A ROUND of golf with former teammate Benji Marshall helped Tigers fullback James Tedesco make the painful decision to leave his junior club and sign a three-year deal with Canberra.

Although Canberra’s $1.9 million offer was comfortably in excess of what the Tigers could afford to keep him, Tedesco was still undecided when he teed-up alongside senior stars Marshall, Tim Moltzen and Braith Anasta at St Michaels Golf Club on Monday.

“I had a good chat with them all, because they’ve all kind of been through it themselves,” Tedesco told The Daily Telegraph.

“They’ve also had a couple of injuries and learned that you’ve got to look after yourself when the chance comes around, because you never know how long your career will last.

“I really appreciated that advice.”

The 22-year-old’s dilemma turned nasty over the weekend, after it was revealed he and Panthers winger Josh Mansour toured Raiders HQ last Thursday.

Tedesco revealed that he was forced to de-activate social media notifications in the face of some confronting advice from Tigers fans.

“They wanted me to stay and they were disappointed when it looked like I might be leaving,” he said.

If only they knew the real story.

When Tedesco received his first offer from the Tigers a few months ago, something did not add up: his 2015 salary was less than his current contract value.

The Tigers hastily reconfigured the numbers, but Tedesco’s agent, Sam Ayoub, felt they still weren’t comparable for a player who was leading the Dally M votes at the time and had scored a try in each of his first four appearances.

Negotiations stalled, forcing Tedesco to test the market a few weeks ago.

Flush with cap space after Anthony Milford’s call to commit to Brisbane, Canberra needed a new fullback and had the means to pay handsomely for him.

In the end, it’s believed Tedesco stood to earn almost $200,000 a season more by joining Canberra.

“I understand it was hard for the Tigers and the negotiations went on for a while,” Tedesco said.

“It was disappointing that we couldn’t reach a position we were both happy with. My intention was stay at my junior club with my mates. It just didn’t get to where we wanted.”

In a welcome change for the Raiders, coaches Ricky Stuart and Dean Pay didn’t have to over-sell the ACT lifestyle to Tedesco, who lives in semi-rural Menangle, just a two hour trip up the Hume Hwy.

“People from Sydney always say Canberra is cold and boring, but I’m from Menangle, which is pretty quiet,” Tedesco said.

“I know a few of the boys like Paul Vaighan, Jack Wighton and Mitch Cornish from representative teams, and spoke to them a fair bit.

**“I also found Ricky great. People have their opinions about him, but for me he was very impressive in how he spoke about his plan to re-build the club.”**
Mansour is in a similar situation, with Canberra also out-bidding Penrith for the bullocking winger.

He will decide whether to join Tedesco following Friday night’s local derby against Parramatta.

Why didn't Tede$co play golf with Brooks, Mosses and Sirro instead!…he takes advice from a person who admitted he didn't put in for the club the last year...what a laughable article...

So he just proves it was all about the money, can't cop this bloke anymore, reggies for you Teddy, and take your mate Braith with you.

i mentioned in another thread that some senior players have probably expressed opinions that taking a pay cut to stay is not ideal. marshall probably feels he was hard done by coz he stayed with tigers for less and when his form dropped, we refused to cover the losses.

farah also rates sticky highly.

Nice work boys except you missed the most important part of that story.

**When Tedesco received his first offer from the Tigers a few months ago, something did not add up: his 2015 salary was less than his current contract value.**

I think what Happy has been saying all along is true. Mayer never rated him.

If you seriously want to keep a player why the hell would you offer him less than what he is already getting paid ?

Happy…Can you confirm that is true ?

I would be right on dropping Braiths ass to reggies making sure he doesnt hit 300 games and making it known in no uncertain terms that Moltzen is not wanted after that story…

Why would you let Bunji sway you? Bloke just ruined his own career/legacy, is known to protect little Timmy fiercely who now funny enough has an slight opening once again for a spot in the team at FB...

What a freaken shambles...

Admittedly that initial pay-cut offer is pretty wrong... but who knows the details, maybe they had backloaded to compensate, explaining they were going to try tie some others up until standing contracts were finnished like Lawrence who is on massive overs from Humptys days.

Yeah it's been obvious for a while that Tedesco has been pissed off about something. His media interviews have felt really passive aggressive.

Funny that he went for a round of golf with the three biggest whipping boys the Tigers have had in recent years though and they convinced him to leave. I'd love to have overheard how they spoke of the Tigers fans.

What a load of bollocks. The guy got offered a massive contract from us and the money difference isn't even that large. He earns the same amount over 4 years with us rather than 3 years with them.

You'd think with the amount of injuries he has had that he would give us that year.

Mayer and the club have done absolutely nothing wrong. Drop Braith & Tedesco to State cup now.

Where would we be if Farah, Woods, and Brooks had taken him for a round of golf? But then, maybe there's a reason they didn't. Like Mum said; be careful who you associate with, you might get tarred with the same brush.

Didnt take Teddy & Ayoub long to do the dirty on OUR club, their true colours coming to the fore.
Of course being the DT its likely more BS theyve gathered putting 2 and 2 together reading the liars posts on here
That said those will believe anything when it suits them, despite this ''media'' organizations history of fabrications
BS BS everywhere….how some people live with themselves I'll never know

Incorrect. He would have earned less with the Tigers over 4 years than the 3 year deal Canberra offered.

Look it's disappointing we could not keep him but Canberra paid overs and like it or not this is Tedesco's career. He obviously wants to maximise his salary and this is professional sport. Loyalty only goes so far these days, that's the reality of the situation.

Just a thought … when Mr T was released a few weeks back, nearly every player in the club jumped onto social media and wished him well and told of their disappointment that he wouldn't be remaining a Tiger.

With the Tedesco announcement yesterday, the only player to wish him well via social media that I can recall is Blake Austin. There has been zero from everyone else, which I find a little weird considering Mr T didn't even play a game of First Grade, yet Teddy has been with the club since he was a kid, grew up with a lot of the boys, and it seems like they have brushed him.

Might be a non-issue, but its possible that his team-mates aren't too impressed with Teddy's decision.

Timing is everything

Five weeks until our next home game

Im thinking Teddy is hoping a lot of the fuss dies down before then before he has to face a home crowd, a Cambo home crowd

Gutless

Wont be any $10 tix for that one, the extra money will have to be spent on extra security I reckon

Article says his 2015 salary would be less than this year. Just a creative way of saying it was a back loaded contract. Means nothing

This

But even still, when Manly players tslk of taking pay cuts to stay together, its "Oh how good is that?"

When its misconstrued here in this context , the club and mayer are the villians.

Still, its a good excuse - good enough for me - to dump both JT & Anasta to reggies ..kill two birds etc
