Mansour in two minds over NRL Contract

Josh Mansour says family is the biggest thing holding him back from accepting a lucrative NRL deal to join the Canberra Raiders.

Penrith's bulldozing winger has a lot on his plate at the moment, with his contract decision imminent and the prospect that he could also be in the frame for a shock State of Origin debut for NSW.

The 23-year-old is very close to his Sydney-based family and is in a seven-year relationship with girlfriend Daniella Toutounji.

He's also hesitant to leave the Panthers, who gave him his NRL debut back in 2012 and appear to be headed for a successful era under coach Ivan Cleary.

Weighing up whether to pack his bags and move to Canberra is causing Mansour plenty of headaches as he closes in on a decision he hopes to finalise within the next week.

Mansour knows how fickle first grade football can be, after he was shunted by the South Sydney Rabbitohs as a junior, and the massive money being offered by the Raiders doesn't come around every day for a winger.

Wests Tigers winger James Tedesco couldn't refuse Canberra's advances. However Melbourne's Kevin Proctor had a last minute change of heart and knocked back the Raiders to stay for less money at the Storm.

Mansour confirmed on Monday his choice is down to Canberra and the Panthers, and he's genuinely torn.

"Yeah, it's been a bit of a headache," he said.

"I've got to think of myself at the end of the day but I've been playing good footy here and this club has given me the opportunity to play first grade so hopefully I can make my decision in the next week or so and then I can concentrate on my footy.

"It's just very hard trying to deal with family stuff as well.

"I've got to focus on my future and do what's best for me. NRL careers are very short so I've got to think of myself sometimes."

Mansour admits he was nervous about what kind of reception he might get from Penrith fans at Sportingbet Stadium last week and was overwhelmed at the positive response.

Panthers supporters have even started up social media pages trying to rally support for the popular try-scoring specialist to stay at the foot of the mountains.

"I was actually really nervous before the game and to see all those fans meant a lot to me," he said.

"I'm proud to play for this club and in front of all the fans."

Sounds like he is wavering too….

To bad we aren't in the frame to sign him, we would be a good fit for him, still in sydney and could probably pay him more than panthers

I hope he stays with the panthers if we can't get him. He's a great player and I would hate to see his career go down the toilet.

Why isn't he in three minds? I thought I saw a thread recently where he was a dead set cert to sign with us. What happened? Did we blow another contract negotiation?? Heads will roll. Etc etc etc.

Would be interesting if every Canberra target bar Teddy knocks back the offer to stay with their current club. They're going nowhere fast.

1\. He is not a Panthers junior.
2\. They didn't stick by him through countless injuries.
3\. He owes them nothing, Tedesco got paid for the whole 2012 doing nothing.

yep apparently done deal with panthers if their forum is anything to go by and they are rapt. if so, great to hear for the panthers and for club loyalty. maybe the dollar is NOT all that matters ( or maybe its the thought of ricky stuart as coach ). one wonders what the single sign-on for the faiders is thinking now. maybe there is a get out clause for teddy now that the wheels have fallen off the faiders recruitment plans.

Four players go down to Canberra, get the VIP treatment for the day, told of the bright new order that is happening in the national capital and get to meet the great man, Sticky and have their egos massaged for a day.

They than all go home and have a long long think about their football future and only one players was swayed by the spin, the rest have decided to reject the pot of gold and the one who accepted the pot of gold did not do it for money, he said their were opportunities, Iam just wondering what these opportunities might be.

To me this is a bit like the Benji thing, he has been lead up the path by his management and may have big regrets

Maybe the other three just didn't want to play with teddy. He was the first to sign on, now the others have declined.
