Planing the team around Mitchel Moses was a good one too

Yet some people get up in arms whenever there are stories about our bad management over the years, Ballin is the just one of the more obvious ones.
But never mind, at least he helps little old ladies to cross the road. Lovely Bloke.
We need more like him
That decision of Taylor's should have been enough to sack Taylor on its own.

I disagree with the issue of worst signing. That trophy lies with Anasta. We gave him the world and he did not deliver and continues to bag the club and supporters out on a weekly basis. I could think of another use for Ivans Bus if Braith was to hop out in front of it.

At least Anastasia played a few games, was total crap I admit.
But at least the supporters actually knew what he looked like.
More than we can say about Casper.

The way you're carry on about it you would think that Taylor and Balllin sat in a room and planned it all out and are now laughing at the club.

Yep he only played 60 odd minutes of football but he was a risky signing on the cheap (my understanding is Manly are paying most of his contract). We signed a guy coming off a knee op for two years and he got unlucky with injuries. Would it have made a difference if he got on the field more? Probably not as people see him as a piece in the Farah puzzle and want to hate on him for that.

There is a very good old saying " never laugh at another mans misfortune"..Matt has had horrendous injury problems these last few seasons, however he at least tried to get on the field and has had a great influence on our club off the field….I would rather one Matt Ballin than a heap of Mitch Moses, the culture would be poisonous for years if that were the case..

Matt Ballin set for life after footy as injury bites
MAY 25, 2017 5:51PM

SERIOUS knee injuries have limited Wests Tigers hooker Matt Ballin to just 63 minutes of game time in the last two years. But even as his body fails, the NRL veteran is well set up for life after football.
The former Queensland Origin rake is a qualified school teacher and also runs a personal training business.
Gaining qualifications outside of footy is now an essential part of playing for any club, even at Holden Cup level, under the “no work, no play” policy. Players who aren’t involved in education or work outside of footy are ineligible for team selection. However, this is a new concept and certainly wasn’t a policy back when Ballin started his NRL career in 2007, with for former Manly premiership winner taking it upon himself to earn qualifications.

“I’ve gone and educated myself, I’m a high school teacher,” Ballin said. “It took me 12 years to do a four-year degree so I can’t see why other people can’t do it.” Ballin played 2017 games for the Manly Sea Eagles, but has only managed only three games since signing with the Tigers due a succession of injuries, including two ACL tears. “Having that piece of paper allows you to seize a range of career paths,” Ballin said. “Gaining my certificate ensured I had the necessary skills to undertake further study and to start my own business in the fitness industry.”

No wonder he is so busted, playing over 2000 games for manly before he got here.

Lol lol. 2017 games manly got out of him and we got 63 minutes. Can we get a refund.

lol.. Not fit for purpose

Based on his time spent on field it is easily the worst signing this club has made.

In terms of overall output though, Anasta was hands down the worst and hasn't stopped laying in the boot since because he had to pay for a gatorade once. Absolute myth as a player and a germ to boot.

The highest paid player per minute we have ever had.Manly certainly sold JT a pup there

From my understanding we didn't pay him a cent as he signed a 2 year deal at manly then 2 months later told him they didn't want him

And you think it was anything else?? :roll

Sounds like it's all but over for Ballin on the field.
I wonder if Cleary would turn him into a trainer at the club. Sounds like he has the relevant qualifations and inside fresh knowledge of exactly what the players go through on a daily basis…as well as being a respected person. I think a lot of players would really put into what Ballin would offer as a trainer.

I think your being harsh by adding Daniela to the list. I thought he was good, the kid could play, i recall him scoring a hat trick in a game.

The problem with what you're saying is that Ballin hasn't been "unlucky" with injuries. He was busted when we signed him and was always a long shot to contribute significantly on the field.

In other words, the reason why Ballin might be the worst signing of the lot is that this outcome could have been predicted when the signing was made. I've said this in a number of posts over the past couple of years so I'm not being wise after the event, but signing a 32-year-old who has just had ACL surgery - and has yet to prove their fitness subsequent to it - to a two-year deal is an unbelievably stupid move. You can't even clear the cap space if the guy has to retire because he was already carrying the injury when you made the signing.

I have no idea how much freight Manly paid to have Ballin taken off their hands, but unless it was basically 100% of the contract (in which case the Tigers have still wasted a roster spot) it was still a really dumb idea to sign him.

Lovely bloke though, apparently.

And where is Corey Paterson?

Didn't we buy Scott Prince after he had a horror run with injuries and no other club wanted him.

He was one of the keys to the 2005 premiership including being the captain.

Ballin is a class act and players we need around the joint, but we needed more game time.

I also thought it is hard putting Geoff Daneila on the list. He was unlucky with injuries and too small to play NRL but gave it 100% each time he played.

Exactly. Having previously had injuries is not necessarily a black mark against further injury, esp if they check out fit in a pre-contract medical.

Prince had some super serious injuries before joining us, esp that broken leg from a Steve Price charge down.

Benji did his shoulder how many times before going on to win the Golden Boot award?

James Tedesco has had plenty of injuries himself, he's missed 53/133 = 39.84% of potential games (including 1 Origin so far) and yet strangely clubs continue to line up to sign him.

Idris has done his ACL again, same knee, was this "bound to happen"?

You can't say "he had injuries before, bad decision". It just doesn't work like that.

Because Ballin was the only one signed by Taylor and that dead horse still hasn't finished copping a beating.

You still going on about JT. We are talking about a current member of our squad who has been paid for 2 years and played 63 minutes. Terrible signing a player who had just done his knee.

No one is questioning what kind of bloke he is. But the facts are he will go down as one of out worst signings of all time, doesnt matter who signed him. Or you still trying to justify 63 minutes in 2 years.

Agree he was a terrible signing by Taylor. Don't really care if he's mother Theresa off the field the fact is he's offered us nothing on it. He should do everyone a favour and retire and give his spot to someone more able bodied. What a lemon. Another great job by Taylor.

Give it a rest guys. None of you whingeing will change the fact he has a contract for this year. Do any of you seriously think he will be re-signed? No? Didn't think so.

Wouldn't mind seeing Matt bought into the Coaching Staff in some capacity in 2018…Shame that injury cruelled his stint with us...

As a bloke the whole squad and staff appreciated his influence...

Actually you can. The greatest predictor of future injuries is past injuries. Second is age. So two black marks against Ballin. The third, and most telling of all, is that the Tigers weren't signing a player with a history of knee injuries: they were signing a player with a history of knee injuries _and a current, unrehabbed knee injury_. Balling could not have passed a medical as he was recovering from ACL surgery when signed, in fact he was never expected to debut until some point during the 2016 season (which became round 10 or similar).

Idris was a lottery ticket, but at least he was uninjured at the time of signing. Ballin was pencilled in to be the starting hooker despite there having to be significant doubt over whether he would ever be able to play regularly. That's why the signing was objectively terrible.

Also doesn't change the fact that the guy who brought him in lost his job, nor the fact that Tigers have plenty of dud signings over 18 seasons, so why not just take it as one that didn't work out, wish him well, move on, right?
