Mechanical Issues

My 03 NP Diesel Pajero Exceed is sick. Rough idle and occasional stalling has developed quite quickly and getting worse. I'm thinking injector pump but don't want to admit it. Are there any mechanics out there that might have an alternate diagnosis or a possible ray of hope?

Fuel filter? Bad batch or small amount of water in fuel?

Fuel filter would be a good result - my concern is the speed of which the issues arose. I've heard a bit about injector pumps so dreading that playing out. Dodgy fuel - possible I guess

DPF filter ?

Thanks hobbo, no warning light, but another possibility. Not sure of the last clean. Actually, not even sure if it has one.

Check the MAF sensor, they are all signs of a faulty connection or a faulty MAF

Is it hunting for revs when it’s going ?
(On idle) ?
As @851 said .. check AFM and if filthy clean with break cleaner

Not sure on that one mate. Easy to start, acceleration was ok up til today. Damn I wish I was more mechanically savvy. Gonna look into it though :+1:

I had a similar issue not that long ago.
I changed the fuel pump , the spark plugs , the MAF , the coils , the cam shaft sensor , the crank shaft sensor and was still experiencing the same thing. It would start and then rough idle and turn off.
Problem with mine was that it wouldn't stay on long enough to take it to a mechanic so I was doing things by people's suggestions as to what the problem might be.
Until I looked it up on google and found out it could be the fuel pump relay.
So I got myself one from the wreckers fitted it and the car runs like new.

I think the problem is it is a Pajero.

Thanks mate. This is what Im hoping for. I've been through a similar situation with a Kia Grand Carnival I had. Spent in excess of $8000 on trying to work out the problem over a two year period only to find the issue was a $150 switch. Fingers crossed.

We had a 2010 diesel Pajero, 5 speed manual for 10 years, bought it new and sold it this year, it was a great car

You needed to mention this before I sold it, there was nothing wrong ours mate.
We only sold it because our kids have grown up and it was too big for the wife to drive around by herself, we got a Mazda CX-3 for her

A faulty MAF will let you start, will struggle to rev or idle

Rusty, I had a similar issue with a cruiser 200 and again with a Chevy. Both times it was dirty fuel or water in fuel and both times I put in an extra filter which sorted it out. If it is a dirty fuel issue and you continue to drive it will do more damage.

Thanks for the heads up. :+1: Got a mechanic coming around Thursday morning to check things out. Not easy to get one at this time of year.
