Matthew Woods

I heard the wraps on Woods coming out of Balmain juniors. When finally watching his NYC games, I was not overly impressed.

There's something to be said about being 16-17 and a very effective footballer, but if you remain at 90 kg when the other boys round out at 105 kg from 18-20, you are going to struggle.

He looks to me to have handy skills but lacking the power. Like a weaker version of Liam Fulton, who himself took a long time to not get smashed in every hitup.

yep agree.

I really liked him as a young bloke coming through, thought he looked a likely first grader, hasnt kicked on how I had hoped.
On this years performamce Id have him below Funaki, Lamar, B Siro and Cassel.

At the start of the year I probably had him First of that lot.

He was coming off a serious injury and missed alot of footy, a full off season might see him get to where he was, hope so, for whatever reason I quite like him and would like to see him do well, where ever he plays

He was under contract, another one Taylor didn't want.

People are worried about Woods , very average goal kicker , average work rate , probably a touch small

We have lost far , far better juniors under other coaches Milky

Don't let your Taylor hatred cloud the facts mate

And Geo typed the name of the bloke you mentioned , no luck , what's his stats ??

So its his birthday in a week

We will have to post it , give him a big welcome , show him the love :sign:

Really disappointed we've let Woods go - have watched him through the junior ranks, and while bigger and stronger kids have always got more raps, he's never let the club down. Works harder than anyone and is a great leader, a Mark O'Neill type of player (with a bit more footy skill) who will give you 80 minutes of honest work and is a player you can set your whole club culture around.

Don't know the story of him leaving (may well have been offered plenty by Parra), but I've be even more disappointed if was only a moderately better offer. We need to keep local kids like this around, particularly when they've played in successful local junior sides for some time.

Couldn't agree more Benjirific. It is curious that every time we let a player go, the usual suspects jump on the forum to say how we didn't need him anyway. Clearly these posters don't seem to rate anyone. Your reasoning for hanging on to young Woods makes a lot of sense.

We must be watching a different player. Matt has a very high work rate indeed it is one of his strengths. He also has that nous on the field that many lack. I recall the NYC game against Penrith and Matt's defence on the right hand side of the field together with Bayley on the left and Ray Stone from the interchange made all the difference.

Same thing happened with Brendan Santi….
If he's good enough, we'll get him back.

On a side note, Tyler Cassal looks like a gun!
Ray Stone also...
Rate 'em both more than Woods.
Woods is ok tho

Similar to Santi. Parra offered him $120k and an NRL contract (extended squad). He wasn't as high up on our pecking order and while yes a good personality to have around the club i don't think the club wanted to stand in the way of his future.

Could very well come back to the club like Santi did too. Not as big or powerful as Santi, but probably a smarter player too.
