Whats so hard to understand. Named captain in the hope of him taking on the role and going to the next level as a players. Failed at the job and is now in danger of losing it.

Isnt the first and wont be the last to come up short when a coach wanted more.

A coach with testicular fortitude to make a call like this is refreshing.

Hahaha not that I'm against Madge setting and policing high expectations, but he has the freedom to do it now with someone else's roster.

Is Madge going to be as strict and cut-throat (ballsy you say) with his own roster? You can't go chopping and dropping people you hand-picked, without criticism.

He did with Jennings.

Madge is sweeping the joint of mediocrity. High risk play that’s now Mbye, Reynolds, Packer, Matulino, McQueen, ET rumoured on credible media outlets under pressure. Sounds like everyone brought in over the past few years excluding Matterson and Thompson .

Finally we have a coach with balls!,!

Hell of a set if he’s punting everyone. Only issue is no one is going to take these players unless they go to ESL. I think it’s wishful thinking we won’t be paying players to play elsewhere.

I don’t think I have ever seen a coach sign an entire new roster one year, then ship out after one season, and his successor tries to undo everything he put in place. Speaks volumes for Cleary’s judgement. Throw in the 5 captain rubbish and it makes you wonder why everyone was so sucked in by him.

@The_Doc No doubt they are all leaders but do you look towards the future when picking the captain? Since there are so many new players its not obvious who should be captain. Do we pick co-captains with an old head and a new head to so you have the experience and look to the future?

I love accountability.

However moving people on when our club made a commitment to them mid season is at best disruptive.

At worst it extends a recent culture where our club says to players that we are not a trustworthy place to make a home. It says to players that contracts are not important.

As I said, I love accountability but I also believe leaders reap what they sow. When integrity is compromised for performance there is always a price.

As fans we will pay the price of not respecting contracts, of not being loyal... when a player turns around of puts themself before our club we will know the bill has arrived.

@upthetigers
Yeah if you don't have the runs on the board like Mbye didn't co captaincy with an older head might not have been a bad idea. Madge may not like that style though, 5 captains is a bit pathetic on the other hand.

This is getting interesting.

@Mccarry Players recently have already put themselves before the club that looked after them very well !. I am getting the feeling that there has been a decision within the club that the bar HAS to be raised significantly, football manager moved on , major contracted player movement as well a big turnover with off contract players at seasons end .
As a supporter that is invested emotionally and financially in the club this motivation has been 10 years in the making IMO .
The mediocrity cycle has had to be broken with what ever means possible , what seems to be happening at present call it what you like clean out / rebuild what ever this seems to me at last someone has pushed the go button and demanding success and about time , I for one have had enough of running 9th!

@jirskyr Absolutely you can. A coach has to coach and players need to perform. Once everyone gets it, we start winning on a regular basis.

@Snake you are right. Teddy, Moses and Woods all put themselves first.

Was that before or after we told Tim Sheens that we were only joking about his contract being reliable.

Was it before or after we told Farah and Benji we were only joking about their next contracts being when they would make more money with the club. Was it before or after we tore up Farah’s contract.

My point is not whether Sheens was a good coach. It’s not about Farah nor is it about Benji, it’s about the way we respect or don’t respect our commitments will be a major part of whether our players respect their commitments to us.

The way I see it if you're on top dollar you need to perform, and we're not paying Mbye chump change. He's inconsistent, which we can't afford in a fullback and captain - he needs to be consistently good each week. This might be the catalyst that kicks him into gear, or it might be the straw that breaks his back - if he crumbles it doesn't say much for his mental toughness and resilience. We'll see tonight...

Looks like those of us calling Mbye out for poor performance weren't so far off the mark after all. It would seem the coach wasn't happy either.

100% mate.

Once again those calling it for what it is were howled down on the forum. Turns out we werent far off the mark.

i am resigned to the fact that half our fans are happy to finish 9th.

"half our fans are happy to finish 9th" <-- that's not nice and it is not true 🙂

no one is happy to finish 9th - I am one of them who refrain from calling out players for poor performance or howling down peeps who calls it how it is... I always hope it is only a one off thing and that they will perform better next time, and if they still don't perform, I am always looking for positives even if it's so hard at times (Fonua for example - he should be a forward not a back and would be better than Matulino I reckon) anyway, again not one Tigers fan is happy to finish 9th - I'm sure we all want to finish at the top - PREMIERS!!!

Anyway, if he is let go - I don't care much as long as the coach knows what he wants and gets what he wants to build a bright future at WT

How he plays tonight and over the next weeks won’t be indicator imo. If he’s average, it’s because he’s average. He always has been a slightly above average first grader at best. I can’t see him suddenly setting the game alight. He’s never cemmented a position. He’s only playing fullback because the Dogs threw their hands in the air in exasperation when he couldn’t cut it in the halves and they had to find somewhere for him due to his inflated contract. Then Cleary comes along and the Dogs think Xmas has come early and can’t release him quick enough. Then Cleary leaves, and Madge sees Mbye as another piece of dead wood collected by his overrated predecessor. No player Ivan brought to this club is safe atm. That is pretty telling.

Alright so then why did that fool Madge bring Jennings across to Tigers only to drop him by Round 13? First signing Madge is responsible for and he botched it, it does not bode well for any new signings he makes... I'm sick of Tigers signing the also-rans and plodders!

So easy to slip into criticism mode. Like I said, it's easy to be ruthless when it's someone else's roster that you've taken on, let's see if he keeps it up with his own hand-picked players. And if he is ruthless and drops his own signings without remorse, if he has to do that, then it brings into question his talent identification skill.

And @rustycage - too simplistic mate. You don't start winning regularly just because the players don't feel safe in their positions. There's clearly a balance between accountability and stability. If you need evidence just look at the top performing sides every year and how FEW players they use - they aren't chopping and changing players because of temporary form dips. No, the good coaches get the best out of their players without the guillotine hanging over their heads.
