LEGENDARY Maroons coach Mal Meninga has been unveiled as the new Kangaroos coach.
As exclusively revealed by RLW back in May, Meninga will leave his Maroons post, a job he held since 2005 and will take the reins of the national team.
Meninga’s deal will see him hold the position until the end 2019 and will officially commence his term immediately.
“For the players, it is the ultimate privilege to the wear the colours of your country, and it is something that they all aspire to,” Meninga said.
“For me, it’s always been something I’ve wanted to do. It is truly an honour to be in this position, as the new coach of the Kangaroos.”
In addition to coaching the Kangaroos, Meninga will be based in Sydney where he will also undergo an ambassadorial role for the game.
“Mal’s work with us starts today – so it is a very important day for the Kangaroos,” NRL head of football Todd Greenberg said.
“Our aim is to win the Rugby League World Cup in 2017 and the job officially begins now.”
“Mal’s reputation as a player and as a coach, and also as a figure in our game, is second-to-none,” Mr Greenberg said.
“This is an incredibly exciting appointment for the Kangaroos.”
There is no word as to when the Queensland Rugby League will announce a successor to Meninga.
Kevin Walters, one of Meninga’s assistant coaches at the Maroons, would be regarded as favourite to take over the top job there, although several other candidates – including another of Meninga’s assistants, Michael Hagan – could also be considered.
Wayne Bennett appears more likely to concentrate on Brisbane Broncos, but he still looms as a wild-card possibility in a situation like this.
