Maguire pleased with adapting Wests Tigers

There was a new found maturity and trust for the whole team throughout the second half. The great hope is that they learn and continue on that theme throughout the season.I think they will.

It would be nice ......that 2nd half should be the basis of every performance

I thought that the Wade Graham-led Sharks forwards would be telling.
I was wrong - Graham tried, they did OK - but our boys showed guts.
!

Madge isn't getting enough credit for his bench rotation. Injecting Billy and Rowdy gave us the edge

Wests Tigers Head Coach Michael Maguire said he was most pleased with the way his side adapted throughout their Round 3 clash against Cronulla to eventually end up with the two points.

Having raced to an early 10-0 lead in their first game back, Wests Tigers found themselves trailing the hosts 16-10 late in the first half with Wade Graham and Josh Dugan causing all sorts of attacking problems on Cronulla's left edge.

However, off the back of a tight defensive effort in the second half to keep the Sharks at bay, Wests Tigers would run in in three unanswered tries to emerge with a strong 28-16 win that had plenty of reasons to impress Maguire.

“I’m really pleased with the players," Maguire said.

"We spoke at half-time about what was going on in the first half and they changed and adapted.

“They were able to build more patience in the second half to be able to capitalise and score a few tries. We obviously got off to a good start but then Cronulla were able to pinch a few tries and put more pressure on us.

"But in the second half they adapted well.”

**“It was our defence that changed most — we were getting beat on the edges. That is where the boys changed and adapted to what was thrown at them, and possession and completions play a big part in that,” Maguire added.**

“We probably put ourselves under a lot of pressure and allowed them to come in and put those plays on rather than controlling it through our completion rates. The edges sorted that out and then we were able to get a better field position which allowed us to put pressure back on Cronulla."

With a new spine of Adam Doueihi, Benji Marshall, Luke Brooks and Harry Grant all impressing in their first game together, Maguire said there were plenty of positive signs to come heading in to next week's trip to Suncorp Stadium.

“I’m pleased they’ve all played together," Maguire enthused.

"I have a new spine and that starts with Harry, Benji and Luke. Over the last two or three weeks we’ve been fortunate through the circumstances to be able to spend a bit of time on the combination between those boys.

“I could see it growing as the game was going on.

"It was great to have all our players available with Moses [Mbye] and Luke back and Adam is only going to get better with his time at fullback.”

Wests Tigers will look to make it back-to-back wins for the first time in 2020 when they take on the Gold Coast Titans next Sunday at Suncorp Stadium.

"We were getting beat on the edges"....we've been saying this for year after year. It shouldn't be happening so easily still.

The adaptation came in the middle field in defence when Mikaele and Aloiai came back on...as well as an improvement in kick/chase..including controlling possession..

For me they were so more patient in the 2nd half , and that was the difference

And Harry Grant , reckon I saw him take one bad option in his 60 odd minutes and that was just before he was replaced

Gee that makes a huge difference to your side , loved the way we played flat at the line as well without the 5 forward passes we regularly throw

Yeah..there was one play where his forward had over run Grant..Mikaele ..I think and instead of throwing the pass he held it up and hit the support runner..Twal...Any other hooker option we have would have thrown it forward IMO..smart play..

Yeah That stood out for me , plays with a maturity well beyond his years

Reminds me of his former captain ...I laughed when Benny Elias said he would play SOO in 2020

If he continues improving and Cammy says no .....who knows

I thought Grant was exceptional and a real talent, really makes a difference to our team and the combinations will only get better.

Not sure if it’s only me but it appeared that as he jumped out of dummy half with the ball to draw the marker and pass to a forward he was a little cramped up by the runner. I put it down to our forwards just not being used to his style and after a few games they’ll be a lot more in tune with each other.

Grant gave us direction and purpose .. he told the forwards where to be and where to run .. his service out of dummy half was exceptional. With his leadership from dummy half, it gave both Brooks and Benji time to do what they wanted to do. My only concern is that we have BJ Leilua out wide and he barely saw any ball any less he came and took a hit up .. with such a strike weapon out wide our backs need to see more early ball. Hopefully as this 2020 season rolls on, our back will become more involved out wide. Nofoaluma and Jennings both gave us some good meters in their hit ups. Doueihi is an odd one .. ?? haven't made my mind up on him yet .. everyone says he has talent and will could be a strike weapon for us .. i thought he was safe at best, did what he had to do at the back .. would like to see him get more involved in the backline once and when we spread it wide. Over all a solid game by all .. since we have lost the last 6 games against the Gummies it was really great to see all involved and everyone sticking in to the end.
