Marshall will win Dally M

Really sucks, after Sandow and Thurston wouldn't have got any points this week Benji really needed 2 or 3 points tonight. If Slater has a big game this week then I really can't see Benji winning it but I really really hope I'm wrong!

Hate to say it, but I think poor Benj blew his chance at taking out the Dally M Medal with a below par performance tonight. Ironically, against a team he usually carves up!

Not that this means anything, but I found this stat VERY surprising.

In the last 30 years, only 5 players have won a Dally M Medal and gone on to win a premiership:

Ray Price, 1982
Mick Potter, 1984
Peter Sterling, 1986
Andrew Johns, 2002
Matt Orford, 2008

I thought this number would be way higher. Very interesting.

Not surprising at all, the good sides have lots of good players that share the spoils, where the middle of the road sides tend to have a standout player. Bit like Richard Hadlee the NZ quick bowler, got a million wickets because he bowled every over from one end. Take the Storm, Smith,Cronk and Slater are competing every week against each other for the three points, very hard to dominate in that field!!!

if the dally m truely is fixed benji will pick up 1 or 2 points..
though he would seriously be lucky to grab one. his first half efforts might save him.

Make that 4 players, the Roosters won the comp in 2002, the Knights won it in 2001 when Preston Campbell won the medal.

Agree with most said here. Awards that are decided by a subjective assessment as opposed to, say, top point scorer, are always open to conjecture.

Remember a few years back the Bulldogs player (Ewen McGrady? O'Grady?) won the Rothmans? Awesome attacking player but couldn't tackle my grandma…

PS - Didn't he play with Wests after this?

yea he played for wests - i think in 1994\. i seem to remember he only played around 4 1st grade games for wests. he could play halfback or fullback. pretty quick. barba reminds me of him a bit

**Robbie Farah** is well on the way to securing a back-to-back Hooker of the Year award. The Tigers captain, who won the award in both 2007 and 2010, has been inspirational for his team this year.

His front line leadership is exemplified by the fired-up Tigers’ form heading towards to finals. The team has faced plenty of distraction and pressure this season and Farah’s work to keep them on track places him as a candidate for Captain of the Year.

i thought cam smith might have won that award this year

Good point Alien, Cam is probably favourite, with Robbie making a late charge. I like Spartan's comment though.

Supercoach I think u will find it stats re dally m winners r incorrect, u have Joey winning it in 2002 but the knights did not win the conp that year

Storm may have handed Dally M to Benji Marshall

STORM coach Craig Bellamy may have ensured Benji Marshall's Dally M Medal victory by resting Billy Slater yesterday.

Wests Tigers' Marshall, Slater and the Storm's Cooper Cronk were expected to dominate the voting in the final 10 rounds to overtake Johnathan Thurston, who led the count on 24 points when voting went behind closed doors at round 16.

A quiet final game will not cost Marshall his first Dally M Medal according to former Tigers great Benny Elias, who believes Marshall will poll more than 30 votes and storm home to clinch the greatest individual prize in the NRL at the annual Dally M Awards tomorrow night.

Marshall had a solid game, but Elias said he was outshone by captain Robbie Farah and lock Gareth Ellis in the Tigers' win over the Sharks on Saturday night.

"He'll win every award except the captain of the year, won't he," Elias said yesterday. "He's been very, very good. Everything is in his favour. He's played in all our wins. He should poll in just about all of them."

The Tigers have now won eight straight games heading into the finals and many believe Marshall has done more than enough to make up the 11-point gap to Thurston.

The Kiwi captain is being touted by many as the man to beat tomorrow night, with Elias saying he can see Marshall out-polling Thurston and rivals Cam Smith, Slater and Paul Gallen by as many as 10 votes.

Premiership teams generally have a number of good players taking points of each other. (like the storm in recent years)

It is easier to win the Dally M as a dominate player in an average team.

Not looking good for Benji! I think Slater will take it out, no complaints if he does. Another Tiger so close..but he had a great season regardless!
