Manly Inclusive Pride jersey backlash

The real losers from this situation are the LGBTQ+ community, who, if they want to represent their community with pride, have to do it wearing a f&cking Manly jersey.

All in seriousness, good on Manly for trying to do something positive. Hopefully a whole of NRL pride round gets a run in the future. If teams know about it before the season commences some education can occur so it's not such a shock dropped on the playing group mid season.

Around 50% of NRL players are polynesian.

Every year the NRL celebrates the polynesian influence and culture within the game and currently polynesia is probably the greatest opportunity to grow the international game.

The NRL have done a good job of including "polynesian culture" and celebrating it and they welcome it, but the hard cold truth is what is happening at Manly IS polynesian culture. Anyone who really knows and understands real polynesian culture knows the role of religion and family in their culture. It is primary and not negotiable. It is also a particularly fundamental form of Christianity with particularly strict edicts on certain parts of the faith, and guess where this falls into?

So when the NRL, the clubs and fans "embrace" and "celebrate" polynesia culture, what are they celebrating? Just the sipi tau and haka? Floral garlands are OK? Some singing might be nice? Culture is what culture is and its not for others to cherry pick the best bits and say that is what it is. This IS polynesian culture.

I spend a lot of time in polynesia and working closely with polynesians, in POLYNESIA not western Sydney. Polynesian culture is a beautiful culture and genuinely worth celebrating, particularly its contribution to Rugby League, but you cant just embrace "bits" of it.

So then we get to what Manly is celebrating. Its all about inclusion, so that "ALL" know they are welcome and included. What does inclusion mean? Who are all? Is Polynesian culture included? Are those who adhere to it closely and fundamentally included?

Manly screwed the whole thing up by not including the players in the decision, but after that I think they have handled it as well as it can be.

That is a really good intelligent post. It's a really tough issue but it needs to be faced in an adult fashion.

My take is that we have to somehow change religious doctrine. I understand how tough that will be. My wife is Catholic. She is from the Philippines. My two oldest kids went to communion but there is no way they will grow up Catholic like my wife is now.

We have to be inclusive and allow time for change to happen and not be too harsh on people that have been indoctrinated with bigoted viewpoints. At the same time we have to push calmly and rationally to change Church doctrine.

I'll add that I also have extended family who are fundamentalist Muslims. They believe one of their children may be gay. I'm not sure that he is. He seems happy and well dressed and moderate. They sent him to a Madrasa in Lebanon when he was in his early teens in order to toughen him up. It didn't work. He hated it.

We've done this pretty well with women and Indigenous people and Asians etc. It just takes a lot of time.

I was surprised at how strongly these people feel about the gay community. It's pretty bad.

Grown ups acting like babyโ€™s. Get a life this is Australia , you donโ€™t like it go back to weโ€™re your beliefs appear acceptable.
I feel sorry for any young person that get affected by these so called role models.
Sorry , but in the Manly situations as we are all equals , the whole club collectively should hide itโ€™s head in shame

aaaaaand there it is. Dont have to scratch the surface too deeply Australia.

"This is Australia and if you dont like it go back to where you came from" SCREAMS tolerance and inclusion. It comes from the Cronulla school of tolerance and inclusion.

What do you do ?

I honestly don't know how to handle the situation. I believe everyone is equal. The problem I have is when people show bigoted viewpoints towards other people.

I'm also not stating you can force them to for instance wear a jersey.

It's not about forcing people.

Im not sure bigotry is the only reason for this. Its equally likely that these players are tolerant and accepting of LGBT people but do not want to publicly promote something that is against their culture.

The think I find confusing is that people are saying the players are being excluded when they chose to stand down. So if I decide against going to a work function does that mean I am being excluded even tho it was my choice?.

Manly barely have fans and now they've pushed away more with this.

I've seen some normy types posting that anti manly pro gain rainbow jersey mock up imagine.

More bad publicity.

I dont think the players were excluded. The players were certainly excluded from the discussion or the decision behind the jersey, which of course is the whole problem.
