Madge Maguire - Mega Thread

Been glued to this thread for 24hrs and look away then wow…not sure what to think after the buildup.

Just so we are all clear though - the "build up" is 100% media driven and not driven by Wests Tigers. Tigers didn't officially announce the review, it was leaked to the media. It's normal to review operations after a badly failed season, and naturally for the 3-year coach, his ongoing involvement would be part of that review.

However 100% of the content between the public becoming aware of the review, and the outcome of the review, is pure media-driven circus of speculation, with a significant number of commentators and typically none of them got the story right.

When we all take a step back from the hysteria, the club conducted an internal review, the Board were made recommendations and their ultimate decision was to retain Madge. It would not be weird for some of the Board members to have been in favour of sacking Madge - same as some fans were. The players don't even come back to training for 6 weeks, there's no time lost.

Over past month or so, the media carried out numerous reports, Maguire was only hours away from sack. Quoting “reliable sources”, people “within club” All delivered as FACT. Yet here we are, Maguire retains his job. Who apologises, compensates Michael or the club, for inaccuracies & stress?

*One of the other concerns that was raised, which stemmed from the findings of the club’s internal post-season review, was a separation between the club and the football department.*

I guess this goes some way to explaining why we're in such a mess.

Madge worked under a known psycho CEO at Souths and won a premiership.

Then there's us.....

Another total embarrassment for the club..tiger tales 2.0
**We either didnt have the $$$ to pay out Madge(thanks Lee),or didnt have the replacement lined up(thanks Board).Amateur hour**
And when was the last time a club make a media announcement that they decided to keep the coach..?
We can write off 2022..no new players from the NRL....it will be same team that tanked 38/nil to the wooden spooners and finished 13th..which we wld kill for next year
The only silver lining is perennial overpaid underperformers mite be more amenable to moving on during the offseason rather than face another year of Madges #$#@! motivation speeches!!
Hope some of the Board goes with them..
So looking fwd to 2022

OR, they wanted to keep Madge? TBF to the board, they never said they were going to get rid of him, did they?

Following the thorough annual review of club’s football operations, Wests Tigers have confirmed that Michael Maguire will remain in his position as Head Coach.

In addition, the club has also confirmed several structural and procedural changes will take effect within the football department. These changes have the sole aim of ensuring the club continues to challenge itself in the way it operates in order to become a better performing organisation.

Wests Tigers CEO Justin Pascoe said: “While we always understood this review and process would take time, it was the responsibility of the football committee to ensure all information was considered to make the right decisions for the club moving forward.

“Michael has been with the club over arguably its most challenging time with the COVID-19 pandemic, has overseen significant change both on and off the field throughout his tenure and, on behalf of all at Wests Tigers, I’d like to thank him for his effort so far.

“We are firmly committed to building a high performing club. With our strong financial position, increased investment and recent success of our pathways teams, the new Centre of Excellence and continued work on a South West academy, the arrival of Tim Sheens and his experience in NRL systems, this club is posed to reap the rewards of several years of hard work.

“We believe that through Michael’s vast experience and by continuing to challenge the way we operate, we will continue drive the high standards and behaviours needed to ensure we achieve our goals as a club.”

Wests Tigers players and coaching staff will return for pre-season training in November.

How were the clowns Hooper & Buzz last night on Fox? They make up cr@p about Maguire getting sacked, actually write articles for the paper the next day, & when it doesnt happen try to make out the WT are blame! Last time I looked , neither of those toolbags are on the board. Who the hell do they think they are to dictate to the WT board what to do or not do! Hopper & Buzz , I'll tell you whats a shambles is supposed NRL reporters who make up dribble & expose themselves as the fools they are.The only thing left to do for you two is to make goose noises & your life will be complete.

Inside story: Why Maguire was spared the axe at the Wests Tigers
By Michael Chammas and Adrian Proszenko
Updated September 21, 2021 — 3.02pmf

So this is the official story from the club, including direct quotes. Funny how Chammas went off half-cocked during the week as well, but the club has decided to give him and Proshenks the post-Member scoop.

I don't really get the celebration or the sorrow.
As stated a couple of weeks ago Sheens will be the head honcho supervising the figurehead coach Maguire.
Nothing's changed.
Trust in head coach Sheens.
Congratulations to assistant coach Maguire for swallowing his pride and accepting his demotion.

Come on Dwight you’ve disappointed me. He is not the Assistant Coach. He is Assistant to the Coach.

I am looking to see how the media spin this based on their earlier "inside info" that madge was gone, and the board was going to ratify this yesterday

I’m not sure if this has been posted but SEN are reporting the “emergency meeting” was a rat trap. Hope it was. That might be part of the structural change

Knew our club would keep him. Absolute joke. Can't wait to watch the golden duo Maguire and Brooks lead us to like 4 wins next year.

Why on earth are we keeping a lame duck coach? We're going to be in the exact same position next year, if not worse. Do we then decide to keep him after 4 straight years of missing the finals? Only we could keep a coach who progressively makes a team worse.

I am not entirely convinced that Madge hasn't just been given a stay of execution. If we aren't better than 50% after Round 5 next year he'll be gone.

So just sack him now ?! God this is so brainless it’s infuriating. We’re not going to be able to sign any players for 2022 let alone 2023 when we can’t guarantee the coaches safety

Maguire is not the reason for players not coming here. The problem is much higher up in the organisation. You’ve just witness the debacle that is the Board. Therein lies the problem.

If you boil everything down to actual facts and confirmed, the board has been very professional post season. They have done everything correctly post season.

I for one support keeping Madge at this stage, another coach change I believe isn’t the way to continue moving forward and will put as back even further.

However one thing that does concern me is how this is going to impact Madge’s decision making around the team. You could hear in his press conferences throughout the season, in between the ebbs and flows, that he seemed to be playing the long game and building over the coming years with youth.

Now that it appears his tenure may be short lived pending early season results, I wonder if he’s approach now will be for short term success at the expense of long term “real” change.

Same may be said for Hartigan and Pascoe, will be an interesting off season to see how it plays out.

Whatever happens I just hope for some stability in our team and to be competitive, WT22!!

This is a terrific outcome. In the spirit of healing as @pawsandclaws1 suggested, i will recommit my membership dollars for another year. Well done to other members who, I know, also contacted the Club and left them in no doubt about where we see the real issues of the Club reside and how it impacts on team performance.

While some of that can fairly be sheeted home to Maguire, I hope the review has also put others like CEO/Chair/Board that they are also on notice as to their role in how the Club improves its profile and perfomance.

I know I will continue to make my thoughts known to them.

Thanks TT. At first I was a little disappointed but after further consideration having to report to the Coaching Director, Tim Sheens, and having two handpicked assistant coaches not appointed by him is not dissimilar to walking away with a mild gelding. The sting in the tail.
