Wests Tigers regrets to announce the sad passing of the great Bill Keato, who died yesterday morning, aged 93.
Bill was the longest living Western Suburbs Magpies first grade player. The goal kicking fullback’s career with Western Suburbs spanned from 1938 to 1950 and included the Club’s third first grade premiership in 1948, when Wests defeated the Clive Churchill led South Sydney Rabbitohs side in 1948.
Following his retirement from playing Keato served as the Club's secretary and treasurer, commencing as treasurer in 1951\. His involvement with Wests lasted over four decades.
He was also a founding member of the Western Suburbs Leagues Club at Ashfield and was both a Life Member of the Leagues Club and Western Suburbs District Rugby League Football Club.
Keato was inducted into the Western Suburbs Magpies Hall of Fame in 2010.
Wests Magpies Chairman Mick Liubinskas said that Bill will be sorely missed by everyone within the Western Suburbs community.
“Our deepest condolences go out to the Keato Family. Bill was a Magpies man right through to the bone,” Liubinskas said.
“His tireless efforts as a player only matched his tremendous work and commitment as an administrator in having a significant role in establishing Wests Ashfield Leagues Club some 56 years ago to support our beloved Football Club.
“Up until now, Bill Keato had the privilege of being our Football Club's oldest living first grade player who played in our third Premiership victory back in 1948.
“Black and White ran through Bill's veins and his name, memory and legacy will undoubtedly live on"
Beloved husband of Nellie (deceased). Much loved father of Judith, Geoffrey, William and Kelvin. Dear father-in-law, grandfather and great-grandfather of their families.
The funeral for the late Bill Keato will be held at 12.00pm tomorrow (Wednesday 10 October) in the Magnolia Chapel of the Macquarie Park Cemetery & Crematorium – Delhi & Plessey Roads, North Ryde.
