Manly Sea Eagles tipped to make a $600k play for Woods

600K will be the norm for a Origin prop, taking into account salary cap increases. Money is not a problem.

Everyone complains about not having good enough forwards, especially props, and we have one whose a local junior and you want to start skimping to save enough cash to re-sign a NSW cup player rather than keep an Origin player?

If star halves are worth a million a year, surely star props getting paid 60% of that is not out of the question.

You people say you can't spend lot of money on a winger, a fullback, a prop. Just which position are you prepared to pay market rates to get a world class player?

The salary cap has gone up quite significantly so 600k might not be as much as you think.

600k in 2015 is equivalent to 400k in 2012.

I would say, make a play for him at 500k and see what happens. Communication with him is key.

Also, someone said he grew up following the Eagles? I thought he was a tiger through and through???

I started a thread about woods a few weeks ago regarding Manly being after him and he's apparently keen.

Yes he grew up in Leichhardt and played juniors for Leichhardt Wanders and Holy Cross (I think) but that doesn't mean you cant support another club..

If I live in Ryde had a kid and he/she went for Manly and wanted to play Junior Footy in the Manly Catchment area. I wouldnt drive to northern beaches two-three times a week for training and footy matches. They would play local where we live, I think thats what happined with Aaron while growing up!

Hope he doesn't leave!!!

A sense of deja vous for ex-Magpies like myself who have seen it all before.

The club simply cannot afford to let Woods go …....... he is our best forward and we produced him.
This will be a good test for Mayer and his team in the new year. If he can conjure a way to keep our top players in the wake of serious offers from other clubs then he will have my respect. I suspect other clubs will throw their hat in at some stage too.

he is worth more to us than to manly.

we dont really have too many rep players in our squad

it's a no brainer… tell woodsy to give the management a number.

Loyalty only gets you so far. Money only gets you so far. We might be in trouble here.

If your a top player, you want to be in a top team. At the minute, nobody REALLY trusts Wests Tigers managment to make the right decisions in recruitment, retention and coaching. I'm not saying that the current mob at WT are gonna screw things up even further, but your never sure of anything when it comes to WT and keeping players. I think this is on every players mind at WT atm.

I think its this lack of confidence that could be a danger when it comes to hanging on to our good players. In Woods' case… do you want to line up alongside the likes of Anasta, Bell and Thompson each week, or do you want to play in the Finals every season and line up alongside Watmough and the Stewart Brothers?

Take your Wests Tigers goggles off and think about it. If your like woods and making over 100m almost every game, if your tackle count is always high, but your team is getting smashed on the scoreboard more often than not then eventually your mind will start to wonder.

You can paint a picture many ways.

"do you want to line up alongside the likes of Anasta, Bell and Thompson each week"

anasta is leaving after this year, bell is already gone.

or you can say

"do you want to line up alongside the likes of Farab, Sironen, Simona and Brooks each week,

Like any player, the club has to determine a price they are willing to pay and if Manly or any other club is willing to pay more than so be it.

I would imagine the club will do everything it can to retain Woods, but I would imagine how we perform in the first half of the comp may also have some influence on what he decides to do.

Like Benji no one is indispensable, but Woods is nearly indispensable!!!!

agreed… I'm hoping we can turn our on-field fortunes around very quickly to ensure our good players don't start thinking about what if's.

You have summed it up pretty well there TIGERS. There is a lot of uncertainty around the Coaching staff and Management. If he doesn't like playing under Potter then he will leave and take a better offer.

There is no way that Manly can pay 600k for him without losing any top players. I wouldn't pay over 350k for him as we have Figuatiasa (sorry for spelling) and Brown coming through.

Dude , despite his lack of speed he played SOO last year

And you want to replace him with 2 unproven NYC players

Both have heaps of potential , but as we see with many NYC players they don't always crack it

This is the the EXACT reason why I would love to see the NRL adopt a policy where clubs who have nurtured their own juniors be allowed to pay whatever they want to keep those juniors in their club. I would also like to see the NRL reduce the salary cap to stop clubs like Manly and the Roosters spend ridiculous amount of money stealing players from other clubs.

Here's a tip for clubs like Manly and the Rooster…..Keep your 600K, spend it on your own juniors and develop your junior pool! Keep the game growing from the roots and watch how the top flourishes. This will also be a good way to keep kids from joining soccer, aussie rules and union!

This cap review should take the NRL in the right direction, although I'm not sold on a marquee system the rest of it sounds great.

I saw a comment saying buchanan was the next woods from about a year ago when we picked him up.

Same with Groat and many countless others.

We need to make a ~500k play at him, doubt manly are actually proposing 600k. Typical telcrap inflation of 20% GST.

If players truly did not like playing under potter, we wouldnt have seen improvement from many forwards, including Sue, Sironen, Blair and definitely not have seen the 100% committment from Woods like we did whenever he was fit. And we also probably would have seen him let go i reckon. Play discontent rumours were probably coming from Benji and co. which were then expanded upon by telecrap, as usual.

I hope he doesn't go, but if that money is right, then take it kid and go your hardest. Our team will live on and for every top grade player that moves on for over inflated money, there are ten waiting in the wings for their shot!

I don't begrudge anyone leaving for the dough, as long as they are honest and don't carry on about how they play for the love etc etc. I don't know how much it would take for me to wear a Manly jumper…I think I'd rather kiss ten men on the lips....with tongue!!

Or is this a case of the player manager throwing the idea out there to bump up the Wests Tigers offer prior to negotiations. That's just business!

Manly are an ageing roster also with the likes of DCE looking to link with the Broncos soon I personally think Woods will stick with us unless of course he wants the dollars.

The tigers are a club on the rise after going through a re building stage and sweeping out all the dead wood.

For me woods is not worth 600 but if Manly wants to pay him that then good luck to him I say.
