Marty Taupau Update

Tough call to fit all these front rowers in.

For me Ava and Lodge must be in the team. And we know Woods, Galloway and Taupau will be. Throw in Sue who we are yet to see play on the edge so he seems to be considered front row or lock too and we have 6 front rowers that should be in the 17\. Now I guess we can fit 5 in if we play one at lock, and have 2 off the bench.

This is another reason I'd like to see Marty at least trialed as our left side back rower. It would enable us to have all our big guys on the park.

Anyway, so to accommodate all these front rowers, who plays lock? I was hoping someone like Santi would but I might need to change that thinking. Out of those front rowers I can see Lodge and Sue, and possibly Taupau playing lock. Ava, Keith and Woods are front rowers only.0

I'll settle for Taupau and Lodge off the bench, ( will be even better than Taupau and Gavet last season imo ), although I would like to see Lodge starting instead of Galloway , as he gets a few more games under his belt. Now, if only Woodsie could find some mongrel, our front rotation would be looking better than a lot of teams.

Actually, Gallaways game would have to improve enormously , or he should be out of the team completely. We don't need someone who is going to have just amble up to the defensive line and turn his back, It's time for Galloway to at least look interested, or go back to NSWCup.

I think Marty could be back row but his ball playing has my hear in my mouth…hes not quite there yet in this regard....maybe just a running back rower, with his impact - gaining metres and quick play the balls is what he does best

All this left edge right edge middle stuff is crap it be comes boring and predictable..it frustrates the hell out of me that players attack in a 10m channel on the field…let them just play footy...

One thing I know is Marty next year is one of our best assets whether he's starting or off the bench I don't mind but he needs more minutes that's for sure...

Will be one of the highlights watching him rippin and a tearin...GO TAUPAU

Isn't Sue's actual position lock?

Surely he'll be #13 if Santa isn't…

I can understand why people see him as a potential second-rower: He's quick, strong and has an offload. The real problem is having him defend out there with halves and centres. I can't see it happening short term.

Good to see Martys ok and hope he comes back bigger and stronger for next season….

He is dynamite...KAPOW..BOOM.....damage......and plenty of it coming in 2015.....

Yeh I agree with that. I guess it's a modern day necessity to allow team structure. What annoys me even more about it is when a player struggles if moved to the other side. But you see it as young as 9 and 10 years of age where a kid will play left wing or Centre all year and never spend time on the right.

TAUPAU FOR CAPTAINCY leads from the front , love this bloke . He can play Halfback for all i care  as long as he's wearing a Tiger's Jersey

No one is saying he is going to be SBW reincarnated as a second rower.

But he might be! If you don't try, you don't know.

Look - we have a mile of Front row forwards and are a bit lean in the back row for 2015.
Firstly we lose impact off the bench for half the game at best - conceded.
On the plus side we could have him on the field for 60min+

In this pre season if he loses a little weight in the right place and does some speed training I see him as not only being a SBW - I see him as possibly being better.

He can tackle, he can run harder than anyone else in the team - and I'm not sure about having your heart in your mouth when he passes - He was absolutely brilliant
for NZ in the 4 nations. You get some of these young guys running off his off loads and it'll be goodnight.

Sauce, Woods, Ava, Lodge are a pretty good Front Row
I like Taupau, Santi, Siro, Sue, Akaoula as the back row (Santi as the lock)

You still have a few FR forwards as spare in the wings as well.

I think it is worth the risk - if it comes off it could be just what the doctor ordered.

Halatau should not be in the backrow at all. We need size and power, not midgets.

Heard from someone completely random that they are thinking of putting Rowdy at lock

I'm not a fan of the move

This is how I would play them. Taupau straight into lock and replace him with Sue.

Still it looks a little prop heavy doesn't it especially when there is no way Akaoula can play big minutes. Akaoula goes great and he should slot well in the backrow but he seems to stuff up as soon as he out there for any sort of extended time.

Still too many props can't hurt.

Really Happy?

This is interesting. I'm not for it or against it. It could be a masterstroke. Remember how good Terry Hill went when moved to lock.

I wonder how Rowdy fitness is? If he could be an 80 minute lock roaming around the park and making 40 tackles it would solve many problems. But my guess would be its a tough ask to play 80 and have a high work rate for someone who has been a career back.

I'm excited to see it though

KS

I want my locks to play tight , have size and help slow down the ruck

Prefer Ava , Sue in the 13 jersey

Lawrence either shapes up in the centres or its NSW Cup

after the years of injury problems i am surprised people think we will have a problem with getting all our props on the field.

i don't really care who starts,as long as the players showing form on the day get the most minutes.
drives me crazy when coaches stick to 20 mins here and 10 mins there.
if the player is in form that day give him extra mins, and if a player is struggling, give another some extra playing time.

that is how you make each spot in the forwards competitive.

“He does bring a lot of impact,” Taylor says. “Marty starting isn’t something I’d rule out, but he’s pretty damaging off the bench. We’ve got Keith Galloway who is a good starter, along with Aaron Woods of course.”/quote]

With most on here pretty well agreeing that Taupau is now an integral member of the rotation, a key part of the article for mine, was Taylor also recognising the contribution of Keefy to our side as a starter.

Whist understanding that people look at the game differently, even more so when at the ground, I really cannot fathom that some cannot see the value and stiffness that Sauce brings to our middle, particularly without the ball.

As I have stated in another thread, I see Martin as a prop, but am open to having a trial as an edge player. As far as the thirteen jumper goes, for me, Sue is our primary option with his niggle and aggression, along with better lateral movement needed in the guts.

I also see a Santi type being crucial, evolving his game a little to bring much needed work rate to the position, else rotating with Aka and Sirro to allow them to play with more impact on the edges.

A transfusion of aggression for Woodsy would also be nice.

Fitness I don't think would be an issue for rowdy. Pretty sure he runs his own fitness business. I know this doesn't automatically translate to his own fitness but I think the forwards may be the last roll of the dice for him because he is now to slow to be a centre.
