Mbye stepping down as captain

I like Mbye I think he’s a very decent player, seems like a stand up bloke. I said this a while ago on another thread but he cops some stick because he’s horrendously overpaid, which is not his fault but that also comes with expectations. He clearly can’t live up to his price tag taking the captaincy off him or him stepping down can only work in his favour less pressure just get out there and play football.

I think you’re right about that doc. Imo, this is the year Madge and the coaching staff put more focus on raising the expectations of players and those in the club. If a player is on big money then surely he is partly responsible for asking for it , though? Isn’t he? Have you never been sold a lemon? If I’m asking $1m for my services I’m conveying an expectation of value surely? But to be fair to Mbye, players and managers must have seen WT as perennial cellar dwellers?

By all accounts is a good person. Unfortunately for him, his pay packet is a heavy burden when you consider what he has provided in return.

IMO his position is fullback or a utility. From memory his best game for us was when shifted to fullback mid game due to an injury. Until then we looked flat and fruitless, when he shifted he provided a spark in attack.

Either way good call cause i don't think he is in our long term plans.

Tamou will be a good captain, but will likely only be on the field 45mins a game.

Gives an opportunity to blood someone else while he is taking a breather.

Brooks?

Not a bad idea. It worked for Scott Prince.

Maybe joint captains? Or Brooks as VC.

Brooks is the common denominator. He’s the player, in the position, you want the team to revolve around. He’s the guy who should be controlling possession and field position. He has the skill. He has the competitive streak. It’s time for to be handed more authority imo.

Brooks hasn’t been able to demand the ball, can’t see him demanding performance from his peers
Mbye has been a rubbish Captain, couldn’t hold a conversation with himself in front of the mirror!
Tamou demands respect with his presence and we need to be led from the front.

Am I the only one that hopes Tamou isn’t given the captaincy??
We’d be better off blooding Brooks or even Douehi imo

Pretty well!

Brooks will be struggling to hold his position let alone have a capacity role .. he has enough of a problem directing himself around the field !
Mbye won the lottery and sleeps soundly every night , the captaincy was a burden , leadership certainly is not his go . I blame the club for putting him in this situation from the start , IMO there were types that thought the captaincy would some how justify the ridiculous amount of money they paid for his services!

Stay with me on my radical idea........ give the captaincy to Brooks (there I said it)

I think Brook’s mindset will change, whereby, he will finally understand it’s his job to grab the team by the collar and be in control.

If he fails than at the end of season move him on, one way or another.

Sounds like you want to set him up to fail so you can get rid of him.

I think it is a bad idea.

Captains role imo is to talk to the ref. Some have it some don’t. Thurston was terrible in early days as captain. Mbye would of got better but regardless he is still a leader and can continue to be a leader he just won’t need to talk to ref. Something I believe Madge big on across the park.
If you’ve been leading hand you would also realise having better people in their job under you reflects on how you are perceived at your job.

The question is....Did he ever talk to the Ref?

(not counting when they were walking off at full time).

Russell, you obviously haven’t thought it through. Lol
Don’t you think Brooks’ game would improve if he was given more responsibility?
As Harvey posted, Jimmy is expected to be on field for only 45mins. So who is his replacement?
Doueihi?

I thought it out real good 20/40.

It wasn't the point of making Brooks captain.

It was the point of make him captain and if he fails - move him on.

i.e. Play reasonably well at half - but does not do any good at captain - give him the flick.

Not everyone is a captain - look at Mbye, not a captains bootlace.

I thought the Fox Sports article this morning was good PR for the club. Mbye put his support behind Tamou taking the reins, and said that he felt obliged to focus on other players more than himself when he was captain. Sounds like he's not kicking stones about it (at least not publicly), which means it becomes a non-event for the Slothfield types. Good result all round it seems.

Not a totally rad notion dude. But it'd have to be done the right way.
I'd let Brooksy get a few games under his belt this year to settle in as the dominant shot-caller first, get comfy running the team his way. All the while he'd be observing and learning from Big Jim, then with Madge's blessings, he could go V/C and get a feel for it from there.
As someone else pointed out, Big Jim will spend a bit of time off the park so, regardless, we will need someone else to fill that void.
Maybe Mbye continues as V/C or Douehei steps up to the mark, seeing as he looks destined to start the season in the halves.
Other than that though, there's not alot of other obvious candidates imo.
As for moving him on, I'm backing Brooksy to get back to his better form, and hopefully supercede our expectations.

I thought ...gee he must have been thinking of other players in the game against Souffs.

You remember.. the one where he kept running in - in defense and leaving Hoffman isolated to deal with at least two players.

The one where they scored 4 tries.

Glad he was thinking of Hoffman, or it might have been ten tries.

Some are born to be captains, most others are not. MBye will now be most happy and able to concentrate on his own play.

I think he was more talking about at training/off field stuff. But yeah that was a pretty average performance, the whole left side defence let Hoffman down that night.

Jimmy will be a great captain , however he is not an 80 min player , so someone will still have to assume the captaincy when he is not on
