Matt Groat?

Groat is not a 'flashy' player by any means. Plenty of people will misconstrue that as being 'average'.

Average players don't win Aussie Schoolboy MVP.

He will bounce back over the next year or two.

He's only a baby. Sheens brought him on too early because he let two props walk out the door. Groat was never ready for it, but if you're a 18-19 year old rookie given an opportunity to start in FG, you're hardly going to knock it back, aren't you?

Give him another season or two to show a bit more development before writing the lad off. The high shot from Te'o would have shaken his confidence a little as well I'd imagine.

I agree, he was brought in to early, & the hit from Teo knocked him about. I think the kid will make it especially with some time off the bench this year & not starting the games this year, he must of shown something as a couple of teams were after him.

Groat has to be one of the most least talented players i've seen in a while. Lucky to still be a first grader in 3 or 4 yrs imo

The kid played front row at 18\. Much tougher than some the keyboard warriors on here

He did and he cost us big time in the final against the Warriors. Is it allowed to not rate a player? or is it because he's a Wests player we all must see him as a rising star? Not every young player who comes into fg lasts the journey. IMO Groat will be ones of those players. If having having that opinion is so shocking that it makes me a keyboard warrior to you then so be it

I thought he was a west tigers player…. Who cares where he came from

Felt for groat last season Sheens butchered the kid …he has the potential but wasn,t ready ,Sheenses inhibility and stupidity to go into a season 2 props short was the down fall of the young fella .Hopefully has overcome the injuries and now with a new coach we could see the real Matty Groat stand up.

He didnt butcher him he gave him an opportunity before he was ready, he is not ruined, some who dont follow lower grades probably have an unfair opinion of him.
He will be right in the mix for nrl this season and in the future

I hope you believers prove me wrong. I'm a Moltzen believer and after last season was losing faith but I'll stick with him. All you Groat supporters should too. All I want is for our team to have a great season.

X 2 I hope we have a good season , and I'm on the fence with Groat but if we sign him and it doesn't work out Cusschops we don't lose a great deal of money

And I'd be happy to see Moltz play like he did for the last 6-8 weeks in 2011The difference between Groat and Moltz is probably somewhere between 100-150 k thats my problem

I think the worst thing for Matt were the neverending & unfair comparisons to Woods

Yep. Woods is a freak, a once in a generation type player to come on the way he has at his tender age. Groat is what 20 this year? Hardly behind the bell curve in development as a prop.

He played in every junior team possible. He dominated everybody and was the best Aussie junior of his age for years. He then came to NYC and actually DIDN'T dominate at all there but got the jump on Begovich on pedigree alone and played alright for a while, as a reserve prop who played about 17 minutes a game. Then he was forced to become a starting front rower at a club notorious for being piss weak in the pigs and got trampled. If the place wasn't run by somebody who so overtly played favourites Groat would still have not made a first grade debut imo, Begovich would have (and probably would be a regular first grader by now but I digress)

He dominated because he was twice the size of everyone else at junior level and played in short 10-15 minute stints. Begovich didn't dominate at junior level but could play for the entire game and I agree would have been close to a regular first grader by now.
Wests Tigers recruitment go scouting players at 14 15 years old in the country areas like Groat and Kitt put them on a scholarship and pay for their education.
Potter will just pick players on form he won't have to keep some recruitment officer happy by playing his players.

Laughable comments. For starters there is loads of big kids. The kid was a dominate player at all levels because he was/is a very good footballer.
I know is common practice to blame Sheens for every thing from AIds in Africa to the GFC, but to suggest he picked first grade sides to keep recruitment officers happy is hilarious.

All recruitment officers at all clubs look everywhere for talented kids at about the age of 15 to bring them into their system. Our recruitment officers have done a wonderful job of this evidenced by the strength of our NYC side and the talent coming through.

How many recruited NYC teenagers have gone on to be regular first graders as a result of this wonderful recruiting…....Ayshford, Moltzen .....anyone else ?

What kids have our wonderful recruitment found outside our of our local juniors at 15-16 who are now regular 1st graders ? ....and don't say Benji. A lot of scholarships for not much result from what I can see.

Good luck to Groaty I hope he proves to be the exception and has a long career in 1st grade.

He is a scholarship kid.
Bmm, heigno, lafrenchi, fifita, luke o'donnell, that is barely thinking about it

They are not all going to make it to nrl, but you need to funnel them into your system to get as many quality players you can. Are you suggesting we dont bring kids down from other places??

They are never all going to make it, but you need to funnel them int

GNR you do seem to be the one constantly in the middle of this whole wests/balmain thing.Give it a rest. You forever accuse peole of saying there wests but really they are Balmain in disguise or vice versa and you forever mumble about some pies forum but you are the one thats ex wests.HMMM. :crazy Why not focus on WESTS TIGERS issues instead of forever feeding the WESTS/BALMAIN fire.Enough already. You may not necessarily be at fault in this situation with this other poster(you did say WESTS as in WESTS TIGERS) I know but you forever feed this flame that still sadly becomes a fire.Your posts are usually good dont let yourself down with replying foolishly to needless posts.

Mate, there was only one person having a dig at the Wests v Balmain crap and it wasn't me

I wonder if Parra fans have arguments amongst themselves about which guys are Parra players and which ones are Eels players. Anyway one little snide remark shouldn't overshadow this thread

Here's hoping Groat proves me wrong this yr as im one of his biggest critics. More then happy for him to prove me wrong

True, shouldn't let ignorant, snide remarks hijack these threads. These arguments go nowhere and achieve nothing

In fact I think the ironicness of the other poster was that I think he thought of you as you did of him they are promoting one side of the merger when in fact both of you are meaning to defend the good cause "THE WESTS TIGERS". :sign:

I saw groaty at wests c'town grabbing a feed recently and he looks a different body shape to when he made his debut.

He looks leaner through the mid section and stronger up top so i'm looking forward to seeing how he goes in 2013.
