3 rounds in season as the team will be worse off if he is punted early in the season and the club looks even worse

I can live with that.

They need to get the assistants right and they need to start shopping Luke Brooks immediately.

We are actually really short in the halves already

Agreed. Unless the club can be guaranteed a better option at 7 in return Brooks highly unlikely to get moved on now, especially with AD our for a bit.

Hastings?

And 5/8th?

We have an off season to sort that out.

No we don't, we need another backup half already.

Peaches!

I don't want to go into the season with a Hastings/ Peachey halves pairing.

Thanks Mrs Brooks

Really? Show me one occasion of me supporting Brooks?

Not actually a new process for old time Wests Magpies fans - there were several coaches in the 1980s:

Roy Masters 80 (semis)-81
Terry Fearnley 82 (semis)
Len Stacker 83 (last)
Ken Gentle 84 (last)-85
Steve Ghosn 86-87 (last)
Laurie Freier/John Bailey 88 (last)
John Bailey 89

Inside story: Why Maguire was spared the axe at the Wests Tigers
By Michael Chammas and Adrian Proszenko
Updated September 21, 2021 — 3.02pmf

Michael Maguire fronted the club’s football committee on Monday facing an uphill battle to keep his job.

A board meeting had already been set up for 4pm to determine his future, with indications from within the club suggesting Maguire was a dead man walking.

In the meeting, Maguire agreed to a range of provisions around the structure and operation of the football department in 2022, including the implementation of Tim Sheens in a coaching director role.

One of the other concerns that was raised, which was raised in the findings of the internal review, was a separation between the club and the football department.

Maguire was told there would need to be greater engagement between the club and football department, but also was made aware of the club’s desire to have a greater say in the people he surrounds himself with.

At the end of the meeting, the element of the board that wanted Maguire to continue were reluctant to meet for the scheduled board meeting. It was subsequently cancelled, giving the club the night to think about the future of the club.

Privately it believed that even if it decided to move on, the man they wanted as a replacement - Penrith assistant Cameron Ciraldo - was unlikely to take the job at such late notice given his commitment to the Panthers and their quest for a premiership.

This morning the football committee reconvened. The decision, which had swayed multiple times since the club’s final round humiliation at the hands of Canterbury, had to be made.

Ultimately it was decided that it was in the best interest of the club to back Maguire, at least for another year, despite obvious concerns from people in positions of power to start fresh.

“Yesterday there was a football committee meeting and the concerns that were raised by the football review were brought to Michael’s attention,” chairman Lee Hagipantelis told the Herald on Tuesday afternoon.

Michael responded to them in a genuine and sincere manner, and the football committee was very impressed. There’s no questioning of Michael’s passion, commitment and dedication to the club. It was simply a process we had to go through. The board meeting that was convened yesterday was only convened if required.

“It was determined it was not required, and we wished to deliberate further, which we did this morning. The determination was was made to affirm Michael’s employment. We immediately relayed the news to Michael who was humbled by the show of faith in him by the club.”

Maguire has for now been spared the axe, with the coach to remain in charge of the Wests Tigers after surviving the club’s controversial review.

Maguire is under contract for the next two seasons, but there was speculation he was to be sacked for the club’s underwhelming 13th-placed finish. However, the club has confirmed he will remain in charge of the joint-venture outfit.

While we always understood this review and process would take time, it was the responsibility of the football committee to ensure all information was considered to make the right decisions for the club moving forward,” Tigers CEO Justin Pascoe said in a statement.

“Michael has been with the club over arguably its most challenging time with the COVID-19 pandemic, has overseen significant change both on and off the field throughout his tenure and, on behalf of all at Wests Tigers, I’d like to thank him for his effort so far.

“We are firmly committed to building a high performing club. With our strong financial position, increased investment and recent success of our pathways teams, the new Centre of Excellence and continued work on a South West academy, the arrival of Tim Sheens and his experience in NRL systems, this club is posed to reap the rewards of several years of hard work.

“We believe that through Michael’s vast experience and by continuing to challenge the way we operate, we will continue drive the high standards and behaviours needed to ensure we achieve our goals as a club.”

So pretty much a long winded version of what @the_pom told us last week.

Well we might as well get on with it, understanding the frustration from some but getting knickers in a knot won't change the decision. I'm okay with it though.
Positives are that any new coach coming in would have been on a hiding to nothing, ao we won't have to live through that (yet). And yes Madge will be under pressure but with new assistance and some Sheenius who knows, maybe he goes alright.
And the pressure will certainly be on some under-performers to deliver or move on!

So Sheens is head coach and Maguire swallowed his pride to be Tim's assistant coach.
Very good for everyone.

This is the worst possible outcome.. Maguire is now just a figure head ,he has no say on his assistants no say on recruitment and he will clash with Sheens on how the team plays .
Those that think this is a good outcome well after following this game for over 6 decades and seen over that period how boards at clubs react to these situations 2022 is going to be very volatile in deed .
Maguire is a coach as from today under immense pressure to succeed with all the control in hands of others .. I do feel sorry for him !

A realistic baby step next year would be an improvement on this year’s ladder position, and seeing the younger players continue to develop. Keys to that will be what recruits we can bring in with the $1.6-2M salary cap reportedly still available for next year, and improvement to our defensive structures, and a turnaround to our resilience to not get blown out so easily.

New assistant coaches are probably a must if Madge stays. Definitely need some new blood there who can engage with the players and bring modern systems and playing style to the club. I want to see green shoots in the first half of next year.

It’s not about you, it’s about the club. The decision has been made, you need to move on from it.

What baffles me is how are we going to improve next year as it is the only thing that will save Madge; otherwise the WT's are just prolonging the inevitable.
If recruitment is a Madge issue, how and who are we going to recruit?
Peachey, Elliott, Scott and Sims are our best bets at the moment but hardly being chased by other teams due to age or off-field indiscretions.
